I was studying today listening to some ffxi tunes. South gusty just reminded me of those times when I used to wake up early morning. I'd get up early before work, which usually started at 10, and started exping from killing bees, bats, and crabs. There's just so much memory for me when I hear the south gusty music. Ahhhh what has this game done to me....!!!!

South gusty is where I started my adventures too, and I did the exact same thing. There was such a different feeling to the game back then! It was a genuine sense of adventure and exploration and possibility. I really do miss it sometimes - it's so different than the endgame grind and the drama.

Likewise, reminds me of my very-short-lived days back on Ifrit before coming here and doing it all over again. Gustaberg still latches onto me and drags me down memory lane every so often, its nice to know I'm not alone in that.

Same here with Gustaberg. My cousin was playing it one day and that's when I discovered the game entirely. I was captivated man, it was my first time seeing a MMORPG let alone a FF one.

You're completely right though, Clev. That endless exploration is completely opposite to the endgame.

Ahh yes, the good ol' days of hunting shit down in gusty. The music does bring a sort of nostalgia everytime i run thru gusty omw to the maw, or to farm a few crystals. Good times, good times.

I know how you feel. The music in the Ronfaure zones gives me the same feeling of nostalgia whenever I happen to be in either East or West Ronfaure.

I have fond memories of south gusty too. Many days with leaping lizzy, many deaths

the music in Ronfaure does it for me as well.
Makes me remember the times before I knew how to /check (Damn you, Forrest Hare! My first death!)
Trying to avoid Orcs on the way to the outpost, finding out that the little camp fires are not a safe place to rest, and the first time leaving Ronfaure for La thein...
It was windy out there.. birds where IT+... I was a scared level 7 BLM Taru. ;.;

Same, when I'm in Ronf it makes me kind of sad. It makes me remember my friends who have quit the game now, as well as feeling of "possibility" I had when I first started. I tried starting a new character, but it just wasn't the same, since I know what's coming up in the game. :( wish I could have that fresh start feeling again..

You can! in FFXIV lol

I suppose so :P but it still won't be the same! Most of my old friends have moved on and won't be playing FFXIV ; ; but looking forward to making new ones! Still, it's sad to think of old friends who have quit, especially ones you've lost contact with.. it makes me feel old, really. ><
God, my first memory of this game is being on West Ronf as Dessine (my first character) a lvl 5 mnk.. I had met a bunch of random people and started my first party ever, and we were sat around a campfire "roleplaying" eating marshamallows and so on ..
Next thing you know, the orcs that hung around the campire popped back. Someone must have killed them before we showed up, lol.
Good times. <3

I get a little sad, I remember starting off and having the Bastok music, the Gustaberg music. The lightning and thunder effects in Konschtat and the Selbina music that I spent so many hours enjoying all those years ago.

So many good times. It reminds me, that even though SE has been a thorn in our sides on many issues, once upon a time, a long time ago, they had a damn good game. And I'll never forget it.

Back when I started playing, my first week playing. I started a character on Odin by accident, my friend Ardin started here, it was pure chance that we landed on this server. I didn't know I was on Odin and he didn't know he was on Quetzy so we spent like 2 hours trying to figure out why we would meet at the same place, and we couldn't find eachother. So he got a guy to give him money for a world pass the next day, and I made Tymon. I started off as a RDM. April 2004.

Coming up on five years since then, though not five years of consecutive play.

I truely hope that FFXIV will be able to give me the kind of nostalgia and enjoyment that I spent in my early days with FFXI, but since I'm older and times have changed, I somehow just don't think it's possible.

Edit: I forgot the most important part.

My first Christmas in the game, I was around a level 40 PLD at the time. I was posting on QCDN in it's very early days by then. The Jeuno Christmas music was just so great to me. Ever since then, it's been a tradition, whether I was playing or not, I would either reactivate my own account, or log on a friends for Christmas to enjoy that music in-game and have fun with my friends, just one more time. It's not really "one more" time, but it's happened every year since then. And I'm going to do it this year, too.

It's just my way of saying Merry Christmas to a game that had a profound effect on my younger years, and gave me a lot of enjoyment during them.

FFXI will always be special to me because it is the first MMO that I have ever played. Also as some people have pointed out, I started playing it when I was younger so I doubt another game will ever be the same.

I wonder if I can pull 18 hour parties anymore lol. I feel sleepy after 2 hours now.

I love roaming in Ronfaure, and the Windurst music makes me kinda hungry (cooking guild!) going through the staircases in the houses in San d'Oria makes me sick (I can't play FPS because I get motion sickness). The first time I played FFXI, I got so sick after 20 mins I had to go to bed and sleep it off, all thanks to the San d'Orian houses I was exploring. I was so sad when I thought that I couldn't play FFXI until I found out how to move without a mouse. That made everything all better.

I'm a naturally nostalgic person, that's why I never have enough MH space lol. Cluttered with useless stuff I can't bear to throw away.

5 years on, sometimes I'm really surprised what I spent my life on lol.

Bolded for emphasis. I can't level mage jobs for that exact reason: Playing main healer just feels like power leveling a group without any of the safety that comes from being 50 levels higher. I can't do it without getting bored or antsy after like, an hour.

the Ronfaure and sarutabaruta music does it for me,

my first memories of the game are wandering around in sandy, finally finding ronfaure and hooking up with a few random people, and then stumbling across the twinkling treants. i remember being blown away by the twinkling treants and just how nuts they were at that lvl, :D anyone else remember them?(twinkling treants from the Christmas after NA launch)

overall i remember how utterly lost i was, and that's the part i miss the most. NO game ever pulled me in like that "lost" feeling i got from ffxi and the exploring and finding new things, i remember walking to jueno at lvl 12 and BARELY making it there by the hair on my ass. a really nice jp drk helped me and my buddy get there, i remember trying my best to communicate threw the auto-translator and then shitting a brick when i saw him use guillotine on a gobbue.

man those were the days.

I've still got my Clipeus. From when my warrior tanked the dunes. I got it at level 7, no sub. Can't throw it out.

For the bold, I totally agree. I really miss just wandering around and exploring. I remember taking the manaclipper for the first time and exploring Bibiki Bay. :D Such good memories.

Don't mention boats. XD I still remember the first time Anapuna and I went on the boat from Selbina to Mhura. XD

Played out something like this:

<Kajimaru> (Level17ish BLM)Wow! It's kinda relaxing on this boat.
<Anapuna> (Level 30ish MNK)^^
Kajimaru beings to explore the ship.
<Anapuna> That's strange, did the music just stop for you?
<Kajimaru> Now that you mentioned it..
<Anapuna> Hey look, Another ship!

*10 minutes later*

Anapuna and Kajimaru are hiding in the lower level behind the door that leads outside when the ship docks.
<Kajimaru> ; ;
<Anapuna> I saw some higher levels out there, maybe we'll be fine. ^^; (Like level 50s)
Higher leveled ppl is defeated by Blackbeard.
<Anapuna> D:
<Kajimaru> O.O
