Swoopo, or How To Scam Idiots and Turn a Massive Profit

I just found this fucking hilariously hilarious.

I checked out a camera auction with 10 seconds left and noticed this

This auction will end latest on
Nov-02-2008 at 10:15 PDT

Atleast theres an ending date lmao

I dont understand the 100% off auction. What is the dis-incentive for bidding on an item that doesn't cost anything? They are just bidding to get it for free? People will do that ad-nauseum until someone is sick and tired of counter bidding. Its so stupid, but I can't believe people will do it.

You don't pay the FINAL PRICE. You still pay for all your bids. Oh, and shipping/processing.

I love how its termed entertainment shopping at the top of the page.

I don't think it can be considered illegal though. The rules very specifically tell you how it works, and even the ending auction pages show your actual cost after taking your number of bids into account. They aren't hiding anything. The only thing I could possibly see a case built on is trying to call the site a gambling site but even that I don't think would work.

It may not be illegal but to me it feels illegal. Like, let me take your gambling theory and run with it a bit. The only way I can explain this is gambling addiction would be the coercion process of the crime extortion. Thought it doesn't involve physical pain or psychological distress, though to gamblin' addicts it would but that's really their fault, it's heavy manipulation therefore subtle coercion which is a crime. Though, technically, Swoopo could get away with it if they're in a legal gambling area or outside of the United States.

I guess it's also worth notin' that coercion can also be a non crime related issue as well. Things such as sweet-talking, seduction, begging, etc. I feel though, that if you're coercion leads to others extreme misfortune, i.e. payin' $4k for a $1.5k laptop, it's a crime.

I was almost drunk enough to try my luck, but after watching 10+ auctions I realized that I would get frustrated enough to put a gun to my head and pull the trigger.

(this post took me 5 minutes to post legibly... go alcohol)
