Hahahaha! Interesting, huh? The stuff I look up when I'm bored!

But I do think it's a rather interesting concept. To make their legendary beings, all Squaresoft (Or Square-Enix now) did was look up Mythology and Theology of all the oldest major world religions pretty much. But you guys are smart. You probably noticed that before I did. I only looked up these definitions out of boredom anyway; there was no real point to it.

Anyway, now that I think about it. There's a number of MMORPGs that do the same.

However, there's some that I was able to not define. Like Ramuh and Kujata... Ramuh I know is supposed to be a holy sage who later became a hermit.

Anyway... Indulge my boredom. Any others you guys can define?

haha What else did the dictionary have to say about that one?

edit: because I feel I can be too vague at times... (dictionary.com)

I think I have been mispronouncing it; can some one record a wave file of how to say that correctly?

Thanks

Fenrir (Pronounced: "Fhen-Reer")

Noun; Mythology
Definition : "(Norse mythology) an enormous wolf that was fathered by Loki and that killed Odin."

If I remember correctly, I believe this does not happen until Ragnorak, aka. another form of the end of the world. Fenrir kills Odin and Ulric I believe kills Fenrir and Thor kills Loki and all sorts of crazy shit happens!

But I do think it's a rather interesting concept. To make their legendary beings, all Squaresoft (Or Square-Enix now) did was look up Mythology and Theology of all the oldest major world religions pretty much.

Yes in fact, just about all fantastical tales are a reinvention of ancient myths or legends. Pick up just about any fantasy novel, and you will find these reincarnations. Take the series I am reading at the moment. By Kate Elliot. It contains a great deal about a group known as the Seven Sleepers. This did not contain any real relevence to me until I took a Folklore and Mythology course this term. There was a group spoken of in the Bible named the Seven Sleepers. Many parallels lie between the two in their actions and such.

Myths have established many archetypes and motifs which are common in any fantasy style tale. The hero resisting a great evil, the hero resting a damsel, a mother saving her children from destruction, the missing father quest, etc. Even Lord of the Rings, which is considered the basis for the fantasy genre, is built around the same structure as the old Myths were.

But you guys are smart.

Thanks Devifoxx :D . Good info though, fun to read through as I didnt know where all of them came from.

Yes. I hail from a world that's named after a snake with wings that was once worshipped as a sun god and god of harvest by an ancient race. We are the chosen people! Obey us or else we'll... um... destroy your crops?

...

Let's see... Is it possible to define Bahamut as well?

I know Bahamut is supposed to be king of the Dragons... And was also referred to as the "Wyrmking"... King of the Wyrms... Hmm...

Maybe I should try looking up Wyrmking, or Wyrm (Even though I know what a Wyrm is. Basically another class of Dragon... Like a "Drake".)

hmmm norse mythology is fun...
reminds me of an anime called Matantei Loki Ragnarok.....
funny show^^

but finding out that fenrir kills odin and thor actually did get loki..... man thats hardcore!!!
Loki also had another son that was a snake or something.....
Odin got pissed at loki since loki was... umm... a trickster in nature i think.

watch the anime though.... fenrir is SO much jokes.....

Yeah I actually learned a lot of Norse Mythology from Warhammer 40k ^^. There was a chapter of Space Marines named the Grey Wolves and followed a lot of that kinda stuff. That shit was sooo cool for the 9 months I was into it. Lol

Just my 2 cents on Bahamut, here is what I found:

BAHAMUT

This monstrous fish comes from Moslem traditions. The legend goes that it floats in a vast sea. A giant bull rides on its back and on the bull is a ruby mountain. There is an angel on the mountain over which are six hells, then the Earth, and then seven heavens. The bahamut is so huge and dazzling that human beings cannot look upon it. Its name may have lead to the behemoth.

BEHEMOTH

Traditionally, the word behemoth can be given to any large, heavy, and otherwise unknown animal. The word behemoth comes from the plural of the Hebrew b'hemah, meaning 'beast'.

The behemoth was often linked with another beast described in the very next chapter of Job: the Leviathan. In the apocryphal book of Enoch the two creatures are described as follows:

"And in that day will two monsters be separated, a female named Leviathan to dwell in the abyss over the fountains of waters. But the male is called Behemoth which occupies with his breasts an immeasurable desert named Dendain."

In other legends, the two are supposed to be deadly enemies who battle at the beginning of time, and must be destroyed by the Lord before they destroy his creation. In other stories these two battled on the Day of Judgment.

In Jewish legend, the behemoth was supposedly created out of clay on the sixth day of creation. This differs from the accounts in the bible that suggest that the behemoth was the first of God's works. Only one was created, so it could not multiply.

The behemoth is said to be one of the delicacies served at the messianic banquet at the end of days. The other delicacies are the ziz, and the leviathan, again reinforcing the link between the two creatures.

In the Middle Ages, the name behemoth was given to a dæmon.

Fun thread! :) Thanks for starting it Devifoxx

Here is 1 more I think you were looking fror:

kujata

The Kujata is a gigantic bull that has 4000 eyes, mouths, ears, nostrils and feet. This creature that comes from Moslem cosmology, and it stands on the giant fish Bahamut. On Kujata's back is a rock of ruby on which stands an angel. The body of the earth rests on the angel's shoulders. Under bahamut, lies an ocean; under the ocean an abyss of air; under that realm is fire; under that a serpent so omnipotent that, if it wasn't for its fear of Allah, it would swallow all creation. It is said that Kujata is so large that to travel from one ear to another or from on eye to another, it would take a journey of 500 years.

Still looking for Ramuh.

Yea it was amazing how many times in Mythology I would hear a name that I hae also heard in a fantasy RPG. Its always fun and makes what you are reading that much more interesting.
