the flu shot, retards, and you

People die from the regular flu every year, this is just a new hot button disease. It will probably die off (pardon the pun) like the hype over Avian Flu, West Nile, SARS etc did. At my work we get a choice of getting the Swine Flu shot for free and I still don't know if I'll bother getting it. I've never had a flu or a flu shot, the only reason I'd get it is because I'll have to travel around while the Olympics are here and I use the skytrain.

I'm still waiting for more info on the 13 year old. Something seems fishy to me if he was sick over the weekend, but then drops dead on Monday. Even the health officials say that death from H1N1 in a healthy young person is rare.

Here's what I don't understand -

They say that young people are mostly affected by this flu, especially young women. They seem to have the worst of the flu, and the 28 deaths in April have an avergae age of 55. However, the flu shot clinics target groups are people with chronic medical conditions under the age of 65, healthy children from 6 mos to 5 years, care providers to people who cannot be immunized, health care workers and pregnant women. School age children, teens and adults are not on the list yet they're more likely to get and spread the flu, and are more likely to be compromised by the illness.

And its only open to the public after the priority groups get vaccinated, and if there is vaccination left over.

The reason the target groups are set as they are is due to the fact that these groups of ppl are more likely to die from complications if they get the flu. The average healthy school age child or working adult is more apt to be able to fight off the flu virus with the usual medication and not have pneumonia or other complications arise.

I know why they want these target groups, but I think its silly that they aren't vaccinating those who are more likely to get it and spread it. The people who actually contract the H1N1 flu are people under the age of 60 (People in their 'prime' so to speak). The median age of death ouit of the 28 people who have died in Ontario is 55. The children who have died are all school age. We all know that schools are breeding grounds for viruses. I just feel that if they're trying to get people to get the vaccination to help stop the spread (which is the message they are promoting), then they need to include school age children in the target groups, as that's where its going to spread from.
