But back to the OP, I think it's a group of whales. I don't think SE would put a HNM there, but then again it IS a 100 hour boat ride, lol.

Then you haven't seen the whale-like tail go up and down out of the water... ahead of the ferry.

Thats actually a real phenomenon in RL.

A herd of whales (humpbacks, mostly) find a school of fish. they Then circle underneath them, blowing bubbles. The bubbles act like kind of a wall, and the whales make increasingly tigher rings until the fish are forced into a very tight pack.

Then the whales dive, and rise up from under the fish with their mouths wide open - getting huge mouthfuls of fishy fun. They generally surface all at the same time, and it looks exactly like that.

on topic: if you look out over the edge of the boats you'll see wa whale surface every now and then. shocked the hell out of me when i first saw it. where are the big sea mammals when you ride the ship to selbina and back?

That's because you can't float in airated water. If you can't float then you can't swim. That's also the reason the people that high-dive spray the top of the water they are jumping into, makes it so there is less of a chance you break your neck upon impact.
