Chapter 11
Namir opened his eyes slowly, taking in his first breaths of a new day. He started to shift his weight, but stopped when he realized he would wake Miyana, who was curled up cutely with her head resting on his chest. The bottom half of her body was covered by the fine blanket that draped over them both, while the rest of her was bare. Namir looked at her a moment, taken with her extreme beauty.
“
Did that all really happen?” Namir wondered, thinking back to the previous night. He was feeling much better than he had been the last few days, his limbs were no longer sore, and he felt extremely refreshed, although very hungry. It had been at least two days since he had anything to eat, and his hunger was beginning to gnaw at him ferociously. He stretched as slowly as he could, extending his arms out in front of him. His slight movement made Miyana stir, and she slowly lifted her head and looked at him. He looked into her eyes, and she gave him a vivacious smile.
“Good morrrning Misterrr Rrranger,” she said softly, smile still vivid.
“Good morning Miyana,” Namir replied, giving her a smile of his own. Miyana rose out of bed, not bashful in the slightest as she searched for her garments on the floor. Namir couldn’t help but stare. Miyana flashed him a look, and grinned as she noticed his fixation on her. Namir got out of out bed as well, and began dressing. A loud quick knock at the door sounded, and the door was immediately opened. Namir and Miyana both turned around to face the door quickly, and Miyana brought up the remainder of her garments up to hide her exposed chest. Namir remained motionless. Gilgamesh stepped through the door, and immediately retreated.
“Mi..Miyana I apologize, I did not realize you weren’t dressed!” He sounded from behind the door, leaving it cracked slightly.
“Not a prrroblem ‘Mesh,” she replied without hesitation, “What is it?” Gilgamesh paused for a moment, allowing Miyana time to finish putting on her fine mesh chain mail armor and wrap her black gi around it. Gilgamesh stepped inside, and closed the door.
“I understand you two just woke up, but we have more to discuss, and we don’t have a lot of time to do it. Namir, I need to talk with you in private after you eat. I am having food prepared for the both of you, and also am having storable vittles prepared as well. We have some work to do.” Gilgamesh said quickly, his eyes stern and his expression hurried. Namir nodded.
“Alright Gilgamesh, thank you for the food, you have no idea how hungry I am right now.” Namir admitted, mind set solely on the thought of appeasing his famished stomach. Miyana giggled slightly.
“Thank you ‘Mesh, we will talk soon,” she said, fussing with her hair. Gilgamesh smiled slightly, and bowed.
“Good. We will discuss the rest of these matters in my quarters after your meal. He began to exit the room, and then stopped, staying out of Miyana’s sight. He looked right at Namir and grinned whole heartedly. Namir was puzzled a moment, but understood when Gilgamesh gave him a very distinctive wink, and closed the door. Namir glanced over at Miyana, who was wrapping her tekko in an elegant looking black cloth. She reached to the floor and grabbed her small belt, with various sized black pouches attached in different locations. She glanced his way, flashing him a smile.
“Hungrrry Misterrr Rrranger?” she asked, knowing the answer. Namir felt his stomach answer for him, rumbling with his desire for food.
“Let’s go eat now!” Namir insisted, hurriedly strapping his bow to his back and walking quickly towards the door. Miyana stopped him as he opened it, and gave him a quick kiss on the mouth. Namir smiled, opened the door, and took her hand as he walked outside. Namir saw two parcels placed neatly outside the door as he walked out, and quickly glanced at Miyana. She stepped out in front of Namir, grabbed the first pack, and quickly threw it over her back, tightening the leather straps to accommodate her small frame. Namir did the same, and picked up the other sack, curious about its contents. He opened the flap on the top, and smelled what seemed to be dried meat and bread. He reached inside the pouch, and pulled out a large water-skin, made from the cured stomach of a Dhalmel. Dhalmel stomachs were incredibly large, and their leathery attributes made them quite resilient, often times due to the sheer size of the stomachs of these massive creatures, one Dhalmel was sufficient in making many water parcels. Namir put the heavy skin back inside the parcel and threw the straps over his shoulder. Immediately as he did so, he heard a small commotion in the commoner area of Norg.
