Better grab an 80 gig model while you can...

An anonymous Best Buy employee yesterday leaked an internal memo that showed the retailer was planning to no longer stock and distribute the 80GB Sony PlayStation 3 as of January 28. This quickly sparked rumors that that the console is moving to a single SKU retail option in the US.

Although Sony has yet to comment on the buzz, sticking with a single, cheaper model actually makes sense if they want to concentrate on getting costs down. To further validate this, North America is the only region that still supports a multi-system lineup as Japan and the UK have already dropped the higher capacity models in favor of the cheaper 40GB model. Of course, this would also mean future PS3 buyers will be left out with no memory card readers, and no backwards compatibility for PS2 software.

Let’s not forget, however, that they have also said they will “continue to evaluate consumer demand and market trends,” and may introduce more PlayStation 3 models in the future based on that feedback.

oh fuck.. they should have just stuck with the 60 gig model which could have backwards compatibility and such :| glad I got mine which can have all that fun stuff

Nothing official announced. I don't see a reason to "panic". They could be getting rid of the current stock to change up a bundle (Motorstorm was a decent game but maybe something fresher is needed), perhaps get rid of the bundle version and release the 80GB version at a slightly lower price with no packed in game, maybe changing the SKU because they are packing in the Dual Shock 3, perhaps perhaps perhaps. Maybe they are actually discontinuing the 80GB but it is just one possibility of many.

Perhaps the sales are shit lol.

Everything I've seen has said the 80GB version sells better than the 40GB version . Really I don't know. I just keep seeing folks yelling "The sky is falling! Buy one while you can!" and nobody ever provides any perspective. Just throwing other possibilities.

Thats why I bought my 60GB the week before they discontinued them.

We still have a new 60GB at my store. I'm planning on buying it pretty soon.

I think Best Buy is discontinuing carrying the 80 Gig because a lot of people only just need the 40 Gig HD in the 40 gig one. Sony sets a price so they can turn a profit then Best Buy increases the price a little so they can make a profit and they could just not be turning a profit on the 80 gig at a lot of stores so they don't see a point into ordering more of the 80 gig.

I'm sure it's a lot cheaper to make the PS3 if there's only one sku. I just hope that the single PS3 sku is backwards compatable because there's still a lot of PS2 owners waiting for GTA4 to hit. Too bad Metal Gear Solid won't hit first.

according to GT MGS 4 is the most anticipated game of 2008 with FFXIII at second and SSBB at 3rd :P

ive heard rummors that the 80 gig is going to be replaced by a 120gig version that comes with the dual shock3 controller

as long as you get a backwards compatible version you can make the HD any size you an afford. It's just a laptop SATA HD...

On that note I picked up my 80 gig last week.

If you get the sony visa from Sony you get $100 off and no interest for 12 months and free shipping.
