Im doing a project for my senior survey class about the Gamer subculture. Do you guys believe there are steryotypes about gamers or do "gamers" come from all walks of life? Most people in my class think gamers are nerds and losers.

There are stereotypes AND gamers come from all walks of life. So basically both statements are true.

I think they come from all walks of life. Back at home before I went to college, I remember coming home from school, getting a call from a friend asking if I wanted to play SSBM. This happened all the time btw lol Anyways, I'd get there, and just the diversity of all my friends would be funny. We ranged from nerd to hot chick lol It was always fun. Then again, my school was very tight knit only have 305 people in my graduating class lol Everyone was friends and we all played video games.

Basically I rambled and was trying to say everyone plays video games.

Hehe rather interesting... Last week I had to do a speech on a sub-culture and while doing a minimum of research necessary, I ran across something that startled the shit outta me! The largest target demographic for games in 2005 is NOT males age 18-35....it is....FEMALES aged 35+! Needless to say I was rather startled.

That stereotype comes from back when games first started. Programmers in their garages making a game. Now you can see just about any guy, and increasingly more females playing games. Halo anyone? Everyone plays now... :D

I guess I fit the gaming stereotype moderately well. I wear glasses, do well academically, that sort of thing. And I'm a huge nerd. Come look at my collection of Star Wars novels, and you'll go "...you fuckin' nerd..."

Wonko is the biggest nerd I know

My cousin is a prime example of a stereotypical gamer. He does very well in school, plays games constantly, and just keeps to himself. I, on the other hand, can be best classified as you're stereotypical stoner

so i believe it's a mix of both

I'm a highschool senior, I run cross country, indoor track, outdoor track, and I run during the summer.

I'm not amazing but I've above average too, 2:06 800m, 0:54/55 400m, 4:45ish mile, etc.

I do ok in school I guess, nothing worth bragging about, I'm average. No glasses, I'm very tired in real life from not getting enough sleep due sometimes, otherwise I'm very hyper and love to hang out with my trackie friends.

My friends whom are trackies also, happen to be casual gamers themselves. They're not in computer games but they have xbox, cube and such. They like games like the popular halo 2. Oh and we all love different types of rock music 80-current and 80s movies like rocky, john claude van dam, and arnold, we eat that crap up. We all love rave/techno stuff too, having random dance parties in the middle of school day in the hallways, and always causing funny but harmless pranks at lunch, such as a school food fight 8)

One senior of last year's class really did fit the stereo-type though. Very nerdy, really good grades, quiet polite kid, and very to himself. Another was this perdorican(sp) kid, small, no glasses, had sex with really slutty girls and stuff like that. There were 2 others, basiclly smart kids, but one wasn't really to himself, funny kid and stuff. All 4 of them were filled with PC knowledge unlike me, I'm a dumbass.

So I say all walks of life: Sports, trouble makers, hardworkers, little perverts, polite nerds, mean nerds, party people, and anything else I missed. I don't nkow many girl gamers, but it's not something I think many start talking about in real life much.

I do believe there are gamer stereotypes. I am a software developer in RL. While I was in school my roomates used to all make fun of me because I was a computer science major and iI "should" stay stuck in my room playing video games all day. I never really played video games in college because I was a college athelete and didnt have the time but now its a different story. So yah I would say both statements are true. There are always stereotypes on EVERYTHING but some dont always apply.

This is the truth.

PC gamers = GEEEEEEKS

Console gamers = Normal

on a side not think about all the cool, smoothe people you know that play games, do they play on PC? Nope, they probably sit around have a beer with the guys, play some Madden on the PS2 etc.

PC gamers are just dweebs guys let's be frank.

Now I play an MMORPG on the PS2, so I'm only borderline geek :P

Gaming has become too popular to still hold true to the stereotypes.

I am a mid-twenties actress who is a fitness intructor during the day. Not many would look at me and see a "gamer" but I still don't find it odd that I am. I still spend most of my free time with friends or doing shows - but yeah. I enjoy zoning out as my sexy elvaan. :) Nowadays if you can find ANYTHING that relaxes you - you are golden.

I am one of those 35+ female gamers. I have gamed most of my life...although when my children were much younger I really didn't have the time. My husband and I are both gamers...my kids are gamers (console <yes please>) We have 3 ps2's, a ps1, an xbox, gamecube and various handhelds.

We are also busy with cubscouts, volleyball, basketball etc.

Yeah, I believe there are still stereotypes, though they are starting to wane. I used to believe the stereotypes, for a looong time. Having played video games since I was 8 years old, I got used to all my friends being pretty much social outcasts, because back in ole' 1995 that's how it was. The popular kids played sports and went outside, and the geeks stayed in playing the games.

Even today I find myself unconciously having stereotypical thoughts about gamers, an example would be FFXIplayers.com. First time going there I expected to see a lot of 'geeks', despite knowing that it wasn't really like that anymore (having quite a few friends who wouldn't be classified as the typical gamer geek). Seeing what the other gamers looked like, seeing that they aren't all (and excuse the stereotypical description) fat, slobenly, glasses wearing, pimple faced losers. In fact very few are, very very few. I was almost ashamed when I realized that when I played a game I automatically thought such a thing.

Anyhow, back to the topic. Definitely there is still stereotypes. However, they are beginning to go to the wayside as video games become more popular and more people realize that they are actually a valid form of entertainment; much like movies or television. I just await the day that the times has a Video Game Top 10 :3

Incorrect. You play a mmorpg, you are a geek. If you played madden or somthing, I would say there is no connection, but your playing a Japanese mmorpg. There is no way your not a geek

I'm a geek. I have no problem with being a geek. I am a pretty cool geek. I have a gf, a real job, and even a dog. I joined a party fraternity in college, and hung out with the cool kids in high school.

I rock my geekdom.

And for the record:
PC FFXI Geeks = Geeks with teh 1337 b0x3s
PS2 FFXI Geeks = can't handle the power of teh 1337 b0xes

I'm a geek. Just the 19th (or w/e Saturday before Holy Week was) I won 6th place in the Honor Society's "Intellectual Competitions"... in Math!!! I just received my (early :D ) college acceptance letter, I've always been an A+ student, I keep to myself, write and read a lot... type correctly in forums.... the list goes on and on.

Proud to be a geek, and proud of my accomplishments. Hell, I shouldn't even be able to speak English (I'm a dirty Puerto Rican, so what?) and I speak it, I daresay, well.

Enough about me, yes, the gaming community has both, but the geeks are the ones that will later own the gaming community or that will have the un-geeks kissing their feet.