“
Must be some hustle and tussle,” he thought absently. Miyana had opened her parcel and taken out a large strip of tender looking dried meat. She tore it more or less in half, and handed Namir a piece. Namir was grateful, but his hunger got the best of him. He immediately tore one tender bite off, and savored the wonderful seasoning. He couldn’t remember the last time he tasted something so good. He quickly ate the rest of what he had, ignoring Miyana’s giggles. Namir’s ears perked as he heard a crash in the same direction he heard the first bit of commotion earlier, sounding like something heavy had fallen down. He heard more noises, sounding angrier.
“
Sounds like someone really pissed someone else off,” he thought, shrugging it off. Not a moment after his absent minded discounting went by before he heard Gilgamesh’s grand doors at the end of the hallway burst open. He heard footsteps at a quick pace in his direction, and saw Gilgamesh running as fast as he could, parcel and bow on his back, with a second katana strapped around his waist, towards them. Miyana looked surprised, letting go of Namir’s hand and positioning herself in a defensive stance. Gilgamesh slowed as he neared Namir and Miyana, pausing momentarily as if he were about to speak.
“What is it?” Namir asked nonchalantly, still focused on the explosion of flavor his mouth had endured a moment prior. Gilgamesh looked grim.
“I just got message that we are under attack. It seems we have some unwelcome visitors to Norg.” Gilgamesh said in a serious tone. His gaze was focused in the direction of the commotion. “Come one you two, let’s clear this up.” He started jogging briefly towards the commoner area, with Miyana and Namir following closely behind. Gilgamesh stopped, slightly ahead of Namir, and turned around. “Oh… and Namir,” he said, un-strapping an elegant looking blade and scabbard from the other side of his hip, “I believe this is yours.” He tossed it to Namir effortlessly. Namir caught it, immediately taking notice of the beauty of the black scabbard. It had a small tint of sea blue embedded in the surface, looking almost like a silent black ocean. At the very tip of the scabbard, a small moon was carved, with initials underlying. Namir read the initials.
“
N.Y.V.,” they were his initials. Namir Yoshimbo Vasiliobi. Namir looked up expectantly at Gilgamesh, hoping for an answer. Gilgamesh grinned, and provided none. Instead, he took a quiver out of the pouch mounted on his back, and unseated the bow hanging squarely beneath it, taking both out. Namir couldn’t believe what he saw, the bow was beyond beautiful, marked with polished black wood, and the bow far outsized that of his longbow, looking deadly accurate. The bow had small flame patterns outlying both ends. The bow and the sword’s scabbard had to be the two most amazingly crafted weapons Namir had ever seen in his life. He didn’t have much time to appreciate them. Gilgamesh tossed the bow and quiver to Namir, still smiling. “And there’s something else, from me. You can thank me later, for now, put ‘em to good use ya damn Sam… er…Ranger.” Namir smiled slightly, and put the blade to his waist. He took off his worn longbow, and tossed it at Gilgamesh, along with his old quiver.
“Thanks old man. I’ll give these to you as my…er… gift… to you.” Everyone was beaming, until the sound of another equally large crashing noise as before snapped everyone’s attention back to reality.
“Right then, let’s go!” Gilgamesh shouted, continuing his sprint once more. Namir took off, mind refreshed and ready. They reached the top of a staircase that opened vastly out into an outlying among the more common area of Norg. It was utter chaos. Miyana dropped her parcel off her back down onto the wooden deck, Namir and Gilgamesh quickly did the same. Namir immediately pulled his newly acquired bow taught with a new arrow, aiming straight for one of the offenders.
“Demons…” Gilgamesh trailed, sounding astonished. “How on earth… did Demons get here? What are the Kindred thinking?” Namir’s mind was absently ignoring Gilgamesh’s words; he was taking careful aim, trying to get a feel for his bow down to the very fiber.
Miyana ripped both katana out of their scabbards, did a front flip off the first set of stairs, and disappeared before she landed. Gilgamesh seemed annoyed.
