The lifestyle of the MMORPG

The leaving of a great old time friend. Problems, difficulties in real life, loosing interest in a once fun game.

It comes with the idea of the MMORPG, its a community of people, they are called guilds, clans, linkshells, groups. A close group of people that come on the game to play and have the comfort of others in times like these. To some its just people, for others its as close as family. When one leaves, we mourn, we may not know it but we do in some kind of way. The last meeting of a group of people to say goodbye to an old friend, who may never be seen again in the MMORPG world.

An MMORPG is just a game, for some like myself, its a lifestyle, a passion for gaming, its not the gaming that keeps us coming back, its the people in the game, known only through text. Its the family of another world. Even though we may not know what each other like, or even each other's real names. The people get along just as in the real world, they form friendships, we go through problems just as if it was the real world. Its a long lasting friendship, even when one breaks apart from the group, they are still remembered and hoped to come back one day. To see everyone again, to talk like they did once back then. MMORPG is an escape for me, its a world beyond the real where there are not as much worries.

I used to play this game, now one of my best friend's does, I'll say Ky, her character's name if anyone knows her. Don't know if she wants her real name released to the net. She told me one of her best friends had left, Rayik I think it was. I decided to write this for her, for her friend Rayik. To tell people what the MMORPG was really about.

A MMORPG is a way to not make my summers feel lonely. Or my nights to be wasted. It's a chance to meet new people while still being able to say: afk, bathroom.

It's a chance to die and have someone help you back to normality, only to die again by unforeseen aggro... It's a second life which you can switch out of. It's a new chance to form new opinions about things that don't really matter at all...

Aye, Rayik was a good individual indeed. I've known him for quite some time, perhaps not as long as others, but he was still one of my close companions. Many a day him and I spent Rping at Knightwell. Whether it be serious or just goofing off while we fished up some gil. Back in the "n00b" days as everyone so adequately puts it. I looked up to him.

Back then I was but a tiny RDM, and a bad one at that. I was only in my 20's, and wasn't very good at my job. I used a THF sub, and all my equipment was melee gear. I didn't know what MP was, and I didn't know what it took to make a good party. I didn't know what DD or HNMLS meant. I didn't know what a BCNM was, or what Beastmen Seals were for. But I did know one thing...One day I wanted to be cool as my friend Rayik.

Long live the king of angst, Rayik. May he one day return to us in Vana d'iel.
