Sony to replace defective demo discs with games
by Tom Bramwell

Sony Computer Entertainment America has offered to replace defective PlayStation Underground demo discs sent out recently in the USA with a free PlayStation 2 game, according to reports, following widespread condemnation of a bug in one of the demos which deleted Memory Card save game data rather unceremoniously.

The PlayStation Underground disc featured a demo of Capcom's Viewtiful Joe 2, recently released on PS2 and GameCube in the US, which would wipe clean any Memory Cards inserted at the time - much to the despair of PS2 owners who hoped to get a glimpse of one of the most anticipated beat-'em-up games of the year.

When it emerged that the disc destroyed save data, SCEA issued an apology and advised users not to play the demos with a Memory Card inserted. However now it seems that the higher-ups have decided to distribute free games as well in an act of goodwill to the consumer.

The list of games covers a number of genres, and some of the games are distinctly new. The full list comprises Athens 2004, ATV Offroad Fury 3, Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec, Hot Shots Golf Fore!, MLB 2004, Parappa the Rapper 2, Sly 2: Band of Thieves and Wild Arms 3.

American gamers affected by the problem - or simply in possession of the PlayStation Underground disc in question - are being encouraged to contact SCEA (1-800-345-7669 via phone), who will then supply an address to send the disc to. The company is safeguarding the scheme against opportunists who might exploit it by limiting it to one game per PS2 serial number.

Japanese Donkey Konga also wipes memory cards..... :(

I lost all my data since day one of owning the cube!!! Damn you SMAP and your insane conga grooves!!

I'm glad I've not put the Disk in yet.

Maybe I should get ahold of one of those disks and then get some free games.

It’s a free Magazine, you sign up for it at playstation.com

DAMNIT, didn't work.

I called and was like "I got your damn demo disc and it wrecked my shit and I need the Rappa game now!" They said ok and took down all my info. Finally after taking down all my info they asked for the number on the CD. Little did I know, the CD I had was a different one then the Viewtiful Joe CD. The lady said, "ummmmm, sir... that is not the disc that contains the problem you spoke of..." So I had to made up a story about how I grabbed the wrong disc when I left for work and blah, blah, blah.

I really wanted that game too. :(

my friend mikemann did that, I laughed at him. He's probably laughing at me now, though, since he gets a free game :D

Odd...I'm not a member of playstation underground, but I got a little card in the mail about that demo disc...I guess the demo was on the Playstation magazine too...do I get a free game?

Hah, edit. I looked and looked and couldn't find the magazine the disc came from, so I called, and apparenlty it's not that disc. I wish I'd know that before I wasted a half hour of that guys time...heh

Just imagine all your FFVII FFVIII IX and X data poofing. I sure as all hell would not be satisfied with some crap game thats going down to the bargain bin if its not taken by folks that got the demo disc :(

Am I looking a gift horse in the mouth? =\