“You are
NOT having all the fun!” Gilgamesh gloated, rushing down the steps. One of the demons’s tantalizing the crowd below noticed Namir on the steps, and Gilgamesh rushing down. The demon launched itself in the air, powerful wings flapping violently, and rushed straight for Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh tore his great Katana out of its scabbard, leaping at the incoming demon with impressive speed. Namir grinned as everything slowed down around him. In one fraction of a second, an eternity seemed to pass by Namir. He had finished taking aim, and released an arrow from the magnificent bow he now carried. He watched it slowly take flight, watching the arrow as it cut through the vibrations in the air. He knew it would land exactly where he aimed the moment he let go, but continued to watch, mystified. The arrow soared towards the incoming demon; it’s fletching softly flickering through the air as it traveled. The Demon never saw it coming, continuing his crawling advance towards Gilgamesh. The arrow brushed just over Gilgamesh’s shoulder, landing directly in the heart of the demon, never slowing. The arrow pierced the Demons flesh, and continued flying out its backside into the air. Namir’s vision refocused, reality restoring in his mind. The demon didn’t make a sound, immediately falling to the ground with its force of motion; it missed Gilgamesh by an entire foot, dropping its devilishly curved sword in the process. Gilgamesh landed, immediately sheathing his great katana. He looked annoyingly up at Namir, and raised a fist.
“I swear it! You two are out to ruin this for me!” he shouted, and launched himself into the fray. Norg’s guardsmen were out now, fending off the demon hoard as best they could. The Demon numbers were quite impressive, and they all carried a multitude of various weapons. The Demons were well known for their practice in dark magic, and some even dabbled in magic from the ancients, although it had never been seen before, it certainly was a rumor. Namir launched himself over the side of the railing, un-quivering another arrow as he fell. He rolled as he landed, taking immediate aim at a demon about to deliver a killing blow unto a Norg Guardsmen about twelve yards away, and fired off an ingeniously accurate shot. The arrow struck the demon in the skull. The Demon had no time to react, it was dead as soon as the arrow hit. The guard looked over in Namir’s direction, raising his hands in a sign of thanks. The guard couldn’t see what was behind him, Namir grabbed another arrow, but it was too late, another demon had snuck up on the soldier, and swung its devilish scythe’s blade directly through the mans heart. Namir turned around a moment, launching himself onto one of the wooden support beams for the staircase, and throwing his weight off the first foot that hit. He took aim as he soared, and fired an arrow directly through the demons neck, blood spurting violently from the open wound. The demon appeared to be choking on its own blood, but Namir could see it chanting a small incantation from across the room, and dove out of the way just in time. A searing flash of lightning arced from the demon’s outstretched dieing hand, and barely missed Namir. The bolt struck one of the support beams behind Namir, and it exploded in a flash of woodchips and grain. Namir got up immediately, running as fast as he could to the center of the ground floor, attempting to take aim on another Demon. Even as he ran, he could tell Norg was winning, he saw Gilgamesh in the fray, snow-white garments flashing in a blaze. He saw Miyana, disappearing in and out of the frenzy, making small lethal strikes as she went. Namir pulled tight another arrow, letting it fly into an un-expectant demon attempting to corner one of the guardsmen.
“Namirrr, look out!” he heard Miyana shout from across the room, he turned around only to see a Demon rushing him from the air, sword aiming straight for his heart, spinning so fast he couldn’t keep up. Immediately Miyana appeared in front of him, flying so fast through the air that she slammed into the Demon, knocking it silly, and spinning to the ground. She got up, carefully circling it as it got up off the ground. The Demon hissed at her, clearly angered. Namir got up, aiming steadily for the Demon’s skull. Miyana, shook her head, never leaving her gaze from her pray, telling Namir to put the arrow down. The Demon rose up, and with impressive speed, rushed Miyana.
“Utsusemi no jutsu!” Miyana yelled. Namir watched, fascinated, as copies of Miyana began to spread out all about her. There were five identical copies of Miyana, now encircling the Demon. The Demon’s blade slammed into what appeared to be her, but the image wisped away like wind as he struck. Not even Namir was sure where the real Miyana was at this point. Her figurines smiled defiantly as the Demon regained itself, and turned around to face her images.
