II PART - I ~ LOST SOULS

"We should have just walked to Windurst," Ereshkigal huffed.

"Stop complainy~waining. My little legs can't carry that far. If you wanted to piggy-backaru me, then we coulda gone."

"Pshaw. But still.. wasn't it technically the same distance walking to Mhaura from the crag?"

"Nuuu, it wasn't. At least we gotsa little rest there, too! It's not my fault the chocobo lady charges so much at Mea."

"Oh, and you think this Nereus guy's gonna give us the gil? ... FOR BRINGING BACK SOIL FROM GUSGEN MINES."

Ereshkigal sighed heavily and slumped her shoulders while walking next to Veovis to Gusgen Mines from the Dem crag. The chocobo lady told them their ride would cost a fee of 1,200 gil each. Neither had the funds on them, and so instead of walking to Windurst like the Monk believed they should have, they ambled off to Mhaura and took up an easy quest.

Counting on her fingers, Ereshkigal tried to sum up the hours that had past since leaving Jeuno. The plan, after bumping into Veovis, was to head to Windurst and find Ikari. That idea quickly faded to nonexistant. Now she and Veovis were stealing honey and chips from hovering bees they brutally crushed on their way to Gusgen Mines. Quadavs stared, watching the two as they walked freely onward.

"So, what d'ya imagine we do, Veo? Kam'lacrap's turned against us. Ikari's probably long gone from Windurst if she went there waiting on us. I don't guess it'd be too smart to stay in one place at the moment. Who knows what the Archduke's up to," Ereshkigal said, looking down at the Tarutaru as she straightened her posture.

"We should stormy~worm his palace! That's what I sayaru!" Veovis growled, his expression becoming pouty instead of intimidating. "I'll cap his knees, you punch his face in!"

"What about the guards, though? I like the sound of that, just... heeey... I know!" The dawning features of a new plan were evident in her look.

"Ohh? Tell, tell!" Veovis tipped his head back, the hood draped over his head sliding off.

"Mithran rice cakes!"

"..... Whataru?" Veovis blinked.

"Stay with me here, 'kay." Ereshkigal held her hands out, emphasizing the simplicity of the idea. "I have Mithran rice cakes back home. In my Bastok mog house. I told Gemini, meh moogle, to store them somewhere. Y'know, just in case. Anyhow, we go to Bastok after this and get those! Then we can airship to Jeuno and like, they never have guards at the docks. We can sneak up to Ru'Lude Gardens where our nancy boy's hiding, then don our costumes!"

Veovis had a lopsided frown. "Two Mithra girls? If we go as two Tarutaru munchkins, we'll do better."

"YEAH, well. No one wants to kill a Mithra. And it's all I have, so deal with it."

Entering Gusgen Mines, Ereshkigal and Veovis followed the tracks that led them past a crimson-armored Galka, then to a room full of skeletons wielding swords.

"We can get some bone chips," Veovis whispered to the Hume crouched down next to him. "Can sell 'em for more gil." Ereshkigal nodded.

"DIE SKELETON WARRIOR SCUM!" the Monk yelled, leaping from her spot next to Veovis and tackling down the nearest skeleton. Veovis panicked, throwing his arms up to wave her down before she attracted too much attention. On top of a skeleton, Ereshkigal promptly grabbed the skull and ripped it from the spine. Jumping up to her feet, she threw the skull at the next skeleton.

Veovis clapped both hands over his eyes, shaking his head. "Kiko, I coulda just Holy'd them." He pushed up onto his feet and waddled to the center of the room, clasping his hands together and concentrating on a spell while dirt was kicked up by Ereshkigal attacking every skeleton in sight. By the time Veovis opened his eyes, ready to throw out his arms and release the magic, nothing but bones laid around him with settling dust. Looking sharply to the next room, he saw his friend running in and delivering a Backhand Blow upon contact of the first undead. "WAAH! Kiko!" The Tarutaru whined and ran after her.

Once the two rooms leading toward the mining area were cleared, Ereshkigal and Veovis went back and collected all the good bone chips. Forcing the lot into Veovis's gobbie bag, they went to check out the end of the rail tracks that led to a wooden platform.

"Did Nereus say where we could find this darn soil at, Veo?"

"He said on the map, it'd be at I-7 near a pond."

"Ah... Hold on, lemme get mine out and see how far that is." Ereshkigal reached into a pouch with several small, neatly rolled maps. Sifting through each, her expression became clearly frustrated after a minute and not seeing Gusgen Mines. "Grr, I don't have it...? How can that be? Do you, Veo?" She shifted her attention downward at him.

Veovis performed the same action, checking through all his maps. He found one labeled 'Gusg.. ..nes' and whipped the parchment out.

"WHAAAT!" he wailed, looking at the map. "It's blank! BLANK! Double-crossed by that dirty~wirty map vendor! I'mma beat his nads to oblivionaru with my hammer when I see him again!"

Ereshkigal perked a brow, lips pursed and looking at him uneasily. Coughing lightly into her hand, she muttered "Riiight," and pointed down from the stairway platform. "Look on the bright side! We've been here before! It shouldn't be too hard to find our way around! C'mon, let's go through the door farthest left, then try and find this thing. Can't be too many water sources here."

"I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS," Ereshkigal cried, dropping down on her knees and beating the ground with her left fist. Two hours had passed since their entry into the mine, and they had thoroughly become lost. They found that they had been locked inside, as well. She was determined not to leave the area until finding the soil, but remembered the Galka at the entrance that might have an idea where to go.

"This is bad, bad, bad..." Veovis murmurred, weeping into his hands. "We're lost, tired, soilless, and worst of all hungry. What're we gonna do, Kiko?"

