I'm pretty one-sided on this discussion - I'm gonna say though, due to a wider range of monsters, PLD is probably a SLIGHTLY (making it the best, IMO..) tank - they take the least damage, and can heal themself. NIN is awesome vs stuff that does way too much damage, but they can't do too great vs stuff that has AOE or 100% doubleattack (Mandragora, primarily)
WAR are great at dealing so much damage they keep hate, but they have relatively good defense, plus NIN sub suits them well, which makes them, daresay, like a NIN with high def/better weapon range, though weaker Ninjutsu
(if it's not obvious, I don't party with WAR-tanks enough to give good opinion of em...but I still think they're good..)

Veteran to be fair your highest job is a Paladin. How many other tanks have you partied with at post 30? In fact, all of you posting that WAR is a shit tank at higher level, how many of you have actually tried it? I have and I have been constantly impressed. Even without a Thf a war tank can hold hate on the whitemage easily, while still generating almost as much damage as a regular DD. No other tank can offer that. If you have a stready supply of MPs coming in from a decent WHM and RDM you can make high chains.

WAR as straight DD is where they are lacking. They can be a top tier tank or a bottom tier damage dealer, that's just how it is. To understand why I believe this I'll simply use the same logic I did to come to my conclusion about SMN.

Imagine the highest exp/hour party possible with WAR as a damage dealer. Then ask yourself if it was someone besides a WAR in the Pt if the exp/hour would be greater. If the answer is yes, and it obviously is, then we can come to two conclusions.

1. WAR is an inferious job and therefore no one should even bother playing them til squaresoft fixed them.
2. WAR is actually a balanced job but as a straight DD is being played incorrectly.

I chose 2, and it seems to work out pretty well, cause I'll be damned if with the right setup for some parties war/nin isn't the BEST TANK! I do think however for this to be true they must be a very serious WAR and spend lots of gil and have the correct subjob.
 
I am not saying that WAR/NIN is a bad tank at high levels. I'm saying that WAR/MNK is a bad tank at high levels. The OP is trying to argue that WAR/MNK is the best tank from 1-75, not just WAR in general--WAR/MNK.

P.S. I've seen WAR/NINs in parties of mine doing Rampage for ungodly damage, and also getting pretty sweet DOT as well. Sure, with dual-wield axes they will need to face low DEF mobs, but then if it's a high DEF mob they can grab a THF sub and go to town with a two-handed axe, right?
 
ok i use that macro because i think of it this war provoke 15 seconds later boost 15 seconds later boost then bam provoke again i am not
dissing defender and dodge


i usually start that macro i stated and start my other macro defender then dodge

can u please tell me what u mean by top notch gear please
 
God this thread was a pain to read.

Micah, I leveled as a War/Mnk tank to level 51.

At level 50, you stop being effective, because you suck up so much MP from the White Mages, and Red Mages in your party, that they have to rest after EVERY SINGLE FIGHT. Which completely eliminates skillchains.

Paladins and War/Nins keep the fights moving along faster and more smoothly, because they do not use all of the White Mages MP in ONE FIGHT.

Nobody is saying that you cannot try and level War/Mnk to 75. We are saying that you will have a VERY VERY hard time with it.

I still level War/Mnk myself, but not as a tank. War/Mnk makes a very fomidable Damage Dealer, but as a tank, it falls very short.

Micah2424, you clearly do not want to hear anyone’s opinion, you are simply tiring to justly the combo to your self. It has been pointed out to you several times very clearly that WAR/MNK can tank, but that it is not very efficient. You also do not understand how tanking works, which has also been explained and you have ignored.

If you want to play the combo that is fine and up to you, it is your character not mine, but when I put together a party, it’s my party, not yours.

WAR/MNK is a tank that lower his defend to do more damage, so they are good for party that dont got big damage jobs.
PLD/WAR is a tank that have HIGH defend with low damage, their main point in party is to keep the monster away from other member, so they are good for party that got lot of DDs like blm and rng.
NIN/WAR is a tank that dont take much hits, so they save healer's mp more, so they are good for party that dont got more than one job that can heal. And do to their hate control, they will do better with a thf in party or a party that dont got many huge dds, blm and rng or other job i didnt mention.

yes war/mnk will work but there not many around, which mean it is most likely to be pain to get them higher lvl. As you take about counter, i used war/mnk to 30 as tank, yes counter is real nice. i counter mandy's double attack before, which mean i counter him to time in a row :P. that is nice, and you can use that to gain more hates. WAR/MNK is a all-round tank that can do damage or take hits depend on what happen.

i am trying pld/war as an elvann female and i am kinda having a hard time seeing the chains because i do not have alot of mp but hopefully by level 20 or 30 that will change

i know i was a bit argumentive and i am sorry

it is just if u ask me war/mnk has good hate tools but that is only if u ask me

Just use MP gear hun. As an Elvaan PLD/WAR I wear Energy earrings, a Silver Hairpin, and I have astral Rings to switch out with my Vit Rings. Every time I use Cure II twice, I just switch to my vit rings with a macro. This is similar to what I do with BLM/WHM as an Elvaan. Don't worry, 14PLD isn't very different than WAR, but just wait until you get higher level, things get more fun, and different.

To top it off, this sore excuse for a human then fucking gets aggro on her sorry ass, then fucking dies, and just says "bye" and disbands the party.

I realize I'm in the wrong if you WERENT Shizia, becuase i would have been swearing at you out of line. I'm not Roofie, dont think i'll keep making the problem worse because "you dont care." Fact is, I was wrong for assuming you were Shizia, I swear to God i thot i put "and if you arent Shizia, please ignore this post."