“
She’s toying with it,” Namir realized, staring fascinated. He heard a shrill insult come from behind him. Namir shook his head, grabbed an arrow slowly out of his quiver, pulled it taught as he turned around, and launched it straight through the chest of his attacker, point blank. Its surprised look quickly turned into a blank look as its eyes careened into the back of its head.
“
First rule, if you’re going to kill someone, do it silently,” Namir mused, turning back around to see Miyana. Her pray was frustrated, he could tell. It was absently charging the nearest of her shadows. Unfortunately for the creature, Miyana’s images looked bored, and easily leapt out of the way of the attacker. Namir was further perplexed when he saw her vanish completely, and the Demon apparently was as well. It howled, enraged, and began to charge Namir once again. It didn’t go far. Namir stood amazed as Miyana fully materialized seemingly out of thin air, Katana first. She had gotten in front of the Demon, and without looking, had stabbed it through the heart. The blood flowed quickly from the wound, but the Demon was not dead. The Demon attempted to swing its armed hand down at Miyana, but to no prevail. Miyana, still without looking, effortlessly did a back flip up and over the Demon’s head, slicing it clean off its shoulders as she did so. She landed on its opposite side as it fell to the ground lifeless, and looked in Namir’s direction. She gave him a wink, and before he could smile back at her, she was gone again. Namir turned around; the Demons were thinning out in numbers. The guardsmen were cornering the last few, firing arrows into their thinning ranks. Namir watched Gilgamesh slide along the dirt, arcing his great Katana fiercely into an unsuspecting Demons midsection, effectively splitting it into two pieces that fell to the ground in a bloody mass. Gilgamesh’s white garb was no longer white; in fact, Namir couldn’t tell if Gilgamesh’s clothing had ever even been white in the first place at this point. Just as the last of the cornered Demons were being killed, an enormous rumble shook the ground, knocking some of the guardsmen off their feet. A black vortex appeared in the vicinity above them, and out of it came the largest Demon Namir had ever seen. He heard a hushed, quick whisper in his ear pass by, and recognized the voice immediately.
“
Follow my lead Misterrr Rrranger,” Miyana said as she brushed by. Namir couldn’t see her, but had a feeling she knew what she was doing. Gilgamesh gazed up at the large beast exiting the portal above, and looked to Namir.
“That’s a Kindred,” he said matter-of-factly, “ ‘es a biggun.” Gilgamesh grinned at Namir. Namir wasn’t so sure this was the time for grinning, the guardsmen were firing arrows at this great creature as the portal closed, and they bounced harmlessly away; the Kindred was obviously protected by some sort of field surrounding it. The Kindred’s great voice boomed down below onto them.
“
Our master sends his regards,” its deep voice bellowed. The great being swept its hands up together in a slow movement towards its face, chanting as it did so. Gilgamesh looked towards Namir once more.
“This is where things go boom. This is where a
lot of things go boom!” he shouted, diving for cover as he did so. Namir didn’t waste any time, he immediately took the hint and ran towards the stanchions underneath the great staircase.
“
Stop!” a hushed whisper shouted out in his ears. He stopped moving. “
I told you, follow my lead!” Miyana assured. The Demon was concentrating, and the guardsmen below were panicking in frenzy, their arrows were not doing anything to the great creature.
“
I don’t blame them,” Namir thought as he watched the Kindred chant. A great black flux began emerging in front of the giant Demon, twisting around in an eerie fashion. The orb began building in size, and swirled with dark colors. The Kindred looked up slowly as it neared the end of its chant, and sang out the last pitch in a demonic tone.
“
NOW!” Miyana rang out. Namir caught glimpse of her jumping gracefully towards the demon, hands furiously moving in front of her body. Even as she was moving, she was concentrating immensely. She removed a small strip of paper with an imprinted seal from one of her pouches on her belt, and opened her eyes.
“
Rrraiton-san Jutsu!!” she screamed, letting the small slip fly out of her outstretched hand. Namir took the hint, grabbed an arrow immediately from his quiver, pulled it tight, and took a quick careful aim. He held his breath as he aimed, time seemingly stopping once again.
