Square hints at broadening formats (Does not want PS3 to lose or win)

Square Enix senior vice president Michihiro Sasaki has hinted that the company may spread its support more widely across formats, compared to the current and previous generations of console.

Quoted by an article in the Wall Street Journal, Sasaki suggested that, "We don't want the PlayStation 3 to be the overwhelming loser, so we want to support them." He added, "But we don't want them to be the overwhelming winner either, so we can't support them too much."

The remarks suggest that Square Enix may now believe itself to be as important to the success of the PlayStation brand, in Japan at least, as the format is to the company's profits. However, rather than placing itself in the role of kingmaker, Sasaki seems to suggest simply that the company will spread its range of titles more evenly amongst the competing formats.

No, its my theory that its been blown way off proportions. Yes they made mistakes, Yes its going to cost them in the short run. No, its not going to explode and die on launch day.

The 360 suffers from the same flaw as the orginal did, Lack of good exclusive games. Why get the console when 90% of its good games are available on PC, or are all-console releases (need for speed Underground)

The only thing in the Wii that appeals to me is its price. But paying 199 for somthing with no worthwhile games seems a bit much.

It looks like what Mara is saying is to just wait and see how it plays out, rather that be a speculative, cynical, arm chair know it all. You don't have to do drugs to just relax and let a console and company do what it may. If Sony shoots themselves in the foot, time will prove that. If they enjoy success, more or less than expected, then time will prove that.

I'm not too sure why people actually give a fuck to be so passionate about how any given company conducts business. When the same people troll similar type topics time and time again, excited like a 13 year old ready to nut, only to offer the same input and personal agenda, it's really quite lame. Please realize that.

New consoles become available. We may choose to buy one platform or perhaps several, and then enjoy the games.

It's going to take nearly 6 months for them do drum up some decent number of PS3s, if you can consider 6 Million decent given the time frame. And assuming they don't screw up and it results in less.

When their competition can have easily twice that amount out with no effort, each, where would you want your games to be? The (speculatory)sold out 6 million PS3s, or the already established 13+ individual 360's and Wii's?

Consoles are worthless without developer support, and considering SCE has no first party developers, it hurts them even more. Should Microsoft or Nintendo had done the same thing, they atleast have their own developers to try to keep the system alive. Oh wait, Nintendo already did that with the GameCube, those assholes.

And stockholders can be hurt, which is the only reason I could see for a consumer to even say anything. Then again, even those who invest do so on the basis of their own decisions, and owning up to the results.

I banked when I invested in Sony prior to the release of the PS2. I wouldn't invest in Sony right now, simply because I like a sure thing, and this doesn't seem like a sure thing.

Will the PS3 be good? If it can survive through the barrage of faults due to it's awful launch paired with the sony first-gen curse, sure. I have no doubt it will if it does.

Dont take what I said the wrong way. I havent lost complete faith in Sony. I just think they are being stupid and SE is probably smart to have an escape plan incase they need it. But I also plan to wait for a while to see what goes down before getting any of the systems. I've always loved my PS2 the most, so I'm still hoping PS3 doesn't turn out to be a complete flop.

and i can bet that aproximatly 8-12 of those games will come out on PC, because microsoft will almost always publish PC if the game does well. Halo 1, Oblivion, Prey, ect.

And if the games do in fact do well, they'll come out later as a port. Fable is now PC if i remember. Microsoft will never alienate thier PC users, while they'll run the x-box, they still remain a PC company first.
