Remember a couple years or so that rumors surfaced of a possible FFXI sequel? Well that ain't gonna happen... probably.

However, SE's next MMO is this, currently code named "Rapture". The game is being developed using the multiplatform "Crystal Tools Engine" (Formarly White Engine) and its developer is Hiromichi Tanaka

Rapture (ラプチャー) is the code name of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) currently in development by Square Enix. Hiromichi Tanaka, producer of the MMORPG Final Fantasy XI, has announced that Square Enix has begun work on this game. He added that Square Enix is hoping to make the game a worldwide title. At this stage of development, details are guarded closely, although Tanaka has confirmed that the title is being developed for the Xbox 360 and for personal computers running the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. Tanaka did not rule out the possibility that the company might develop it for the PlayStation 3 at some point in the future, but it is not developing it on that platform at this time. The MMO is being made using the Multiplatform Crystal Tools.

Square Enix has confirmed the title is being developed for the Xbox 360 and Windows Live/Vista. They stated a PlayStation 3 version is possible in the future. All earlier reports that it was being developed for the PlayStation 3, and that the Xbox 360 was dropped are false. Square Enix and Hiromichi Tanaka have confirmed it will land on the Xbox 360 and Windows Live first.

Currently they have not decided whether the game will be part of the Final Fantasy series or not.

Yes this info is from wikipedia, however it was confirmed at GDC. So...

Discuss.

on wiki and here, people have knew SE is making another MMO, but isn't release any info til recently.

I don't think it will be FFXI squel, if it does, FFXI user may move on and play (FFXIV?) and FFXI will be shut down.

It'll be so gay if it run Vista only and DX10.. i hope they have XP and DX9 compatiable

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_Tools

Is usually call White Engine, is been used in FFXIII and the FFVII opening scene redone on FFVII

In the latest GDC conference it was confirmed that Crystal Tools is focused to work with PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC Windows, as well, the Wii

Also White Engine use CGI

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer-generated_imagery
Computer-generated imagery (also known as CGI) is the application of the field of computer graphics or, more specifically, 3D computer graphics to special effects in films, television programs, commercials, simulators and simulation generally, and printed media. Video games usually use real-time computer graphics (rarely referred to as CGI), but may also include pre-rendered "cut scenes" and intro movies that would be typical CGI applications. These are referred to as FMV (Full motion video).
CGI is used for visual effects because computer generated effects are more controllable than other more physically based processes, such as constructing miniatures for effects shots or hiring extras for crowd scenes, and because it allows the creation of images that would not be feasible using any other technology. It can also allow a single artist to produce content without the use of actors, expensive set pieces, or props.
Computer software such as LightWave 3D Maya and Softimage XSI are used to make computer-generated imagery for movies, etc. Recent accessibility of CGI software and increased computer speeds has allowed individual artists and small companies to produce professional grade films, games, and fine art from their home computers. This has brought about an Internet subculture with its own set of global celebrities, clichés, and technical vocabulary.
Simulators, particularly flight simulators, and simulation generally, make extensive use of CGI techniques for representing the Outside World (OTW).
  • Companies making the highest levels of flight simulators such as the so-called 'Level D' (the highest technical level for civil aircraft training and recognised on both sides of the Atlantic) normally produce their own CGI system for use in their simulators. Other simulator companies buy in a CGI system from a specialist supplier. Companies making Level D flight simulators include CAE (Canada, Germany and USA), FSI (USA), Link division of L-3 Communications, Lockheed Martin (Orlando), Rockwell Collins (USA) and Thales (France and UK)

So ya is basicly next Gen graphic, you may need powerful computer to run (FFXIV?) Rapture

edit: just wondering shouldn't be this on off-topic section? :P This isn't related to FFXI :3

Design-wise, that looks like FFXI with higher quality graphics

I'd say in my opinion that this will end up somehow being related to FF or XI in some way or another. I mean, just take a look at the hume in that screenshot to the far left (if that is infact the final design they have gone for and not just a screenshot from that concept trailer they did a while ago) it's pretty much identical to FFXI's male hume... Even the way the clothing fits, shoulder pads and stance...-_-; lol.

or even another sort of "Expansion" in the "FFXI: Compilation". Good old SE £$£$£$£$£. :D

Let the speculation begin?

I think it would be pretty funny if they forsake Sony altogether and release for the XBox and Windows platforms... y'know... since it's a Japanese project and all. I always figured that was the only reason XI was released on the PS2 platform, but I'm also pretty ignorant on software companies and contracts and stuff.

After FF11 I dont really see myself getting into any other mmo, especially by SE. And does it really matter if it has FF in the title? I mean most numerical FF's dont have anything to do with the other FF titles anyway, so it really doesnt matter if its called FF or not.

That image was taken off a tech demo they made for E3 2005. The image probably doesn't represent what the game will look like.

I think it won't be called FF. If it was labled FF, I would bet it'd get the same player base FFXI recieved, but if it had a new name, it would break out from just the die hard FF fans and maybe get some of the WoW customers... if it's a good game. It basically name recognition and while FF is a good name, it doesn't have the pull as some of the bigger MMOs.

And is it me or do they really need to add some color to their games? Seems lately the colors have been very dull and drab versus the lively florescent colors you'd see in some other MMOs.

Plz SE, say no.

When there is actually good solid information and a release date, then I'll decide if I'll take the bait. I'm not worried about the system requirements, I'm good on that front. Should prove interesting, regardless.

With the exception of Final Fantasy X-2, --none-- of the other FF games have anything to do with each other. That's part of its appeal, imo.

The creators of FFXI have already ruled this out as bein' a sequel to FFXI. The FFXI crew said they have no plans to stop workin' on their game durin' or after this game's release.

FFXI shouldn't and better not be shut down. If anything, bumped to PC onry. Since the new age, pretty much I feel safe to say 9/10 people have a computer in their homes, 6 of those 9 have PCs capable of running FFXI (not to best quality though). If they do that, they may lose customers, but the truly dedicated players, would switch, not to mention, I believe most of FFXIs players are PC players. If not PC and another console. ~ PS2 is an out of date system. When they stop making games for a system. It's obsolete. Yes, they make ones on the PS3 for the PS2 with down graded graphics. But I feel that FFXI should continue. A reason why FFXI is faultering I see, is because most of FFXI is NPC based. A LOT of WoW and other MMOs are PvP. Sure we have Ballista. Though this all just cycles around and becomes never ending.

If you can play as a Samurai, I'll switch over.

=P if it has mah furries, i'm set!

As long as FFXI is profitable the servers will be open. I wouldn't worry until at least two rounds of server merges occur. I wouldn't be surprised if SE starts there own version of Station Pass where you get a slight discount to subscribe to both XI and the new one. Instead if $12.95 and $14.95 individually, you can subscribe to both for ~$20-25. Just speculation.

That image is just about the only image I can find at this time. Everything SE make is kept under alot of secrecy until release, and the same will go for this.

Also it would be awesome if they did a subscirption to both. Still... POL support may be involved too... maybe. I'm just speculating, after all FFXI is on a POL base so Rapture might (Highly likely) will be POL too. Sure would make things easier for users.

Edit: Just realised this thread would be perfect for a multiformat thread.

But thats why i'm asking if it even matters if its going to be "FF14: The Search for More Money" all SE has to do is just make known that its by them and the player base should have a base idea as to what to expect.

Where did I hear that line before?

Spoiler:
Spaceballs, where Yogurt mentions Spaceballs II: The search for more money

Anyways, if FFXIII doesn't improve over FFXII, I'm putting more faith in Mistwalker than SE.
