The LHC comes on 10th September!

So, it's Sept. 10th.
Why haven't I grown my three extra limbs yet?
 
Well they said the initial major tests were a success, so I'm guessing that since we're all still alive that the world didn't end. :awesome=D: lol

They are just turning it on today and showcasing it.

Real thing starts Oct 21.

They only tested sending them clockwise. (As of 9am this morning)

Counterclock wise comes later today.

Some time soon, they send them both ways and collide them.
 
Wait, so which one of you is right? I could've sworn it said somewhere that the first collision happens today?

Heard on the radio today that they did the clockwise shot today and counter-clockwise was going on later today.

As far as I know, the collision isnt set to happen today

didn't read this thread, but all of you worrying about mini black holes should read up on it before you criticize it. I for one am extremely exited about this, I want to see if my theories are correct.

Im still extremely excited and ill be at a lecture given by a team who worked on part of the LHC.

thats ironic, if this actually proves the big bang theory is correct doesn't that mean the majority of religions are wrong about how the universe was made.. and science is correct... (not trying to say god doesn't exist)

yes, it's one of my greatest fears that could fuck the world up and isnt really thought about. Lets say the big bang is proven. Ok... religions are wrong, lose all credibility and people will stop believing and society will fall apart.
Since religion was made by the human being to create comfort in them when they can't deal with society.

The big bang theory doesnt necessarily disprove religion. SOME religions dont have mention of the very beginning, Christianity, for example, could have a universe prior to the earth being created.

Just a thought.

Oh, and that lecture I sat down and watched last night was absolutely amazing. They explained the ATLAS detector, and showed how, if something comes up, it will be found.

Sept/Oct are going to be 2 very interesting months. However, we wont have results from those collisions until Spring 2009.
 
And...just in case some smartguy decides to give the scientists there a sample to "test" in the accelerator...
