Square Enix is currently overwhelmed recovering many stolen accounts, the problem being much larger than they prepared for, though credit should be given to their significantly improved attention to this problem.

In light of this I've stepped up my security another notch, paying for service rated #1 detecting spyware, trojans and similar malware in a recent PC magazine.

Panda detected (and eliminated) spyware while viewing pages (no clicking ads or any other nonsense) on www.allakhazam.com a popular fansite from the beginnings of FFXI NA.

Is this quoted... or are you in some way associated with allakhazam?

More info please

Need more information.

What did you pick up? When? Any specific issues? I browse Alla daily on multiple occasions and I run numerous anti-virus/malware/adware, etc programs and I've never picked it up. Granted programs can miss, but if you were more specific on what you have encountered that could help everyone out a lot more.

I am not associated with Allakhazam, in the past I sought much of my info from there. From Panda's report the attempt to place spyware was when an ad was displayed. Note that I didn't click any ads.

Whether a tracking cookie or something even more malicious was not determined, as the threat was blocked and eliminated before it could be placed.

As for Square Enix overwhelmed, that comes for a conversation with there account recovery staff with a real life friend who's in the process of recovering an account hijacked, likely by the mmo trojan that's been going around lately. He was told a week to recover lost items, its been two and he's was told to that a week was too optimistic, to expect as long as it takes.

This really isn't new information, Allakhazam is owned and operated by RMT companies and has had subtle adware and spyware on it for at least a year now.

It's a much bigger problem on the WoW side, I guess it's just now hitting FFXI's part. I haven't used the site in years, personally.
