Swine flu

There are 13 verified cases in SC now. Newberry county completely shut down it's schools and one high school in Greenville has been shut down. I think there are around 60 cases that are suspected to be Swine Flu. Doctors are urging people in those areas not to go to the hospital or doctor unless they really think that they have it so they won't risk exposure.

Huh. I was born in Greenville.

I'm getting somewhat irritated with the media groups who keep bringing up that there was a death in the United States.

Yes, there was. A Mexican toddler was brought to the United States in hopes of saving her life, but tragically it was too late.

It's not quite the same thing as implying that someone who had access to, pardon the expression, first world medical facilities died to the disease.

At Mauldin High School in Greenville there are 17 students who have flu-like symptoms after returning from a field trip to Walt Disney World. To be extra safe they closed the whole school down.

I am irritated with the media too but you know they just want to increase people's interest in what they're saying. It is definitely a shame that the child died but unfortunately it gets people paranoid that they have it and will die. My brother-in-law, who smokes cigarettes, was coughing yesterday and went to the doctor because of it. I don't think that he even had a cold.

I'm not surprised, but it's rapidly reaching the point where I almost wish there were laws against scare-mongering.

In fairness, this man goes to the hospital when he stubs his toe

Shit, that'll be the day. The concept of a state of fear didn't originate from a (very good) Michael Crichton novel.

I wonder if the Mexico section at Epcot is having a decline in visitors :D

this is going to destroy mexican tourism like nothing else. poor mexico/mexicans :(

This is why man was not meant to make love to pig. They need to stick to their beloved donkey show pasttime.

You mean their cheque right? Unless they were waiting on some kind of review or test.

You're an ass btw Deja, I have been waking each day coughing and coughing quite a bit at work. It's a smokers cough, my lungs are telling me to give it up finally.

My entire work is on some kind of prevention action. They ordered a fucking truck load of antibacterial jell hand sanitiser... I use that stuff all they time as it is at work because I'm always handling filthy paperwork.

That's because you work in the GTA that is still recovering from the horror that was SARS lol.

Here's an idea for the world:

People - don't go to Mexico.

People who have been to Mexico - Stay home until you know you're not sick to prevent others from catching the sniffles.

Hey here's an Idea... SWINESTOCK!! Hells yea! >.> Maybe we'll get Supertramp or Cheap Trick lol

Actually I'm in Oakville now, not quite considered the general GTA. =) It's the rich peoples city lol.

***Not to offend anyone*** totally off topic

People who understand where I live will get it.

A Guy at work inquired whether I lived in the Hamilton area, because that's where majority of my co-workers commute from and they enjoy the bar life together quite regularly, it was a subtle invite. I told him I was in Brampton, and he just looked at me somewhat puzzled and said "but you're white?". He didn't mean anything insulting by it, not racial even, just pointing out the hard fact that Brampton is quickly 'chasing' (for lack of a better term) the Caucasians out.

I grew up here, and as much as I hate the city, I love it just the same.

idk how crazy people in the USA have gotten over swine flu but the authorities going crazy over any case of the flu is kinda reasonable. you have a highly mutagenic and contagious virus which HAS killed millions before from a stray mutation that just happens to be immune to vaccines and probably whatever medication you concoct to fight it within months.
Going batshit insane when a new strain comes out and kills a person is the smart thing to do. you can see if it's dangerous later instead of waiting for half the planet to be in danger. It's also possible for it to mutate into a more deadly version so the lower the chance of mutation(via preventing possible infections) the better.

Preventing infections = good idea

Panicking beyond the point of reason, spurring masses into a craze where they clog up emergency rooms because they feel a little sick (but not to the point where they actually need medical attention, as most cases are mild and recoverable at home), or have eaten pork in the last week .... bad idea.

sounds like general stupidity from the people clogging medical rooms in that case. granted the people in charge should realize people can/will act stupid in general.
Your usual doctor can do the same thing, will welcome the extra revenue, and probably wont charge you out the ass nearly as badly.

It's mostly the media 'coverage' and exposure that riles the populace into panic mode.

There's a large portion of the general populace that don't buy into it, perfect example, some of the peeps in the thread.

I wouldn't go as far as to call the people that are a bit panicked stupid. Maybe a bit irrational, easily swayed.. that's not to say it's stupidity that drives them to make the decision to see the doctor. It's a pretty rational decision. People over-react, and when you're not a doctor and think you show symptoms, as minor as they may be.. people panic. It's pretty natural actually.

Media is a bad drug enhancing peoples already worried state.
