Something i got around to completing for a change. Here's some images.

I implemented a video of the QRIO robot in a lighting project cause i love them so much. For the sake of what i am, it was best that i model and animate one after this.

And here is some unfinished progress. I smoothened some of it just for the picture, you can see a pic of a real QRIO in the back there i used for reference. Still i wish there was a blueprint for it cause it would have made things easier. I had to scrounge around for awhile to find reference images of the joint where the upper leg starts. Because it's a 3 point set up at that joint, i had to get creative when rigging the skeleton. Rigging it took me a few days to solve. I have the solution, but if any of you CG artists know a solution i would like to hear it v.v

Fooling around with it before i got a decient finish. On a side note it's always best to stick with one thing at a time.

Basic render unsmoothened

While animating it, i went back to rendering and i pulled this off. By this point i wanted to make a prank video add for a PS3 game, to see if it can make any noise. Excuse the jagged edges, i had the render engine set to preview mode for quicker render times.

Recreated the lighting scene from my Jazz project, except i had to increase some of the lights by 90,000 before it would be strong enough to meet my vision. I turned this one into my Desktop. It wasn't smoothened and the glow effects were too bright might i add. The QRIO was also appearing a grayish colour. Mental Ray has an amazing ability to reflect light off of surfaces, making it the coke or pepsi of rendering engines

Tweaking the shader and adding colour to the stage caught me off gaurd this time. I felt satisfied for a change. Critiqe from my colleagues suggested that the QRIO was too reflective. I myself thought the black joints wouldn't work being costom and all. It hid too much detail.

So i made them gray again like they are supose to be

Here's one with a floor. Aside from reflection, the lighting bouncing gave the look of the QRIO a slightly different finish.

So when everything was done it came time to make a batch render so i can make a self contained movie of the files. I learned that Mental Ray is DAMN SLOW when making motion blur, the test render took 59 minutes. There were 818 frames to render out, and it would have taken my PC about 6 weeks to complete the batch render if i left it to render 24/7.

So what i did was i used the stock Maya Render engine. I reduced the reflection as suggested and removed the background. I would have perferred the mental ray renders, but motion blur was an issue, without motion blur, the animation will look like a stop motion animation. I wanted it to be very smooth. The end result turned out like this.

I totally removed the background but left it optional to composite a background if i want to later. I also put in a new hardwoodfloor cause the other one was crap. I tossed in a light for that monitor in the back there and coloured the light green. the Green is only visible if you look at the QRIO from behind or along that edge. The stock Maya Render engine liek any other render engine except Mental Ray, cannot really reflect light, so i put a light under the ground facing up and assigned it not to see the floor. I coulourd it a little and added decay to it. Even though it does not show, if i took it out you'd see how it effects the over all look.

The model has alot of inaccurate curves. It's the best i can do simply by looking at various reference pictures. One thing i do know is that it is very close to the real QRIO.

I'll be uploading a video with the QRIO project on Youtube very soon. When i do i'd like some critique. (acctually i don't want critique but i need it for self improvement, so let me have it lol.)

"I'll edit this post and put the Youtube link here in 2 or 3 days."
