I loved the Splinter Cell series. One of my most favorite of all time and then they drop Double Agent. Double Agent was up there with Bullet Witch for me, one of the worst games I have ever attempted to play through. I had given up on this series to the point of never keeping up with anything to do with Conviction. At the urge of one of my buddies I downloaded the demo and it blew my mind.
While it isn't anything like a true Splinter Cell, it's definitely the right start for a re-boot. I'm sure a lot of tried and true SC fans are having a hard time with their feelings on this game as it almost feels like it should have been re-named as it is pretty far from being what defines a SC game. So I'm sure the hardcore will give it flack but I guarantee you if it was a start of a new franchise called Tom Clancy's Ghost it'd be universally hailed.
The gameplay is simply fantastic. I thought going in on my first run if I was ever detected it'd be time to just sit still and die, like most of the older games, but it's far from it. It works like a stealth game and a shooter and does so perfectly. There are also more than just a few ways to disarm a situation as well. I've spent well over 2 hours on the demo and I've found that there are at least 8 ways to properly progress. To be honest this game feels like a light RPG with all of the choices you have to approaching each situation and the things you can upgrade.
The new execute system is amazing to play with. It seems cheap, but the way it works they've pretty much made it so it isn't abusive. You have to get a CQC kill to trigger it and you get three targets to use it on. You can't stack CQC to get more than 3 target kills though, just the one. It really makes you think, "Okay, I'll mark these three for execution, death from above that guy, and quickly shoot this hanging object to take out the other two guards." It's also sweet to watch...
The last thing I'll hit on is the MP stuff. There is so much to do here it makes me giddy with the excitement that I'll be puttin' away BC2 and MW2 away, hopefully for good, with. They've brought over the rank up system from the Vegas games as well as the customization and weapon upgrade options. You can rank up online, offline, lan, or split screen, it doesn't matter as they're keepin' it casual. There are 4 modes: Co-op (which is a prequel story to the main story), Hunter (Basically Terrorist Hunt from the Vegas games), Last Stand (You guard an EMP from waves of enemies), and Face-off (a versus mode that pits you against another player and puts enemies on the map to hinder you killing each other). There is also Infiltration mode if you buy the special version but it's basically Hunter mode and if you get detected it's game over.
I played a lot of Terrorist Hunt, A LOT, so I can see myself playin' this game enough to make my hands hurt. So despite my hatred for Double Agent, I'll definitely be lookin' to this game to give me the needed hours to make the wait for Alpha Protocol not seem so bad. Anyone else lookin' forward to this? I know a few people around here loved Terrorist Hunt a lot as well.
