I don't play FF anymore, and haven't for awhile. I've no intention to return; the only thing left for me would be end-game and the few months that I participated in that type of activity was not enjoyable. I mainly lurk on a few private forums because I have a few friends that still play and post. Lately, I have been feeling a bit nostalgic though. Mostly I reminisce about THF (largely soloing). If you have a good story about doing something fun with your THF job, I'd love to hear about it. It doesn't have to be amazing, just interesting and well told.

I'll start this off. I was a decent player with good gear, but I certainly wouldn't classify my character as "elite." Still, as long as you don't expect to hear a tale for the ages you may still find it entertaining.

I had a quest for the Den of Rancor flagged for the longest time. It was the one where you had to carry 4 flames of rancor to a room, light 4 torches and then kill the NM bomb that spawns. I forget the exact name, but was practically useless, so there wasn't much hope of finishing it other than dragging a few friends along to help. Still, I didn't want to waste my friends' time just to clear a BS quest.

By the time I got my THF to lv 75, I'd gotten pretty adept at soloing with it. After all, that's where a good number of the levels had come from. The wiki said that the NM bomb was soloable by "some jobs" and although thf/nin wasn't specifically mentioned it seemed as likely a winner as ninja for the task. I got a warp scroll and headed for the Den.

Getting into the Den of Rancor is a simple matter for almost any lv 75 job, and I already had the paintbrush and the unlit lantern. Still, I decided that my first order of business would be to get the map. Silent oils and tonko made it easy to wander around until I found a chest; I found one in less than 20 minutes, so I considered myself lucky.

The chest was tucked away into a blind alley, a cul-du-sac if you will. I had my thieves' tools ready, and was prepared to fight a mimic if I should fail to pick the lock. I just wanted to be slick and avoid useless fighting if I could; so, I tried to wait for the right time to drop invis and open the chest. Unfortunately, FF 11 had other plans for the occasion. There was a bat, a tonberry melee type and a tonberry blm hovering around the area. When sneak started to wear off and the bat wasn't moving, I had to back into a corner and try to re-apply some silent oil. The instant I dropped sneak, the bat decides to finally move, and of course comes my way. Annoying, but no problem; it's only EP and easily soloed.

I had barely gotten a few hits on the bat when I see the combat log say, "The tonberry <whatever> (it's been a long time and I don't recall all the mob names) begins casting thundaga." Awesome. Thankfully, I have a macro for links that is essentially: /equip ammo "sleep bolt" and /ra <stnpc>. *Pop*, a hit before the spell goes off, and it's asleep for now. After just a few seconds, the bat has just a sliver of life left but a tonberry melee-type mob has linked with the sleeping mage and joined the fun. The bat dies, and now I start in on the melee. I auto-attack the melee tonberry and periodically pop the tonberry blm with sleep bolts. After the bat, I had enough TP to use DE on the melee tonberry. That almost wipes him out, but he has a final F-U for me. I can normally get away from throat stab, but I was literally in a corner... so not this time. BAM, and I'm at about 100-something HP. That bastard tonberry dies an instant later.

One -ga spell will now wipe me out, shadows or no; so my adrenaline gets going when I see another -ga spell being cast. However, my tonberry mage is still asleep. It's the new one standing right next to the first that is casting. *Pop*, sleep bolt that one. I can't risk a -ga spell going off, but I really don't want to run through the Den with under 200 hp and two tonberries soon to be giving chase. So, I keep alternating sleep bolts on the mages. Once I have 100 TP, I begin to melee the first blm. Almost immediately, he starts to cast a -ga spell, so I blast him with a DE and interrupt it. A few hits later and he's dead. I use sleep bolts on the second mage to get 100 TP, then repeat the tactic. I also manage to get a few HP back from a bloody bolt or two. Now the area is pretty much clear of aggro and it's just that chest and me, with no real key and only about 200-300 HP. WTF, I use my tools and open the chest. I get lucky and get the map rather than a mimic. I then sneak/tonko back to the zone line and rest up.

Getting the flames and lighting the right torches after that was just a matter of effective use of sneak/tonko. Doing it 4 times to spawn the NM was simply a long process. The NM bomb itself wasn't nearly as exciting as the string of ep to dc mob links I'd just been through. This bomb doesn't explode, so I just had to keep up my shadows and hit it with acid bolts, blind bolts and bloody bolts as needed.

I've had other encounters with multiple mobs of EP, DC and even EM mobs before while soloing on thief. Sometime I'd die, sometimes I'd pull it off. But the tonberries were the most memorable for some reason. But this has been more than long enough of a post. Tell me about your encounters.

Although I can't cite any particular incidents, what springs to mind are the times when I've gotten out of tight spots such as what you described. You're right about the adrenaline rush, when you pull something off like that you feel awesome.

