Because of adding together so many 1000's people forget that all the smaller numbers only add up to 100 yet think they add up to 1000 therefore making the total 5000. It was on a show called Brainiac here in England about a year or so back. I got 5000 first time, it didnt get me this time though.

I noticed that as I did this math in my head I was grouping the numbers.
For example:
1000 + 20 = 1020
In my mind, it would read ten twenty. I would imagine the mistake in carrying that last addition makes you want to bump up the first group a whole increment, because of the pattern in doing so throughout the problem.
My guess, its just a trick of patterns and organized thinking.
