have been a theif for a long time, and was wondering if there is any proof out there about TH4. my question is does WHEN you put TH4 on have any effect on drops? does haveing it on for first contact, kill shot, or middle of fight do anything? i don't think it makes a differance when so long as you get some form of hate with it on. wondering if there was anyone out there that knows otherwise.

TH is understood at the moment (by the people I know, anyway) to be a Status Effect on the monster. It is applied as soon as the Thief is on the enemy's hate list and goes away when the thief is removed from the hate list, be it zoning or dying.

Current theory as I understand it is that when a monster dies, the game rolls randomly to determine a drop, for example a goblin dies with a chance to drop a fire crystal on 1-700, and a block of Animal Glue with 300-550. The game is assumed to random for each item, and Treasure Hunter is assumed to re-roll for each item depending on the quality of the Treasure Hunter, i.e. Rolling 1-700 4 times for TH4 and dropping that fire crystal if one of those rolls turns up correct.

All of this is conjecture, though, and I have no evidence to back up the theories, only what I've heard from here and there. Values are completely pulled out of my ass after a night of Dynamis and drinking, so take it as you will, but I hope this helps.

Wiki said:
* If more than one player has the effect in a party or alliance, the strongest version will trump all others.
* This effect will remain active as long as the person with this trait is in the party/alliance, on the hate list of the mob (performed some action on the mob to generate hate), and within experience points range. Some amount of enmity is retained after a player is KO'ed, and also per SE commentary, the treasure hunter effect will remain even after the player has been KO'ed.
* Treasure Hunter is not affected by amount of damage, "luck" items, or who makes the "killshot", nor does it have any effect on chests, coffers, or caskets (including those in battlefields).
* Monsters with a pre-set number of dropped items, or other special circumstances may not be affected by Treasure Hunter. Mee Deggi the Punisher is one example.
* The exact formula for calculating the effects of this trait are still unknown.

Taken right from the Wiki page, dying does not remove TH, only a monster resetting (thus the THF is no longer on the hate list) would remove TH.

But with all wiki posts, take it with a grain of salt. See also:
Dual Wield
From FFXIclopedia, the free Final Fantasy XI encyclopedia
[edit] Job Trait Overview

* Game Description: Allows user to equip two weapons at once.
* Job Traits are always active.
* Further Notes:
o Despite the description, the trait itself does not allow users to equip two weapons at once, it merely reduces the combined delay.
The ability to equip a weapon in the sub slot is an unnamed hidden trait gained at the same level as the Dual Wield trait.
(Similar to how a job like RDM can equip a H2H weapon, but can only attack twice a round if a job (MNK, PUP, etc) with the unnamed hidden trait is used as a subjob.)

thx! didn't think it made a differance, but we all know how TH is.there is more rumors about TH than anything in this game lol

I somehow doubt TH4 gives four separate rolls, as that would roughly quadruple drop rates and would thus be a blatantly visible effect.

I've given up on how TH affects drop rates. It does increase but we'll never know exactly how much.

How it's applied and if it wears off are what I understand completely. I base it around Gilfinder. Once a THF (or anyone with Treasure Hound) has performed an action on a mob, it stays on indefinitely, it only wears off if the monster is left idle and recovers health.

I've killed a few NMs that normally drop only a few thousand gil, yet when the RMT had wiped and homepointed, the NM still dropped more gil than usual.

I'm very sure this is how Treasure Hunter works as well. When Dragod and I duo Rapido, I hold it on RDM/NIN so he can poke it on THF, go change to BLM or RDM and then we burn it down. The first time we actually tried this, it dropped an Arco de Velocidad.

hmmm, thought when you zone TH effect would be lost? that is why TH is so hard to tell fact from fiction. in the end who is to say what droped becasue of TH or just plain luck. with you keeping mob claimed lock the TH? well just one more mistery of TH lol.

I have farmed with a TH4 in sky for over three hours and never seen a dio drop and then another night watched as five of them drop for a THF3, and one for a party without a Thf in sight even. I've done ZNM's and watchted nothing drop for a TH4 and seen full drops for Th3 or 2 even.

I think treasure hunter is a light switch at SE that a bored person flicks on and off occasionally to liven up the game a bit. I see only randomness as far as Thf is concerned. ^^

Not quite, but I see how it would seem that way.

TH working as that theory dictates would not quadruple the window for the item to drop, only the chances to roll in that window. If something has a chance to drop 25% of the time and you kill it with TH4, that does not make it drop 100% of the time, it gives you 4 25% chances. What you're talking about would be the equivalent of rolling six six-sided dice and numerically, you statistically have to roll a 1, a 2, a 3, a 4, a 5 and a 6. That's not what happens, you wind up with six individual one-in-six chances of rolling any specific number.

The lotting system and suspected TH "Rolling" system is basically a (presumed) 1000-sided die. Saying that TH4 would quadruple rates is incorrect, it instead gives you the results of having killed your target 4 times. This would lead to increased drop rates, but not necessarily 4 times as many.

Edit for disclaimer:

I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TREASURE HUNTER WORKS. This is the only theory I've heard that sounds like it "fits" to me. I could be way off, so don't take anything I'm saying as fact, aside from how statistics don't compound. 25% + 25% + 25% does not equal 75%, it equals 25%+25%+25%.
