Learn to love SATA. It's your friend. Most importantly, skillchains that involve SATA plant some big damage on the tank and allow you (as a blm) to magic burst for BIG damage without the fear of drawing hate.

Nothing's wrong with stoneskin/blink itself, however using it in pts isn't usually a good sign, blm shouldn't take hits, and you should try your best not to, if your tank sucks (which does happen) just use weaker spells and less of them.

Also do this: get your AM's mp cost, divide by the damage it does. then get some normal spells and do the same. Try this on stuff in east saru where resits won't happen. After that think about what happens if one of those spells gets heavily resisted, and think about what happens if a normal spell gets resisted, keep mp costs in mind. Then think about this: lets say your spell does 1000 unresisted and takes 18s to cast. now lets say you do FireIII then aeroIII which takes a total of ~12s to cast, if all spells are unresisted both meathods should do just about the same damage, one using well over 300mp and 18s, the other using 219mp and 12s, and not only that but since there'd be a ~7seconds spread between the two spells the tank can keep hate between the casts better than if it was all unloaded at once. (also note: fireIII->aeroIII unresited should cause enough hate to not be a good idea, this was for example purposes only)
Note: the number 1000 was made up (I used tornado for the cast time length) but from my experiances an unresited fireIII and aeroIII should be right around the area where unresited AM should do

Also, yeah AF is hard to get, but you should really try to gather up help to get it, if you're level60+ you surely must have friends who'd be willing to help.

If getting AF is really too hard for you, then at the very least try to have these things: Seer's Crown +1, Seer's Gloves +1, Seer's Slacks, Justacorps or black cotehardie (or HQ's), and garrison boots.

My only problem with your AF comment... If your over level 60, you should have a fully capable linkshell, or even maybe some friends.. Most people between level 40-60 can find people for af1 and af2.

You being level 60, get 2 people, and you can go do your af1 very easily.
Again get maybe a tank, a THF for th2 and you go do your af2.
Coffer's are always bitches, just find others who need it. Or pay a whopping 50k to get 75 help with keys.. I know its alot.... :roll:
All af3's are tough, just find people who need it as well, or set up an ls event..

As far as the AM use goes, I like it because it's efective, but only on a magic Burst. It should never be cast outside of a magic burst.

example:

if a lvl 52 Blm cast stone III to Burst Fragmentation, it cost 94MP and does about 350 damage. does 3 points of damage per MP used (roughly).

same mage bursting on Distortion with Freeze will do about 1200 damage for a spell costing 322MP. about 4 points of damage per MP used (roughly).

AM should only be cast while standing behind a pld who knows how to use Cover. and after you cast it, go get a drink or somethin, cause if you do anything else for a while, you are gonna get beat down.

I myself am a 54 Blm and haven't had the chance to burst with tornado yet as the only party I've been in couldn't find a decent skillchain at all, let alone for me to burst with AM. I don't have quake yet, 160k(!).

As far as -ga spells, I have NEVER used one during battle since I got Diaga and realized what they did back when I was that lvl like a year ago. They cost too much and don't do enough damage. Unless training a zone of course, in which case I've done well over 6000 damage to multiple mobs with Aeroga II.

But as far as being a blm in a party goes, don't spam spells, I usually Cast like this:
Shock>Blind>Thunder II> Bio II>Aspir>Drain(if I've grabbed hate)>Elemental Seal Stone III>Thunder II>Blizzard II>Thunder II> Trippyhippy gains 250 xp!!

When someone makes a mistake, it's allright, the world won't end. When they do it twice, they just haven't learned yet, if they do it a third time, you tell em about it, if they do it again, you elaborate, once more gets em kicked, or I'll leave. And a mistake is a death, not a near death or grabbing hate off a tank.

Ok look, mage, you have just touched on my biggest pet peeve in this game.

