So, I was sitting in game, bored...and I thought to myself...

What other than WAR would be a good sub for MNK?

SAM popped into my head.

MNK/SAM

If nothing, it sounds cool. What's your opinion on this combo?

sadistic amount of power and tp in a mnk/sam... if i was going for a DD not a second voke i would definately take this combo, 's badass. you could try /drk, dunno about that though... boost souleater last resort anto a monks attack could hurt... but i dunno if they stack with all the wicked mnk multi-hitting combos..

The most accepted combos for monk are:

/war
/thf
/sam

I haven't unlocked Sam but from what I have read post 60 Sam is a decent sub for increased TP gain for weapon skill damage...

Ooh, neat. See, I was thinking of how fast I gain TP as MNK, and thinking that with /sam I'd be a bloody TP MONSTER, even more so than a Samurai...It was just a thought really. I might give it a try if it takes me 90 weeks to level MNK again...

Monks own so much, i dunno why nobody ever seems to play them... or people discredit their value... a galka or elvaan monk can reduce most anything to a small pile of bone dust and a bloodstain on the floor in a matter of minutes, they have good acc, their gear turns them into a permanent hundred fists at 75 with haste on them... and the damage is on par with a blm... they rack up tp like nobodies business and with a sam sub (never seen used) they could throw ws's off like there's no tomorrow... which there wouldn't be if a mnk decided to puch the concept of tomorrow. if there's anything i trust to get the hate back off me if something goes wrong, raging fists is it.

I have a wierd subbing question. I KNOW Im gonna probably get flamed for even suggesting this, but why dont people sub Drg? Seems that at 60+ you would get ACC bonus that people pay MILLIONS for.

Monk/Sam is a good combination. A Monk I know was going to help me do something, I forget, and he told me he had never tried Mnk/Sam. So I said that he should, so he switched his sub to Sam. I think he was 63/30. He completely owned things. Before I had a chance to even do one attack, he had probably gotten off 2 and a counter. He was ripping through mobs. Oh how I love that Monk lol

Huh, I don't know really. Mostly because we're all convinced that only the "Conventional" job combos will work? I really don't know.

I wouldn't flame you. ^^ Agian I have no experience playing a Drg but from what I have read the ACC bonus is small and you really don't get much of a str bonus from this combination as you would from other classes. People also aren't as big a fans of the Job Abilities that come with this combo. While Jump and High Jump will do some damage they supposedly don't do the damage over time (which monks are all about) that other job combos do.

This is just from what I have gleemed though.

I mean you gain Jump and High Jump but with war you get more of a Str bonus with berserk, provoke, and what else... double attack I think. Try it out though.

All just pros and cons.
There could be something good from this, but other jobs offer other things that may be more valuable in different situations, and people can just buy the acc gear and be done with it.
There's a million ways to look at it, I'm sure.
/sigh

i was thinking hte same thing myself Alanon, even though there are better subs out there, i pretty much hold the conclusion that anything with a two handed weapon would do good damage with a jump, that's why when i fool around with other jobs i like to sub drg, just to see what kind of damage i can pull ^_^b

look at all these new combos coming out... rdm/nin... nin/blm... in this game anything could be made to work by the right player.... GALKA WHM/WAR!!!

Monks ROCK in a party. My friend Mystie plays Mnk/Sam and totally loves it.

It's just not for me personally. I hated leveling that job. I was very relieved I just had to get my mnk to lvl 37 for 1 of my 4 Warrior subs. Thank God for Jaz, Svina, Phraust, Ecks and a few others or I don't think I could've done it. They truly made leveling my mnk a fun experience.

i see many monks sub ninja since they end up tanking a lot of the time from all of their dmg :p

My opinion on MNK subs. Note that this is mainly theorycraft, as I've only got a level 15 MNK.

WHM, BLM, RDM, SMN, BRD - Don't make me hurt you... Unless soloing/questing/anything not involving gaining exp, these combos should be avoided at all costs.

WAR - Berserk and Double Attack are very nice. Also, being able to Provoke in some sort of emergency is helpful.

THF - Sneak Attack and Trick Attack are the only really useful things you get from this sub. Since SA is only a normal critical hit on a THF sub, and TA doesn't add any damage, I don't think it would add as much damage as a WAR or SAM sub.

PLD - No idea why anyone would ever want this in an exp party...

DRK - Several Attack Bonus traits and Souleater at level 60 make this sub somewhat useful. Not sure how Souleater works on a sub, but if it still works similar to how it works with DRK main, having it turned on with a MNK's high attack speed would mean an insane ammount of damage dealt very quickly. Unfortunately, this also means the MNK nearly dies from lost HP and gains a ton of hate, so it's only good if the mob's near death already.

BST - I suppose this could be useful, if you party near EM or weaker mobs, and have a lot of +CHR stuff, but I'd recommend against it...

RNG - MNK can't use much for ranged weapons, so subbing something that focuses only on ranged weapons would be somewhat pointless.

SAM - As others have said, after level 60 this is good for two Store TP traits and Meditate. Before 60, however, there's not much to get from subbing SAM.

NIN - Ninjutsu is the only thing you really gain from NIN subjob, as I don't believe the dual weild traits work for H2H weapons (I could be wrong). If you have hate issues, it might be worthwhile, but otherwise I'd avoid it.

DRG - A DRG's main point is the wyvern, and you can't use that with a DRG subjob. Jumps and an Accuracy Bonus trait are all you get from DRG sub, and I don't think that matches up to what other jobs give.

So, overall, I say only SAM, WAR, and maybe THF would be good subs for MNK.

it's a simple choice, sub ranger and throw pebbles...
