it just gets annoying when they never cast it and you always have to tell them...

This goes with everything. Ninja's get mad when they aren't hasted as they should be, but I have never seen anyone actually write a post on that.

I do have to say I totally agree that a RDM who wont refresh is useless, I was just trying to get the point across that it is not their #1 priority, honesty, I would say in most cases Dispel takes that spot.

Hey...hey come here....yeah.....little closer....I'll let you in on a little secret.

(most people suck at their job no matter what it is below 60)

I wish I making it up. The sheer number of people with gimp gear and horrible play habits never really goes away until about 60. Once you've taken a job to endgame, you'll see it too. I had a party in the mid-fifties, the melee planning on making Gravitation:

Melee: Okay, so burst Dispel.

Me (RDM): Um...why?

Melee: It's a Dark SC, you can burst dark spells.

Me: Right...but why Dispel?

Melee: I don't know ;) the guide says to.

Me: .....

Which brings me to RDM. It's incredibly easy to be bad at, so, most people suck at it. You have to be an absolute master of macros, know your spells, know the mob, have good gear (elemental staves, pretty much all of them, is not enough) yada yada yada. Then there's the actual execution of it all. Wonder why RDM sub NIN for that cool looking dual wield and neglect their duties? Because its a piece of cake. Its what melee do. These people aren't real RDMs, they're THF without SATA that miss a lot and can cast a few spells (if they feel like it).

Now for some random responses.

I just wish that everyone was required to PLAY a job before passing judgement on it.

But then there wouldn't be threads like these so people can explain how much they know about a job never played!

I don't think there's a really set order to refresh,

Anything beyond the PLD is up to the RDM, but the general concensus is PLD RDM WHM BLM DRK. Swap out WHM for SMN, but you get the idea.

Blackchaoshero....I don't even know where to begin. You're a BLM that apparently likes to give out a lot of advice on a job you don't have at 75 or I'm speculating even as high as your BLM. I find it amusing you think Elvaan MP is DEVASTATED by refreshing. Obviously you have a lot of experience being an Elvaan RDM too.

Everybody knows how to be a RDM better than the RDMs do....especially the L46 WARs!!!

ahahhaahahaha *wipes tear from eye* /sigh

Indeed my rdm is an unconciably low level. i said devastated because that is pretty much the exact term elvaan in the 41-48 level kept giving me... i always wondered about it since one refresh on themselves heals all ills caused by keeping the whm and pld in refresh... but hey, i never whined when people told me to burst freeze because it seems like a lot of mp... or even more like the selfless suicide of slaves1 for the good of the party. even poor little taru's get devistated at throwing half their mp into one spell... go, the guy who thought up the freeze burst should be shot. won't break chain 4 like that.

1i may or may not have absorbed this line from a book i'm reading by Terry Goodkind.

Unless Burst-Dispel cancels two statuses (like Gorger's attack can), it'd probably be useless....but it it could, holy crap. =P

i have never been yelled at for doing shitty as a rdm in a party, but i am only lvl 18. i usually get close enough to melee because i rarely ever get hate, and then i enfeeble and nuke, and i'll even do some extra melee damage.

And you sounded just like my sister when you were sulking that day where your BF was gone and you had tried to make pancakes.

I got a good laugh out of this.

The main problem i've always had with this is that its MUCH harder to tell when the refresh cycle should start over than if you put yourself first. Meaning the refresh cycle starts again when you see your refresh wear off.....

Meaning rdm first, but thats just my opinion, i'm sure there prob is people out there that can see every round when the pld refresh wears off in the log after 2-3 hours of xping, but not me.....

my refresh order...

-myself (I need to keep MY mana up to refresh other's^^)
-paladin (he's got lower MP that'll use it just as much as others.. if he actually does do his job ><)
-primary healer (WHM usually.. sometimes SMN)
-primary nuker (basically I pick 1 BLM if there's more than 1)
-secondary healer (usually the SMN.. could be another BLM I guess with more focusing on WHM)
-other (usually never need to refresh bard.. but other are like.. the DRK and such)

anyways.. witihin battle my primary concern is refreshing everyone that needs it.. so even if I want to enfeeble at the beginning.. if the cycle has just ended.. I go through the refresh cycle again and then enfeeble. Lately the NIN and PLD seem to take care of Blinding the mobs so I Dia II, Slow, Gravity, Silence (if needed.. sometimes this'll be first), and then paralyze. Dispel might come first if the mob has say, ice spikes which paralyze. Then I concern myself on helping the WHM keep the party healed and all negative effects off people. And during a skillchain I will always help Nuking unless a very important debuff (like Silence on a mage type monster that casts Flare...) comes off or the refresh cycle needs to go through again... or if someone is in dire need of healing. I make it to about 90% of the MBs and do a nice 500-600 damage ^^ which is very good. And Elvaans are not bad.. I am amazed that there are so many Elvaan RDMs.. I wonder what made them all go it.. when I started the game I was the ONLY Elvaan RDM.. and the only female one at that >< atleast to my knowledge.... but ya.. that's how I work things in a party usually. Generally I hold tells and turn off LS pearl and other things that migth distract me from the party. This tends to be where I am working 100%.. problem is.. sometimes I get a party when I really am not in the mood (it's when a friend begs me cause no other RDMs around) or when I just wake up and still groggy or when it's getting late I start losing focus., Anyways.. that's how it is. Don't get too angry at those just starting off with refreshing.. they'll get their own system down and work it out until they are very comfortable with it and do their best. Just takes time.. more partying.. more practice.. practice makes perfect

there's an easy solution, form a static, no doubt the rdm will be elvaan AND probably terrible to start and then you MOULD them into a refreshing machine

What does being an elvaan do with being a bad RDM? I don't understand what you mean.

