I haven't enjoyed a game this much in a long time. I bought the Orange Box just to play Portal, which was a ton of fun, but was way too short. So I finally got around to playing TF2 a few days later and now I absolutely love this game.

I'm still a hardcore Quake 3 player (still play it all the time), and this is honestly the first fps I've really enjoyed since Q3 and the original UT were released. I was completely expecting this game to be garbage and was very critical of the cartoony graphics, but after playing it, the graphics and sounds work amazingly well with each other, and the team based gameplay is top notch. It doesn't have a huge learning curve, and you can just jump in, play a quick game, and quit.

It's great.

If it wasn't for Call of Duty 4 coming, I'd go ahead and coin TF2 the best FPS release of the year. It's a wonderful game and the class system takes out a lot of the monotony that often comes with FPS games. Love the cartoon graphics as well and wish more games with the likes would come out.

Just bought it yesterday. Can't wait to play it.

If you liked the Portal gun, read up on how to mod it into HL2. I was gonna buy TOB for X360 so I could play TF2 online, but after seeing the Portal gun in HL2 my platform decision was instantly swayed that way.

I'm liking TF2, although I haven't logged a lot of time with it yet. I've never been a big fan of online multiplayer fragfests, but this one is winning me over with the class system. It definitely adds to the mix because if you get bored playing one way, you can change classes and play another.

I've really only spent quality time with the medic so far. There's something fun (and WHM-friendly, ha-ha) about being a healer who can make a team member invulnerable to damage for a few seconds. One group I was in managed to win because I popped off that ability and allowed us to run through the defenses and take the control point.

I'll get around to the other jobs eventually, I'm sure.

Just a real quick question: what's the lag like? I used to get absolutely horrific lag in CS:S, and also in DoD:S (albeit nowhere near as bad as in CS).

That simple reason is the only thing that's prevented me from getting any Valve games since Half-Life 2.

The lag varies really. Its usually been non-existent, but every now and then you get someone on like a 56k connection that totally messes up the whole room and is promptly booted. Lag isn't even that bad with a full 16 people, i like this game even more than H3 sometimes, and i love me some H3.

Yeah, the lag in CS:S is even essentially non-existent now, and I generally only get it on those 48-man servers.

Thanks for the info, I may look into this for Christmas :)

I can't play TF2 because my PC sucks at playing online First person shooters ;_;

However, Portal is awesome fun. It's probably something like a beta for something we may see in HL2: E3 imho.

I've played some full 24-player games and there was no lag whatsoever. I think the highest ping of all the players was like 80ish or something.

On a side note, I need to stop buying games for a long time. Still have two PS2 RPGs to beat (Persona3/WildArms5), Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Orange Box to play, and now I just bought a 360, so I got Forza2/Ultimate Alliance/Guitar Hero 3...

It's not really a mod for HL2, it's more like importing all the HL2 maps and stuff into portal. Or so I'm told.

I got Portal off of steam on it's own (don't really care for HL2 or TF2).
It's a pretty badass game, but I can't get past room 18 because every time I try to look down for some reason I get the "OS Paged Pool Memory low" error.
I've tried all those fixes posted on the internet(messing with the registry and virtual memory, but none of them seem to be working.
Ah well, guess my computer just hates me ><

Another thing that I've tested. Is make sure your steam connection speed matches your actual speed. I tested and put dial up as my speed though I had FiOS and it put me at 300 ping. So match the speeds and you should be all right, if you already have done that, then i would find servers closer to you using filters and if that fails, make sure your rates are normal

In console "~" key.

"cl_cmdrate 101"
"cl_updaterate 101"
"rate 30000"

those are default rates for the games and auto adjust according to the tic of the servers.

OT: Portal was amazing, though agreed, way too short. I'm not a TF2 fan because of play style. CS:S handles well for me so I'll be sticking with it. Portal was worth the price of the orange box though.
