So I held the vBulletin style design contest at sitepoint, and ..., well ...., not a whole lot came out of it.

Have a look http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?t=357090&page=2

The question is, is the final entry by bearbrick acceptable as new QCDN style or not?

The guy put in a lot of effort, so I feel like he certainly earned a reward, though I could end the contest and not declare a winner, in which case we will be "stuck" with the current Nightshade design.

Thoughts?

I really liked the earth-tones Sculli. Especially with the FF8-summon in front of the map. ^^

I liked the first one and second one he did. I'm more of a darker color fan as it makes reading easier for me if my surroundings aren't very bright. I also like the styles he had them in. Just me though.

I really like the third one he posted before he started using the earth tones. i really like dark colors that aren't to flashing but really catch the eye.

I really liked his first two. I thought the first two top graphics were very good and mixed well with the color scheme. I don't care for the earth color scheme. Main concern though, is it fixed or free flowing? I would take an ugly free flowing over a pretty fixed anyday. Useability & readability advantages of free flowing are important.

Edit: After all the work he put in and how polite he was of constructive criticism, it would be very rude to not provide some kind of reward, even if it wasn't the full $250.

I really like the last one with the FF8 summon. :)

I'm definately not a big fan of the font he uses for the name. The earthtones are allright but I like the first two submissions a bit more. I'm just not feeling the Newspaper image that something with "Daily News" should have. I would think the best possible would be earth tones, such as weathered parchment like the maps are but with an old english font and the FFXI crystal behind the text. Just some creative ideas I've had but I'm not good enough to make a whole theme.

According to bearbrick's PM he sent me his earth tone designs are free flowing. By the looks of the blue/black scheme it is fixed, though that can probably be adjusted.

If I declare him the winner then he will get the $250, I can end it without a winner and just send him like $50 or $75 or so for the effort even though we won't be using his design.

It's unfortunate that ConceptShock submitted an early design but was never heard of again. I tried to contact him by PM as well, no luck. Personally I liked his design best, through it was fixed width if I remember that correctly.

Personally, I liked all of bearbrick's entries.

Snazzy.

I think the earth colors are supposed to represent a ToAU themed style as a the ToAU web site itself sort of has these colors.

He got the theme right...but the earth tones still isn't a pleasent color for a forum. Its not bright at least, but its just not a comfurtable color is the best way I can put it.

If he could make the first theme free flowing, that would be really nice.

I think the earth colour would suit the forum pretty wel, though the category header and the forum-description bar could do with a colour change. The dark blue doesn't suit the theme, IMHO.

If this contest is still open, I could pass the URL to a few pros I know who might take a shot at it. Hell, I'd even take a shot at it if I had any motivation to get back into skinning. :/

He is very good I have to say. I like all of his entries <.<;

fuckin a just gimme a black and white layout. seriously. who the hell cares if there are sword icons on your board topic. shit whatever happened to modernism and minimalism.

The last one is nice, I like it with the FF8 image and all ^^

Oh my, I really like the most recent update of the Earth toned ones. Mayhaps you could also check out getting that blue one and seeing if it is possible to set these as user options.

Looking good ^_^

I can leave it open for a few more days, do keep in mind that at this point entries that are also coded for vBulletin would be preferred unless they just happen to be outstanding design in which case I may find someone else to code it.

It's very 80's and just not popular anymore.

Multiple styles are difficult to maintain as a lot of useful and needed vBulletin modifications have to be done to the style templates. If the templates are functionally the same though, I could talk myself into maintaining two different ones, maybe ...

I like the last one the best. Not a huge fan of the color theme, but the the header looks really good. Is it possible to change the colors a bit to a bit more pleasing tones? That khaki green and other green combined together is like a bad hangover.
