The Golden Compass

Hmm, I wasn't planning on watching this because I didn't know about the controversy. Now I gotta go watch it, and maybe even read the book ;O

Who cares about the anti-christian controversy; this movie has ARMORED BEARS!!!

Unicorns? Should they be pink to go with your frilly dresses?

And not just any armored bears... it has an armored bear that sounds like Ian McKellan as Gandalf. Now we know what he was doing between the fight with the Balrog and showing up as Gandalf the White.

I fuckin' loved the books, read them when they first came out aages ago, I am really looking forwards to the films, I'm so smitten with the books the films could be terrible and I'd still love it.

He speaks the truth. Book was good, probably gonna go watch this this weekend. I'd recommend reading the book too, I don't reach much but this one actually kept me interested all the way through, lol.

You're going to be disappointed if that's what you want to see. As has been pointed out, the anti-religion stuff has been removed from the movie.

freegin a D: ima cry are the books good, i dunno ive been reading books lately

Ok come on now. Armored Unicorns are like ninja cats! Totally the whole point is to make them badass D:

I have yet to see the movie or read the books, as I'm being cheap, but they've got a huge draw for me. I love books/movies like this, I'm big into the fantasy genre. Every preview I've seen has looked fantastic (yay for more movies with Witches in a good role XD) and I cannot wait to see this.... Armored Bears!!!!

I've heard about the controversy and I've read a lot on it. While most of it is nearly as laughable as 'Harry Potter will turn your children into Satanists' some of the 'summarizations' by the author haven't exactly put this into good press. People focusing on the controversy of 'Zomg he wants kids to kill god' should probably consider that as an Aetheist he isn't focusing on Christianty, Islam, Judaism specifically but on all Religion and/or form of Diety. Doesn't really make 'Killing God' sound any better but its less personal than 'Dude wants your 4 year old to kill Jesus'.

I thought the movie itself felt too rushed. It needed more character development instead of dashing from plot point to plot point. I'll probably pick up the books and do my part for the atheist agenda, ha-ha.

another movie that suffers from the book to movie sindrom

theres no way you can cram the detail of a 500+ (however many pages it was) into a 2 hour (however many hours it was) movie

same thing with harry potter and the lord of the rings

Both Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings did an excellent job turning the books into movies. Some things were lost, but the vast majority of them was stuff that was unimportant to the story of the book.

This movie was more rushed, because it was the introduction; when they make the sequels, they won't have to spend time setting up the characters and the setting, they'll be able to spend more on developing the plot.

Didn't Lord of the Rings completely leave out a character or something in the movies?

A character that was unimportant to the overall plot. Harry potter has done it too (Ludo Bagman)

And Peeves the ghost. He's the only reason I read those books..

Yeah, Tom Bombadill. A character that was only there for at most 20 pages in a 400 page book(only the first book too) and you never saw/heard from him again. He didn't even serve a real purpose, he gave the hobbits their swords, but they could have just stumbled across them just as easily.