I don't give a damn about your AF weapon. BLM af weapon is corny.. But you have no excuse to get that for the sole reason to get your next AF part. You can't find help getting it? BS. You haven't made a big enough effort. There are plenty of people in this game, in your linkshell, on your friend list, who, if you set up a time with them (not just up and said one day, hey lets go get my shit because everyone has plans each day and you need to plan shit like this ahead of time) or offered services in exchange (no gil? sub whm or rdm? at lvl 56 you can offer a pl for a lower level in return for help. IMPROVISE.) they will more than likely help you. ADMIT IT, you are just LAZY.

You read this website right? There are about 10 different other websites I could link you to that detail gil making techniques in the game that you could be reading instead.
Gil is not hard to get, it just takes TIME to get, and I'm sorry baby, but if you've got time to level to lvl 56, you've got time to get your lazy ass out somewhere crafting or harvesting or growing or whatever the hell have you to make some gil to get some appropriate armor. And I'm not talking about all the best armor or all the +1 shit or all the things that are going to give you + on your stats. I'm just talking about upgrading your shit so that its level appropriate.

Don't even turn around and tell me you don't have time to do any of the gil raising or farming stuff or you don't feel like doing it. Like I said, if you have time to level you have time to farm. And if you want to retort with something like, farming is boring, i dont want to do it, then you shouldn't be playing ffxi let alone ANY mmo, because they ALL require getting money in the game to get the equipement that you need. There is NO excuse to not have the armor that you need OR the spells that you need, especially if you're going to nuke the shit out of stuff and get hit. AND YES, I AM A MAGE, I UNDERSTAND that sometimes you can nuke the piss out of things and not get any hate because of the tank or whoever is able to hold hate, but this VARIES from party to party and you need to learn PLEASE LEARN that things change and you'll need to adjust the way you play or fight by the way the party is working. If you want to be a pisshead and say, well teh other party could do it why can't you, then you're going to die, and it won't be anyones fault but your own for being stubborn about your casting routine.

As a BLM you need all the+ int gear you can get. If there is a way of getting more int that does not involve millions you damn well need to do it. AF is not that hard, nor is making gil. I have worked my ass off to get the gil for my gear and to do all my AF. I have no sympathy on how "hard" it is. As a WHM I am even worse at soloing and farming, yet I have found a way. Ask the people who know me, I have been putting my all into being the best damn WHM I can be. AF is not hard at all, obviusly you can not solo but find someone to do it with, there are ALWAYS people in jeuno looking to do coffer keys.

When I see people level their way up past me with shit gear and even less skill just because they get invites because of their job my teeth grind. (For some reason they all seem to be Taru WHM and BLMs but hey I jsut notice mages the most being one)

Do not make excuses for your failings. Stop fucking around and acomplish something.

I will adimt that you were courtious, but your audience was three people that each have 2 lvl 75 jobs and were working on thier third. I knew then all and all of them were sending me tells of frustration that you were nuking like a madman. You were uncaustious, unaware of your surroundings and basically making it exceptionally hard to work Efficiently. Other than that you were doing ok... But without Caution, awareness, and efficency, you don't have much in this game. Sometimes it's not the best thing to just sit and Nuke to your heart's content. It was exceptionally frustratign for me to pull because I had to wait for your MP. THe others had paced thiers out for chains to 5, and a bad link. Judging your MP decay was impossible. One fight you would stick to a regiment of spells the next you would bust out with Ancient Magic...

I give you massive credit for having all your spells. I know you have ALL of them because you used ALL of them lol.

Just take it down a notch. It's good to pace yourself.
Know your mob too. When your High level thunder is doing 150 Damage to a Torama and your High level Stone is doing 350, and the Stone Spell costs a lot less than the thunder spell to cast, you might want to spit out the right spell for the mob.

I would party with you again if you were open to suggestion, but you didn't seem like the kind of person that would be. That however was my assumption, and I appologize for not speaking up.

And just one last thing. I kept you alive... Everyone in the group at the time wanted to just let the mob kill you so that you would learn... Or leave you silencecd when you got hate from the Torama. I personally took it as a chalenge, being that I am the Hate Traffic Controller, what better way to exercize my skills than an over zealous BLM. =] I think I did a good Job.
