So, don't think anything was posted about it elsewhere, definitely not around in this forum where it should be :P

But ya, anyone watch the VGA? It was alright, I don't think GTA IV deserved Game of the Year imo. So many more games I got more enjoyment outta :P

You aren't the majority of gamers.

2008 was also pretty weak on the releases until late autumn. GTA 4 was pretty much the best game around until then.

Its still a shame that such a generic game like GTA4 got GoTY though. L4D would have been a dramatically better choice.

ya but I matter the most in the world ^^ so clearly what I say is always right.

And true, a lot of the games that I'd prolly pick for GoTY did only come out recently but, ah well :P

I'm not sure about this but would games that came late this year, October - December, be candidates for GoTY next time around and not this time? I don't see GTA 4 bein' even a decent game much less a winner if games like GoW 2 are in the mix. I didn't watch the show though so I'm not sure what else it was competin' with, doesn't look like much of anything if it won.

GoTY nominees were GTA4, LBP, Fallout 3, MGS4 and GeoW2.

The awards are based on fan vote so... Its clear the best game won? I mean the majority did vote for it.

I dunno... there are questions about how the older voters in Florida meant to vote. "Oh dear... I meant to choose Pong and accidentally cast a vote for Grand Theft Auto. Curse you, butterfly ballots!"

It seems like a decent enough pick. GTA4 was pretty amazing. I didn't play it myself, but I spent enough time watching others play it to appreciate the scale of what they've done.

My personal favorite from the nominees is Fallout 3, but I'm comfortable with the winner.

Spike's VGA's are really just advertising spots for games, the awards being rather skewed to 'hype'd' rather than 'good'

Game Developers Choice Awards is where its at if you want to know where the real awards are.

I dont understand... The devs opinion is more important then the consumers to you? I believe fan choice is most important as far as video games go. I dont give a freak what a dev thinks is game of the year to be honest... I dont agree that GTA4 is GoTY. I would have even given it to Deadspace, which was not even nominated. But obviously the masses believe GTA4 was GoTY and i can understand why... Huge game, huge hype, huge expectations met and huge fanbase. They are all opinion awards anyways, i would think by having so many fans voting tho it would eliminate alot of bias.

I don't really like GTA IV personally compared to the others, oh the online is fun and it's fun to screw around, but you can't screw around like you could with the old ones :( it's why Saints Row 2 is tempting and I think I might enjoy more

little big planet shouldn't have gotten a nomination for GoTY. I'm ok with GTA4 winning, but I would have voted for fallout 3 myself.

It was kinda obvious GTA4 would take it this year. Instead of thinking of what game you enjoyed the most, it's more like which game had the biggest impact this year. Hell, if it wasn't GTA4 I would have expected WoW Wrath of the Lich King to take it, or maybe Gears of War 2. I personally would have liked Fallout 3 to win, but yeah, GTA4 did make a huge impact, despite peoples opinions it sold an insane amount of copies it's opening week and was vastly praised by just about every major review site out there, not much competition for it this year.

GTA IV sold so well off the success of previous GTAs I'd say, not off its own merit, much as how FF sells these days XD (lol XII). Off its own merit, the game really had too much to take the fun out (annoying friends and cousins calling you so often and a bit less fun items like jet packs or planes or whatnot). It's not bad at all, it was fun, but I play games for fun, GTA IV wasn't as fun as previous GTAs.

But I wonder, what is their basis for Game of the Year? Is it what sold the best? Is it what game got the best reviews? Is it entirely fan choice kinda thing (cause I don't remember there being a voting thing anywhere XD)? Ah well, I still would agree with Osy or whoever up there and say Dead Space deserves it more or Left 4 Dead or something else.. even WoW WoTLK cause what it just added is prolly going to help change MMOs further, what with their phasing idea so that when you do quests you actually FEEL like you're making a difference.

I couldn't see it going to Left 4 Dead. Playing online with friends is great, but the game is completely useless as a single-player experience. It's fun, but hardly worth such a ...prestigious award.

I don't think GTA shoulda won over Fallout, but it makes sense in terms of number of votes it would have gotten. GTA just appealed to a larger crowd.

I believe i heard during the show that it was fans vote for each award. You know what tho... They didnt even put SSBB up there. I hate the new version personally but i would think it may have received a huge chunk of the votes. I did not even like the nominees but they chose em i guess... Should have been GTA4, Deadspace, Fallout3, MGS4, Geow2, SSBB and i think thats it man.

i hang with ALOT of hardcore gamers, and i swear this is the first time when mentioning what game won game of the year where not a single person i know agreed that it should have won, they all went "GTAIV wtf?!" thats pretty odd to me that not one person actually gave a care or a reason why it should have bee goty.

GTA4 has the unlucky position of being released many months ago and so everyone here has pretty much forgotten that it's an incredibly solid game, with a fun campaign and pretty much endless side stuff worth doing. Calling a game the "best" is incredibly subjective. It's the game that made the most money, so from a business perspective sure why not?

Best game to me was definetly MGS4, but I'd give Fallout 3 props, and I give GTA4 respect as well, not to mention Pixeljunk Eden, LittlebigPlanet, Valkyria Chronicles, Resistance 2... a lot of really top notch games. To say which is best is kinda like asking if red, green or blue is best. You can make the case for any of them and it just really matters what your personal preference is.

I'm actually glad there's nothing really on the horizon til Killzone 2 comes out, because I'm pretty content with the games I already have.

By the way, I'm surprised nobody mentions Braid anymore. When it came out, everyone's talking about how it's their GOTY, then a week later everyone forgot it. Haven't played it myself, but I will. Just thinking out loud, maybe people have such low expectations for downloadable titles they didn't know what to make of it.

By the way, with regards to LBP, to me it's kind of a 2nd wind game. I tried it for like an hour, shrugged it off for a while, then came back to it and just loved it. It's not for everyone and you kinda have to be in the mood for it... but if you like making your own content, trying other people's content, collecting items, playing with friends and strangers, ext.. it's very easy to just start playing it and having it just take you over.

Oh yeah... and I know Disgaea 3 isn't GOTY quality or anything but production values aside, I had as much fun playing it as any of the big dogs, even if it was a beefed up PS2 game with a somewhat repeatability formula. Just really wanting to play an old school styled TRPG and that coming along made it a great experience.

On the other hand, maybe some of us didn't really feel the need to play another sandbox GTA style game.

GTA4 is by no stretch of the imagination a bad game. I would agree with what Firestreak said, I think if GTA4 had come out within the past 2-3 months that more people would agree with it winning. For what it's worth, for all the nominees for GOTY, GTA4 content got significantly more hits per day on GameFAQs than all of the rest (and still does).