I love how thief has so many options in situations like this and I've spent an unhealthy amount of time sneaking around zones of ITs just testing the limits.

It's like an addiction to me, staring (digital) death in the face, tweaking things to the point it becomes instinctual. I like to play balls-to-the-walls, so to speak, in any situation and the focus that takes is incredible.

Claiming NMs is like this, too. Especially Argus. I spent a mind-numbing number of hours down there in the maze. It's serious shit when you start to base your sleep schedule on this one insignificant thing, hallucinating because of sleep deprivation and you're doing it but at the same time it's so trivial. As if I really need 5 more accuracy over my current neck piece, but the end result, after all that, is so satisfying.

I know you wanted a story but it's hard to write one without seeming like I'm bragging about something, but really, the best thing for me was helping my friend with G3 when I was about level 68, dropping invis to light the torch and then fleeing, quickly using hide and running through the door, guessing the passwords and then holding the yagudo high priest with perfect dodge, on autopilot, reacting to the slightest change or movement but barely breaking a sweat, so my friend could get the key item before we escaped out.

That was cool.

Imps from Hell

Just yesterday I was leveling my Thief in Campaign Battles. Having the highest rank in Campaign really helps when your level 71 Thief. Pawshboro Marshlands (S) whatever in the past at this time is Beastman controlled and we have to fight the Fortress and kill all defending Quadav in the area. Well they also have Imps as defender/healers in the area.

I start out getting the tag to participate in the battle and using Flee to get there in a hurry. I usually go for the first monster that is purple and it just so happen to be a Imp with a guy called Lake yes lake, not pond, puddle, or ocean lake. He's a rdm/dnc slowing hitting this imp that is only down 25% hp. Now I have a level 45 rdm and I know how bad they can hit, but this guy must have no power whats so ever, because I come in and hit him twice and shoot a acid bolt and he's already paying attention to me in a big way. Now I usually try to use my WS on the last sliver of health to ensure I get the kill points, but lake decides to do the same and then steals it from me. We both go our seperate ways to continue the battle. I grab another Imp and continue my beat down methods. I am thf/nin and have stacks of acid, bloody, and sleep bolts. As I am destroying my monster I see my food Lakey running around with his head cut off and a Imp close behind being the humanitarian I am (Elvaanitarian actually) I bust his Imp with a sleep bolt for good measure and continue about my business well he must have just looked at the Imp to get a aggro cause shortly after that the Imp was paying a well due visit. So these two imps must have been best friends in college or something cause they loved to double team one would do the silence song while the other one the no ability dance. I soon find out that my hp is dwendling to nothing and none of my blood bolts are working, but what is this I have no more blood bolts that is why every time it lands the red dots cover and say defense down in that mess I call a log in campaign. After a short revelation and god prayer that I will configure my logs if I could just survive this battle I lag my way to my Mog Satchel and pull out one of my Bloody bolts quivers. I realize . . . I'm not going to make it. I quickly use my 2hr ability and start to string my bloody bolts back to back along with my sleep bolts for the link. And where is Lackley sitting in a pond chillin I mean he saw me help him!!!! what a jerk. I forget to put up my shadows and my 2 hours runs out and I quickly pull it up (Thank you Evasion). After a few more bolts I am at 300 hp and the first Imp is dead I sleep the other one and heal for just a moment at 500 hp the Imp and I are at it and he's really really mad. He starts spamming no ability songs at me and hitting me pretty hard soon Lakes decides to grow a pair and start his assault and I already know what he's up to he wants my kill he wants my 100 exp points I can feel it. I can't believe after what I went through he wants to try to one of me and so I sit here waiting watching and then here comes my chance. As the no ability songs is put on he does a silence song and I quickly use Hide and run a few feet back he turns and starts to wail on the rdm from hell. I come back to view the massacre but to my unaveil he can solo him when the imp is 50% and Lake is at 100%. As it about to end I run quickly to the Imp and use Sneak Attack and Dancing Edge hitting awhooping 543 damage overkilling the Imp. As put my weapons away I lock on to my favorite rdm and give a roughly grin emote to show that he's not the only sneaky one in the bunch. . . .

In conclusion I had to go afk for some hunny does and leave my thief hitting the fortification and it still hasn't ended. I fight a few more monsters, and finally the massacre at Pashborow has come to a end, and I recieve my whooping 4050 in exp and ???? in allied notes. Not bad at all, but least to say with boring Campaigns I love a little excitement it's keeps me going while I solo this job 4 more levels.

To Arietti: It was cool counter camping Argus against you. I saw Leech King pop and you seemed afk so I just walked down there and killed it.

As for my story on the Thief job, what is there to tell? Snugglebug only 34 Thief.

Let's move on to a couple of different stories.

Once upon a time, on a character I'm not in the mood to necro the name...my first 75 job was Thief. OK, let's talk about these painful memories of being an all-star noob.