“
Miyana, you are a genius,” Namir thought as he released his grip on the arrow, letting go of his breath. The arrow flew with deadly accuracy, piercing the symbol on Miyana’s paper and carrying it directly into the throat of the great Kindred Demon. The demon immediately stopped its incantation, the giant orb of energy disappearing as he did so. The Demon appeared to choke a moment, and then began writhing in agony. Immediately a giant burst of thunder erupted around the demons head, evaporating the flesh completely, exposing only the massive white skull of the creature as it fried. The lightning swirled around its entire body, searing its flesh in a most un-dignified manner. If it weren’t for the fact that a giant Demon was burning to death while floating in the air, Namir would have thought the lightning storm beautiful, however, on this occasion, he was simply in pure awe of Miyana’s ninjutsu mastery. The Kindred fell out of the sky, landing hard on the ground. Namir wrinkled his nose at the stench the burnt flesh of the creature caused, and found that he was unable to remove his gaze from the exposed white skull of its head. He looked uneasily at Gilgamesh, who as always had a huge smile on his face. The guardsmen surrounding them had great looks of confusion on their faces, but they knew one thing was clear, they had won the battle. All of them smugly began to imitate Gilgamesh’s inspiring grin, and began examining their wounded comrades. Miyana walked calmly over to Namir, blood smeared everywhere on her black garments, but was untouched as usual. Gilgamesh had a small cut on his shoulder from what Namir could tell as he walked towards them, but seemed giddy as ever.
“Nice shot!” Gilgamesh called out as he made his way over. Namir waved weakly in response, trying his best to fake a smile. “Well that was exciting!” he exclaimed to Namir, patting him on the back rigorously as he approached. Namir couldn’t help but grin now; Gilgamesh certainly had a knack for brining a light tone to any situation, especially considering they had just fought a battle defending Norg, with dead Demon and Guard bodies littering almost every corner.
“I don’t know if exciting is exactly the way to put it, but ok.” Namir said flatly, strapping his bow to his back. Gilgamesh eyed it as he did so.
“It’s called the Shigetto,” he said. Namir looked up.
“What?”
“The bow, it’s called the Shigetto. I made it myself,” Gilgamesh replied defiantly. Namir nodded slightly, clearly greatful.
“Thank you, it is without a doubt the finest weapon I’ve ever used,” Namir said honestly. Gilgamesh grunted, giving an obvious “I know” overtone to Namir. Namir smiled once again.
“What did we learrrn frrrom this?” Miyana inquired quietly, leaning up against a post on the staircase with her head tilted down in her usual fashion. Gilgamesh didn’t hesitate.
“That was probably the worst mistake Danté could have made.” Gilgamesh seemed deep in thought suddenly. Namir was confused.
“Danté?”
“Yes. Danté,” Gilgamesh said. “I didn’t get a chance to tell you before, because you passed out after your recollection of your past.”
“
Or at least part of it,” Namir thought, interjecting.
“Danté is the entity you saw that commanded the gods the night he and Kogi appeared. I didn’t have a chance to explain what Danté is…” Gilgamesh trailed, hesitating a moment. “Thing is, I didn’t know where they were anyways, and this blatant attack on Norg was the worst thing Danté could have done if he wanted his plans to remain secret.” Gilgamesh explained.
“So… what does this mean then?” Namir asked, noticing how quiet Miyana was. She always seemed quiet when it came to information, like it was something she secretly already knew. Or perhaps it was just her staying focused, either way, Namir couldn’t tell.
“It means,” Gilgamesh continued, drawing out the sentence, “that Danté is in Xarcabard.” Namir’s eyebrows perked.
“Of course! They reside in Castle Zvahl do they not?”
“Bingo. And the fact that a Kindred appeared tonight only strengthens the proof.”
“All right then, so… what now?” Namir asked. Miyana laughed slightly, still staring at the floor.
“My boy, we go to Xarcabard, that’s what!” Gilgamesh exclaimed, sounding almost happy. Namir groaned; he hated the cold place with a passion.
“And how do we go about getting there?” Namir asked, puzzled. “Xarcabard is
very far away from here, it would take weeks to get there!” Namir was even more perplexed by the widespread grin slowly appearing across Gilgamesh’s mouth.
“I take it Namir,” Gilgamesh said, beaming with seemingly endless joy, “that you have never heard of a White Mage.”
