Stalin voted 3rd Greatest Russian...

The campaign, apparently led by Putin, to "reform" Stalin worries me. Nationalism in a former enemy is one thing, nationalism in a former enemy enshrining a man who murdered millions of his own countrymen out of sheer, raving paranoia is something else.

this is worrisome. wasn't it Krushchev who tried to deconstruct the cult of personality surrounding Stalin?

I was honestly more worried about China, rather than a reprisal of Russian Nationalism...until the later years of the Putin administration regime.

In Soviet Russa 3rd place is 1st place.

I'm not surprised though. Politicial protests are being severely limited under Medve...Putin I mean. The fact that Putin is changing legislation for him to run another term is kinda unnerving as well. Kruschev De-Stalinized Russia after his death by removing statues and any public semblance of Stalin.

Well, what has Russia been other than Communist in the past 150 years?

Before Lenin and his regime moved in, it was just a loosely kept monarchy with little to no world power at all.

Of course the Communist heroes are their top people.

Obviously it would be nice if they were not.. well.. communist, but that's just the area.

Little over 90 years of socialism (which is not the same as communism) actually, but aside from that, the first two places were not taken by socialist leaders, but rather by Tsarist figures in truth. Though it's argued that they only beat Stalin because the people conducting the poll pleaded with the public to choose someone other than Stalin.

Venerating Stalin would be similar to venerating Lincoln if Lincoln had, say, solved the problems we had with Union generals in the Civil War by murdering any general that he didn't like, murdering any officer he thought was too charismatic, murdering anyone who spoke out against the government in any way, murdering anyone who was accused of speaking out against the government in any way, murdering ethnic groups he didn't trust, and basically just murdering anyone who looked at him funny.

Heh. I'm not sure I would be very proud of the Romanavs either... But to choose Stalin? Then again, I'm sure their history books don't say the same things that ours do when it comes to Stalin.

I'd only worry if Ivan Drago wasn't #1.

And of course #2 would be...

I am concerned for the people of Russia. Let whatever government rule that may so long as people can live freely and express themselves at the expense of no other.

Putin is a good and a bad thing for Russia. He has led them through some troubled times, not unlike president Roosevelt, however his opinion on certain matters is very iron curtain. Different is not bad, but I tend to think my belief is not a common one. There is no reason America can't create stronger friendlier ties with Russia, ties that lead by example instead of tactics that embolden Russia's discordant policies.

I don't think people's issues with stalin are because he was a communist, rather because he caused the deaths of millions of his own people.

They are probably looking at it when the Soviet Union had it's greatness. And that actually was under Stalin that they had achieved superpower status. And he did a very large part in defeating the Nazi's.

This just shows the quality of the leaders that they have had, and the conditions that these men have had to deal with.

Just because their other leaders did not cause problems for the rest of the world, which would make us foreingers in turn not demonize them as we did Stalin, does not mean that those leaders were better for thier own country than was Stalin.

I'm not sure "greatest Russian" automatically translates into "best Russian" or even "nicest Russian." You can't deny the man's impact on the nation's history, and some of the voting may hinge on that. Adolph Hitler was Time's "Man of the Year," but it wasn't to celebrate him as a great guy.

Any campaign to "reform" Stalin makes me extremely nervous. I don't much care for the situation where Russia is flexing its economic muscle and obviously remembering the "good old days" of the USSR.

I was actually really happy they took back the USSR national anthem with a few lyrical changes. It's the best anthem I've ever heard, musically that is.

I know its slightly off topic but I just got a mental image of a pipsqueak flexing. Russia's economy is filled with potential right now, but no material as of yet.

It supplies something like 25% of the EU's natural gas, a fair amount of their oil, and a surprising amount of resources overall. Cutting off the gas supply is them flexing, and trust me, eastern Europe especially has noticed.

Aye plenty of nations in Eastern Europe that are 100% dependant on Russian gas.

That's true; they're certainly flexing what they've got.