I recall leveling THF to about 20 for my social linkshell as a static, which did not continue very long. We were all pretty new and only the couple staticing knew what staticing meant. A couple members kept leveling, I believe I tried but my THF didnt get any luck on invite.

After awhile, my THF in the 38-42 range got its first kick from an elitist party leader. Even then, I knew I was leeching from everyone's party because my wiffs and low dps were horrid. I dont blame the leader for the decision, but I was pretty upset for awhile. Back then I knew "dex is sa agi is ta", but that didn't help me realize the importance of stacking the right gear and using macros at that time. I just wanted 45 for TH2, didn't even know about the knife and armlets until I reached Dynamis level.

So I finally hit 45 and take a few days to farm! Yes, this aspect of the game was completely new to me. However, spending what little gil I made on the raptor armor set that does nothing for THF really didnt help me.

Around this farming session, I befriended someone from linkshell and we went off and duoed Mycophile. What's so important about this? Well I didnt own the CoP expansion. After trying to zone into Carpenter's Landing, I logged off and went store to store for a few hours. I finally found the CoP copy and installed it...more time wasted. I log back on, and my linkshell friend was still online doing something else. Anyway, we got together asap and duoed Mycophile a few times until we both got our cuffs. After that we "staticed" for a few levels, THF and BLM. Honestly, I thought BLM was overpowered back then with Freeze and Warp II. Still, was a mage and I didn't plan on leveling it. But thats another story.

Skipping forward, I recall my THF hitting at least 58 in a Boyahda Tree party without level sync. Oh, and I was /war up until ToAU came out. I only remember this because...OK.

This will sound unlikely, but I literally had my first party with a friend that lives about a mile from my residence. I never talked to this friend nor did I know about that. I met my RL buddy through FFXI counter camping Spook. We went to the same....whatever the education is before college. There is an age difference of a couple years, enough that we never officially met before FFXI. So, how did this friend know who I was? Well this person got confused and mistook me for a sibling, of which quit FFXI quite some time before this. Anyway I was on THF camping Spook against the mule my friend left down there.

So yeah, THF58/WAR29...took my war to 37(I believe it ended up at 38) to forget about it at that time. First experience points party with my friend in Wajaom Woodlands 57-60 in that range, obviously I dont remember lol. All I remember was birds dying before SATA was up and giving around 100 exp and some small chains. Around this time I realized the importance of accuracy, specifically sushi. A Ranger gave me a free sample and I saw myself pwning those colibri...well as much as a noob can call pwning over wiffing. So much so, that I never pulled hate and got my food stolen.

The rest of my THF levels seem to be a blur, switching from Bibiki Bay to Caedarva Mire. I did ding 75 in Caedarva Mire though off an Imp. Obviously, I did not melee Maat on THF to win. I finally got ninja leveled up in the high 50 low 60 range to sub for THF.

So what did I learn taking THF to 75 first? Mobs that aggro and what detection, leveling camps and pulls, farming spots, basic importance of gear, basic importance of food, importance of subjob choice, various NMs. What did I neglect to learn? Forming decent parties with specific jobs (no level sync made BRD and COR rare to PT with), the specific job roles outside of THF (omg RDM can do it all mindset, frontal AoEs or mob TP moves in general.

OK, NMs. There was this time I mpked a BLM and RDM duo on Ose because I didn't understand what sleep/nuke was. Another time I was mid 60s without evasion close to capped and needed a counter camper help me kill Morbolger. I tried to duo Charybdis with a BRD and we got pwnd.

OK OK NMs v2. Mycophile vs ~THF45/WAR22 & ~BLM45/WHM22, was pretty close considering the duo and hate control from nukes. THF75/NIN37 vs Bonze Marberry(BLM), died twice, killed him twice. I was fed up with trying to farm pop item for Thief's Knife when it JUST came out and Temple Uggliaph was filled with people. THF75/NIN37 vs Taisaijin, died 1st round, came back and seemed like totally different NM without Hex Eye spam and Blaze Spikes. No drop on hat. DRK75, BLM75, me trio vs Aquarius @ Zitah zoneline. This was a pretty adrenaline rush fight as my partners were grabbing hate upon zone while Aquarius was pounding on me, wasnt enfeebled.

Honestly the most adrenaline rushes I've had were claims on Spook or Kreutzet or the Castle Oztroja NMs against bots on THF. But this was a long time ago.

I know which quest you're talking about, Osse. I was attempting to solo that quest myself. I lit all 4 torches solo on thf and it only took like 15 mins, then stupid me did not realize that I lit the wrong four torches which are the torches to the Sacrifical chamber. So I gave up for the time being since I had plans to do something else after that. I'll probably go back there again sometime to complete the quest and hopefully light the right 4 torches lol.
