Star Trek MMO

if i can be the borg i will get it

We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own...

My heart still belongs to FFXI, but I could see myself trying it out. I could get into playing a Klingon.

You know, this is the kind of game my Dad would go nuts over, dear god I certainly HOPE this game has regional lockout >_>

I'm a trekkie and would really enjoy to see a quality rpg based on the series, however if it just dissolves into continual phaser battles against the Borg, Klingons, romulan's etc I could see it becoming disappointing fast.

Aye, I have a hard time seeing exactly how this game would work in any real sense. Sure, you can engineer a persistent world, dress up a bad FPS as your combat engine, and have ships of players running around performing missions on various planets.... but you run into a lot of problems implementing a game like that.

One way to build it I can think of would be to have each guild control a given ship. Guild renown can be used to upgrade vessels, etc, and the quality of your vessel determines the size of your guild and the bonuses it offers to players engaging in missions, etc. The down side of this particular method is that it assumes a level of cooperation that would be unusual for most MMOs, and ship-to-ship combat would be... utterly ridiculous, since it would almost by definition be forced to consist of boarding actions lest the entire playerbase rise up in revolt over who gets to fly the ship.

Simply having each player operate independently and use ships solely as a means of transportation leaves out an enormous part of the Star Trek world, however.

If only the quests would be this easy:

Unfortunately it's in my opinion conceptually impossible to replicate the Star Trek experience in MMO form for two reasons.

1. The chain of command means only one captain per ship. This means getting people to accept being in what could be considered something of a pyramid scheme, in where the later you join the game the harder it becomes to be a captain, as the older chain engineers and tactical officers become captains themselves. More likely, everyone is a captain, and therefore... the essential experience of the star ship is lost.

2. Even if you did have an affective chain of command, the realities of real life would make it impossible to manage a ship effectively. The captain may be sleeping, at school or at work when the Romulans attack or the ship gets pulled into some crazy wormhole. In star trek, the captain lives on the ship and can therefore respond to unexpected events. And what if you're logged off on the ship, and your ship then explodes? Do you log in dead, or in outerspace?

What would be great, is a Star Trek MMO-like single player game. Something along the lines of Oblivian, set in the Star Trek universe - wherein you can start off in the academy or as an ensign and work your way up to captain or even higher - and the world could immerse you inside the crew. They could then make that game multiplayer... where you have a save file that specifically requires all the people who started the game to be online together to continue it. Or an online world where you can take your single player or co-op players into a persistant world and fight rival factions for fun - but there are no missions.

Escape pod, lol maybe you could dock at a friendly Starbase before logging out, mind you what if the Borg come to assimilate you and your culture while you're at school/work/walking the dog etc...;)
