From IGN.com:
April 18, 2006 - Remember that next-generation massively multiplayer online RPG trailer Square Enix showed at Microsoft's pre-E3 press conference last year? While Square Enix stated that the trailer was merely a test demo for an MMORPG running on a next-generation game system or operating system, the showing at Microsoft's press conference suggested that Xbox 360 would be a target platform for the resulting title. It turns out that this may not be the case.

Speaking with Impress Watch on the eve of the Final Fantasy XI: Treasures of Aht Urhgan launch in Japan, FFXI producer Hiromichi Tanaka stated, "As we work on Final Fantasy XI, we're currently working on a new MMORPG targeting Windows Vista and PS3." Square Enix is hoping to make the game a worldwide title, Tanaka added.

Although Tanaka did not make specific mention of Xbox 360, his statements on future MMORPG developments at Square Enix were on the whole pretty vague. He did not state if the new game targeting the PS3 or Windows Vista has anything to do with the trailer shown at E3. Nor did he shed further light on how the footage shown at E3 relates to Final Fantasy XI, only restating that it might be an extension of FFXI, it might be something that exists along side it, or it might be something to counter it.

Future PS3 owners looking to play a next generation version of FFXI on Sony's new system come November are out of luck, though, as Tanaka stated that getting such a title ready for the system's launch would be impossible. Tanaka did not, however, comment on the possibility of an updated version of FFXI for the system, similar to what the Xbox 360 is getting. And sadly, the website failed to ask the obvious question: will the PS2 version of FFXI be playable on PS3?

Discuss.

PS3 FF? wow just throw in another fucking system for FF, that is if they put it on PS3

Another fucking system eh?? C'mon man......its Sony!! Sony has been with Square since FF7. You gotta give em more credit than that. Sony is gonna be with SE for life, and FF titles will always be on the Playstation. XBOX is just a.......how do you put it? A pick up system....yea, that sounds about right. In the beginning it was Nintendo, but now Sony is their main man and I've loved it that way. Plus, XBOX isnt a huge console for RPGs in the first place. We've all known that Sony always had most of the bit RPG titles.

Am I a Playstation fan boy? Well...yea...kinda, but so the hell what? Thats irrelevant. I say /huzzah to this news! Good find btw Wes. ^.^

Man, SquareEnix should just release its own console.[I think thats what you were saying before.] The FFS: "Final Fantasy System".

Screw partnering, SE could probably thrive on this. Make re-releases of all previous FF titles exclusive to the FFS, make all future FF games work only on this system. Geeze.

Doesnt even need CD's or Cartridges (if such a thing exists anymore. For shame N64).

Give it a detachable hard drive you can take into a store and download the new games via a hub in the store somewhere.

Then take it home, plug in the hard drive, and it will bring up a menu.

[Good Evening, Please Select your Game]

Then it gives you a list of FF games you have purchased.

Final Fantasy I
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy I & II, North American Release
Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy XI <<<<<<< Selected>>>>>>>>>
Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts: CoM
Kingdom Hearts II

[Loading.....Please Wait.....]

Boom, you have your console.

<derailment>

The cartridges were the only thing that saved N64's performance while running games. Another, much more damning design flaw was what really killed that system, NOT the cartridges.

So with their game catalogue in mind anyone got any speculations as to what they'll go with?

I'd bet either Dragon Quest or Secret of Mana..

I was at one time hearing rumors of a sort of Strategy game MMO hybrid project in the works, however like I said it's only rumors.

I would actually like to see something original, dont get me worng I love the contiuation of the series's (hell I've been playing FF from day one in the US) but sometimes something new and fresh is great.

Course how bout this for a remake.... A Bushido Blade MMO...... how bout them apples.

Could just be Front Mission Online... kekekekekekekeke

I don't think its another Final Fantasy MMO really, I believe its the new title "Fantasy Earth" that has been known for quite some time I believe.

just hooked up meh snes to play Secret of Mana again...favorite game of all time, fun story, great music, controls, and 2 player action. Would love to see another Secret of Mana... :nyam:

Fantasy Earth is already released in Japan from my understanding. I hope that isn't what they are tlaking about. Fantasy Earth really doesn't seem very appealing to me.