And you can refresh all you like, but if you don't dispel beetles I ca nassure you that your MP will run out anyway. Refresh isn't the "end-all" spell

Exactly.. Refresh is indeed a great spelll to help with.. (we desperately need a refreshga ><) and well... it won't mean crap if we don't debuff the mob... sometimes I'll hold refreshing cycle a tick to dispel and silence and whatnot the mob and then get back on the cycle... I forgot to add that I help buff the plays.. such as Haste and that stuff ^^

paralyze and slow alone helps the healer just as much as refresh. Slower attacks and a chance to be paralyzed at higher lvl can save several Cure IV's (which cost 88 MP each). So even 3 Cure IV's have saved more MP then refresh alone.

And without dispel the mob will live longer, which means more MP wasted by everyone.

And shorter fights equal more exp.

shorter fights equall more MP

more MP equall less downtime.

A RDMes job is not just to refresh as most people seem to think. A good RDM will do the job of a BRD, WHM, BLM, RDM and BRD combined combined. We are like WAR's in a mage's clothing(don't get me wrong... hear me out!). a WAR can take the form of a DD or a tank, and they can perform both tasks pretty well. and a RDM can take the shape of main healer, main nuker and main enfeebler. We can do the first 2 mentioned pretty well, but NOT as good as the respective jobs. Main enfeebling we do best (without a NIN anyway). Even bards can perform the refreshing task better then us sicne tyheirs don't take any MP. Our main task is to keep downtime to a minimum, and SE gave us many tools to succeed.

Sadly, we are misunderstood by many, even by most Japanese. This is the reason there are so many bad RDMes out there, since they have in their head that their *ONLY* task in a party is to refresh. They can just keep the refresh cycle up, and then /heal for the rest of the time, and still get lots of invites to parties. I really don't mind a meleeing RDM *IF* they keep refreshing, enfeebling, magicbursting, backup-healing up. Personally, I don't melee. Not because I can't, but because I use whatever chance I get to rest up.

while lvling WHM, and SMN, I've only met 1 or 2 good RDMes that don't only refresh. I asked them to enfeeble. Sadly, they just told me to shutup since I don't know what a RDM is supposed to do -.- and then they sit there, refreshing 3-4 people, and then rest up -.- Won't even bother with dispel untill everyone in the party have reminded them twice. The exp sucked to say the least.

(sorry for double post, just had to add this)

no, you wasn't the only one

/point <me>

really? I dun remember you.. hehe ^^ maybe I just didn't know ya.. when joo start up the game?

over a year ago. When it came out O.o;;

sadly, I could only play twice a week untill december 21st -.-

ah hehe ^^ that's about when I got it.. but didn't really play it until december cause of school XD actually.. didn't really play it at all O.O hehe ^^

impresive to have got RDM to 70+ without playing ;)

The game bores me too much at times to the point where I take many months of breaks ><

glad to know I'm not the only one =/ was 70 for couple of weeks, been 74 for probably 3 months or so >.<

I just want to add that I rarely hear people say:
"OMG we don't have a RDM who will now Paralize and Slow the mob?!!!"

No there are only two reasons why you choose RDM for other jobs and those are "Refresh" and "Dispel".

I can agree about that Dispel should be higher priority than Refresh but other than that Refresh should be the highest! *Spoken from the view of a Summoner ^^*

But even tho I am a Summoner I know what people say. It's ALWAYS, get a RDM or BRD so we got a refresher. It's NEVER get a RDM so they can cast "Paralyze".

Another thing is that even if RDMs whould not have Dispel they would be invited for Refresh but I'm not sure it would work the other way around.

RDM get invited to pt's because of Refresh, people know about everything else but they do not put it as highest priority.

Just wanted to point that out.

I don't really give a damn if I get Refresh or not while I'm in a party. A Rdm has more important things to do than refresh a Blm that has 775 MP. Like Keep Refresh on people need MP to keep others in your Party from dying, like the Pld or the Whm.

Really and truely there is no "Right" way to do things as a rdm (however, there is a wrong way to do things strangely enough). Everyone plays differently. It helps to keep things interesting.

IMHO a good red mage can accomplish the following:

No sitting for a pld, in effect creating a second Skillchain maybe with a job that gets more TP than the other half of the First skill chain. Like a Sam/rng and a Drk/thf. The Samurai is gonna solo every other weapon skill, why not make it a chain if possible

No positive status effects for mobs

Enfeeble the hell outta mobs so the Healer can heal and the Blm can Nuke or keep a finger on the Stun Macro.

Extra MB damage, However insignificant it may be.

And throw a Few cures every once in a while, taking some heat of the healer.

Any rdm that can do Some of those is decent, a rdm that can do most of those is good, and one that can do all of those is awesome.

But it's not my job and I don't make suggestions to a person playin a support Job like rdm. Even simple ones like, "Refresh please" or "Dispel please". Because even if this person screws up as rdm, chances are someone in the party is still getting refreshed, and noone dies if a rdm screws up.
