I get DC...alot...

Its a combo between my crappy POS ISP and maybe my router. (Linksys). I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this (if there is something to fix)

I've heard of opening ports and all of that...but I don't have a clue how to get to the place to be able to open them ><

*I don't know a lot about this kind of stuff ; ;*

thanks (¯‘.¯;)

PC or PS2?
If PC, are you using Windows XP?
Are you running any kind of Firewall Software on the PC (Including the XP Firewall).
Anything else connected to the router?
Do you have a problem doing anything else on the Internet such as downloading a large file?
When it happens, do you see it coming (Such as Lag, or your “R” dropping to 0) or all of a sudden Disconnect.
What firmware version are you running on your linksys.
Is this a Wireless Product?

Opening ports is only needed if your Firewall is blocking outbound ports. The linksys does not block anything outbound. The game does not use any kind of inbound ports that require port forwarding (At least not on the PS2).

PC
1 or 2 other comps connected to Router
not wireless router
XP firewall isnt running
No other firewall things
R drops to 0 over a period of time then drops me
I can do everything else on internet fine. DL big files is no problem
Firmware version I don't know =/

we had problems with our Linksys droping packets before as well. We pretty much tried everything like opening ports and such and still never really got it to 100%. He eneded up tossing the Linksys and using the Microsoft router. No problems since then. I hope you have better luck than we did

The default MTU on Linksys routers is 1492, even though the setup screen may say 1500. Most of the time that MTU is too high.

Try >ping -f -l 1492 www.yahoo.com

The '-f' means that the packet won't be fragmented. Start lowering the MTU in your ping until you get 100% return on an unfragmented packet. Then set your router to that MTU, this is likely going to fix your issue.

At some point someone must have set up your router, set things like how to connect to your ISP and such. On one of the router setup pages there is a setting called MTU, and chances are it is currently set to AUTO.

Open a command line window (Start->Run->just type in 'cmd' w/o the '

Then in that command line type

ping -f -l 1492 www.yahoo.com

Chances are you will get a message like this:

Code:
Pinging [url]www.yahoo.akadns.net[/url] [66.94.230.44] with 1492 bytes of data:

Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.
Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.
Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.
Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.

Ping statistics for 66.94.230.44:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

Continue to lower the numeric value in your ping command, i.e.:

ping -f -l 1490 www.yahoo.com

until you get something that looks like this:

Code:
Pinging [url]www.yahoo.akadns.net[/url] [66.94.230.32] with 1472 bytes of data:

Reply from 66.94.230.32: bytes=1472 time=70ms TTL=51
Reply from 66.94.230.32: bytes=1472 time=65ms TTL=50
Reply from 66.94.230.32: bytes=1472 time=69ms TTL=50
Reply from 66.94.230.32: bytes=1472 time=65ms TTL=51

Ping statistics for 66.94.230.32:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 65ms, Maximum = 70ms, Average = 67ms

Then, in your router setup, change the MTU setting from auto to 1472 (in my case), your number may be different.

router setup is from the disc in the box or an online thing?

thanks sculli, I have the 0% loss with your number as well ^^

*edit* Found it, changed from Auto to Manual: Size 1472.

hope it works.

thanks a BUNCH Sculli :D

best way to test to see if its the router is to just take it out of the picture. completely take it out and hook the pc up to the modem. if it doesnt happen again then further investigate the router.
if it keeps dc'ing without the router, then its not a bad idea to do a ping as sculli mentioned. then that will tell u if its your pc or if its a bad conn

either way work. without going into something that may confuse you, disconnecting the router is gonna be the easiest

MTU issue still applies though. Windows has some default MTU and allows for fragmented packets, so if whatever packet size you have is too large for the ISP you have, then you get fragmented packets that can (don't have to, but can) seriously affect your connectivity for applications such as online games.

I think it has to do with the router.

I get the same thing with my Linksys Router. Maybe it happenes once every 2 days on average, so it dosn't really drive me up the wall.

From my exsperiences with the the R-0, it seems more likely to happen if your in the middle of downloading something and playing at the same time. When i'm at my brothers place, i have the router connected to his cable modem and we boath play FFXI simutaniously on a PC and PS2.

Meanwhile back at my place, i put a peice of shite router that wirelessly communicates with the PC upstairs now it is not recommended that the router be so far from the reciever, but it works fine, up until i play FFXI on my PC, it lasts for awhile then it totally crashes.
Just like the Linksys, it runs at an impressive 2.4 GHZ Frequency. meaning that signal gets sent further than you probably imagine it.

Reason why i'm talking about the wireless aspect is because most Linksys routers these days, have the wireless feature. And i'm assuming without clearity that your Router is also a wireless router. So try this..

-Un-install and re-install the software from the CD in which the router came with.

- When installation is complete look into further details about encrypting the routers signal. And actually get the job done.

All one needs on his laptop is a wireless PCI card, that will allow them access this feild of internet your router is projecting around your home. And i tell you i seen 800Mhz do 200+ Meters without loosing quality.

NOTE =It's not possible to inspect files that are not activly being transmitted through the airwaves on these routers, but do keep in mind that your Bandwith can be used by outsiders that may be anywhere alog the row of homes in your area more than once, to a point where your FFXI gets more R-0's than you can handle.

So try the 2 steps if your router is what i assume it be, and when your done let us know how it runs.[/b]

I have a linksys router , Three people use it at the same time for FFXI 2pc's and 1 ps2 almost every night .. We have yet to be dropped..(knocks on wood).

I have a friend who got d/c'd all the time he turns off the Norton now when he plays and hasn't had problems since , maybe you have some additional program running in the back that is lagging you to D/C? just a suggestion. Hope you work this out {take care}
getting d/c'd would drive me nuts too.

Only progs I run are FRAPS and occassionally Musicmatch Jukebox, but I d/c regardless of Jukebox running. No other progs =/

Also on the linksys routers (at least the one that I have) you can restrict access to certain MAC addresses. I have mine restricted to only the two MAC addresses of the two upstairs computers' wireless adapters. I'm also using encryption. I'm not *SURE* that this is foolproof but that might help with the problem of people leeching off of your router signal.

Also, with the disconnection issues I'm having a lot of the same problem. I'll play for a while and my R drops to 0, bounces back up, drops to 0, bounces back up, etc. If i constantly equip and un-equip an item it keeps FFXI receiving but only for a while. The issue usually resolves itself after about 5-10 minutes and is fine again. Restarting playonline or logging out and in or even restarting the computer doesn't fix the problem. Nothing does until that 5-10 minutes is over. (Short of restarting the router and cable modem) I was wondering if maybe the router has to perform some kind of action after X amount of time has passed that is causing this. Something that would take 5-10 minutes. I'm not too familiar with how routers operate but this is just a guess.

Another issue that I've had (Sudden disconnect that kicks me from POL and makes me have to reconnect) is caused by running a P2P program on another computer. To be specific I was running Shareaza (a spyware free version of kazaa that uses the gnutella network) on the other wireless computer in my room and I always connect to FFXI from a wireless connection on my main computer in my room.
BTW, my signal quality = 97-100% always and the connection strength is always 80-100% (usually 100% but sometimes lower).

Phew. OK my fingers hurt from typing but hopefully some of this info will help some tech-head discover the problem and save me from disconnection deaths. If you read this far then kudos.
