Sub Jobs and YOU!

I only really get use out of it at HNMs and other things where I start with full mp to get and extra haste of and save mp. I still macro it in for bar spells even if it is the tiniest bit better. I'm not really worried about my mp e-peen or I would wear it full time instead of when usfull. You are the one getting upset about an elvaan having more mp. I was just stating who that could be gotten easily with no really rare items. Thats the last Ill say on this because we are both just repeating ourselves.
I'm not upset in the slightest, I knew the only way that an elvaan could have more mp than me was to wear gear with the most +mp possible or to be including food and I was right. Maxing out your mp is useless aside from bragging rights, which is why I don't have some of those +mp gears that you're using; if I did then my mp would still trump yours from the racial difference.

I macro it for Stoneskin too, but aside from that and MaxMP then I agree on it's uselessness.
Errant is better for stoneskin and you should already have one anyways.

It's a great filler if you can't afford Noble's, but if you have the latter then Briault is just accessory. LS mate was selling one cheap a while back so I jumped on it.
Yeah, it's definitely a good body piece if you don't have a noble's/cleric's, but once you get one of those there's almost no reason for it.

Edit: Nvm I'm an idiot <_<;

Thanks, didn't know there was a cap to be honest.

I'll get my exact number tonight, not that it matters all that much. If only to confirm or dethrone my claim of near-1200. I'm pretty sure its 1180s.

What do mithra have naked? Well... like how much mp do they have naked. I think as whm/blm I have... low- to mid-500s.

My understanding from way back when (not that I've bothered testing this) is that Briault's effect on enhancing barspells is in line with the merit upgrades to them - namely, you get a bit of guaranteed damage reduction (a la Shell or MDB). Though I think unlike merits, Briault doesn't also affect the elemental resistance number itself.

This would be easy enough to test in Ballista with a BLM friend.

EDIT: MDB +5 per wiki. http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Blessed_Briault

I have 796 Mp naked. And I made a mistake about the mp cap on Blessed body. I kept changing it for Noble's and didn't take into account the Mp on Noble's.

Intriguing, so in theory Briault gives a form of elemental Phalanx?

I have 6 titties naked. And I made a mistake about the mp cap on Blessed body. I kept changing it for Noble's and didn't take into account the Mp on Noble's.
Still, 796 base with the max mp gear I could think of off the top of my head (excluding Zenith+1 and Briault+1)... Mithra can almost hit 1500mp. I calc'd 1470.18.

Screw you cats and your 6 titties.

I have 692 mp naked with /blm and 4 mp merits. No clue how Myrrh has so much more unless it's /smn with more mp merits.

/Smn with only 2 Mp Merits.

Edit: Forgot I had a Marron Glace up too.

Similar but not quite the same ...

Phalanx reduces damage (of all types) by subtracting a flat-rate constant, meaning if damage was low enough to begin with, Phalanx can zero it out, and Phalanx shines most on taking a lot of small (usually physical) hits. It adds up on bigger hits just as much, of course, it's just that the constant number isn't as big a percentage of the bigger hit, as it is of the smaller hit.

Shell and MDB (and by extension, Briault's and Barspell merits' help with barspells) reduce (magical) damage by decreasing it by a percentage. So they won't ever get it down to zero damage on their own, and it's more of a damage reduction the more damage there was in the first place. So they shine most when taking big hits from spells (hopefully a small number of them of course).

Both of the above are guaranteed effects, whereas elemental resistance in general is more of a chance of, well, a resist (better chance the higher your resistance is, of course). And for most attacks you need a *ton* of resistance (beefy barspell *and* carol *and* lots of resist gear) in order to see the resist rate become appreciable. However, for some attacks, their magic accuracy is low enough to begin with that a barspell alone can make an appreciable difference.

There are 4 ways of reducing magical damage:

1. INT (Or MND for white magic) - dINT is one of the first steps in magic damage calculation, increasing your INT will reduce the value of dINT, reducing (though only by a small amount) the magic damage taken.

2. -% magic damage - This is shell and gear that states -% m. dmg. Self explanatory, and caps at -50%. (In truth it is #/256, which is rounded to the nearest % stated on the gear) Shellra V.2 + Aegis will cap this.

3. MDB - Another stage in the magic damage calculation, your opponent's MAB is divided by your MDB, which is multiplied by the base damage. The 5% from briault will give almost a 0.95 multiplier to magic of that element. MDB does not cap, but as it is a divisor, it has diminishing returns.

4. Resists - What you get from barspells, can be 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 or 1/16 of normal damage.

All four are always applied to spells, but may not be for JAs/tp abilities (As I understand, Mijin Gakure is affected by -% dmg, but not MDB).

Back to lurking...

It's about 300mp over the regular casting swap, but honestly MaxMP has limited real use. It`s nice to have the extra free overhead mp, but look at the lack of haste gear. In those pickle situations where you need to crank out 4+ Haste casts in under a minute so you can rest and ride the timer out, this swap is useless.

Cmdrs got about 20mp on me, but I got 200hp on him. Rawr...

As far as WHM gear goes, I can see having (aside from specific slots that just get swapped situationally, such as Noble's for cures and Cleric's for regens):

- A resting set consisting primarily of hMP (and Auto-Refresh in Yigit's case) and enough +MP otherwise to get close to, if not equal or greater than, the standing set.
- A standing set (which may have more max MP than the above) consisting of various nice things you want while standing and doing stuff, such as Auto-Refresh, -enmity, decreased casting time, etc. Plus macroable stuff like +haste and +potency and +skill and whatnot.

Rest and put on the resting set, swap to standing set on your last tick(s) of resting to get any extra MP the standing set has, stand, and proceed while wearing standing set until you rest.

The dilemma of adding a max MP set into the mix is that it's only ever used between standing and when you actually go to the standing set. And you have to spend that MP in such a way that you wouldn't have cause to swap any of it out in the process (for example, if it includes Briault, you can't use a cure or a regen or any resistable enfeeble ...). This considerably cuts down on its usefulness.

How a flame on the subjobs of melee in a 64-65 party turned into a discussion on max mp eludes me...all it took was a Galka whm comment to spur this debate I guess lol

Gimp sub :p

Quieren loaned me his -HP/+MP gear once as a joke. I put it on, screamed "You're trying to kill me!" and gave it back.