Ereshkigal fell onto her back, sprawling out and heaving a deep sigh. She opened her eyes once the dirt settled, and opened them about as wide as they could go.

"WH-WH-WH-"

Veovis's ears twitched and he looked at her, bringing a hand away from his eye. "Whataru is it?"

"GHOS-BLO-AHH!" She pointed straight up then clambered onto hands and knees and scampered over to Veovis, leaping over him and landing on her back, picking him up in the process and holding the Tarutaru over her.

"WAAAAH!" Veovis protested, catching sight of the bloody ghost hung from the tunnel's top, looming threateningly. He tried to wiggle out of Ereshkigal's hold.

"Be GONE, evil demon of the mines! HOLY IT, VEO! HOOOLY!"

After they stopped arguing, they watched as the ghost faded and another appeared. Then two more. They drifted slowly, and Veovis jerked his finger in the direction leading down the tunnel, pointing out what looked like a woman walking slowly toward them. Blood covered her head and upper front, while the rest of her was transparent. Tossing Veovis aside, Ereshkigal stood up and took out both Adargas. Veovis rolled backwards and up onto his feet, snatching his club into hand from his side. The ghost continued at them, head hanging. The two exchanged looks with one another, then at the ghost, and up at the rest hovering above.

"... Um... hello?" Ereshkigal said blankly, cocking her head and staring at the woman.

The ghost returned nothing and once she came up to Ereshkigal and Veovis, she simply glided through them.

"They not connected to our worldaru? We can see them, but... they don't notice us." Veovis put his club away, pressing his little hands against his sides and watching all the bloody specters.

Another light bulb went off in Ereshkigal's mind, and she excitedly turn to Veovis while sheathing the Adargas. "I KNOW. We can start a ghost hunting business! Totally! Like, Vana'diel Tribune would eat this up! You, me. Them. Heck, I don't even know the story of this place, but it's spooky! We can figure it out. Do pictures, question folks. We'll make tons of gil!"

Sparkles lit Veovis's eyes. The prospect of funds worthy of an all-you-can-eat night at a tavern charmed him. The idea was fun and interesting too- he didn't know anything about ghosts, harmless ones at that, residing in Gusgen Mines.

"So, let's get outta here, 'kay? We can go to Bastok. Nereus can kiss our butts. He probably was gonna pay weak for all this travel and hardwork of ours anyway. Get us to Dem, and we'll trade some beehive chips for a chocobo."

"Okay! Let's rock out of here!"

"Wait--!" Ereshkigal held a hand down at him. "LOW-FIVE!"

Veovis threw up his hand to palm hers. "HIGH-FIVE!"

II PART - II ~ ESCAPE FROM BASTOK

"Kiko, you're poor," Veovis said, poking at the bronze bed in Ereshkigal's mog house.

"Oh hush, I usually stay in Jeuno. So... it's... a bit empty in here, I know," she muttered in reply.

There was one stand with a flower pot on it, a small wooden table, then five chests next to the bed. Veovis felt sorry for the moogle, Gemini.

"Gem, help me find those darn Mithran rice cakes. I need 'em, now. I'm in a hurry," Ereshkigal groaned, searching through the first chest.

"Gemini gave Mithran rice cakes to Musketeer Naji, today!" the moogle replied.

At once, Ereshkigal and Veovis looked at eachother, then Gemini.

"What'd Naji want here?" Ereshkigal asked slowly.

"He wanted to see you, kupo! Other men were with him."

"What now, Kiko?" Veovis inquired, disappointed and worried.

"We get those cakes back, that's what! Gemini," she turned to look at the moogle. "Get my omina yukata, Azimuth shorts, and flower out."

Veovis fumbled several times while carrying the Adargas, toddling behind Ereshkigal as she led the way to the Metalworks of Bastok. When they stood on the lift to carry them up to the second level, a thought struck Ereshkigal.

"Hey, I just realized something, Veo."

"Yea?"

"My Adargas... I'd left 'em in my Jeuno mog house before I went to that party. I didn't realize until now I had them after we slept a bit in Mhaura."

"Ooo... You think someone's following us?"

"I find it a bit more scary they were in my mog house. But yeah, I guess someone's got an eye out for us..."

Stepping off the lift, the two proceeded to walk to the outside of the Metalworks where the presidential office resided. Outside of the central building, they could see Naji and two other Hume guards discussing, and holding....

"There's the cakes!" Veovis whispered, tugging at the tan sandal straps around Ereshkigal's leg. "You thinky~wink Gemini told them what they were? What if they eat them?"

"If they stuff those in their mouths from now and the ten seconds it takes for us to get to them, I'm going to be rightly mad," she mumbled. "'kay, here we go..."

Each taking a deep breath, they started over to the President's office. Still, Veovis was about to trip over every step while he carried the Adargas.

"Yoo~Hoo!" Ereshkigal waved and smiled as she walked up, motioning for Veovis to hurry over. "Hi, I was just wondering if the president was free?"

Naji's cheeks turned red instantly. The other two stood at his side, looking over Ereshkigal. She kept her smile forced and sweet, one hand resting on her hip now. "Um.... The President! President Karst is busy right now! .... Is there anything I can help you with, Miss...?"

"Kiko...na," Ereshkigal said thoughtfully. She blinked and looked down, seeing a cake in all three guards' hands. "Oh my, those look delectable. What are they?"

Naji accidently squeezed the cake a little, the wrapper around it crinkling. "Oh, these.. A moogle gave us these cakes. Would you like to try one?"

"Certainly!" beamed Ereshkigal, clasping her hands together. One of the other guards watched Veovis with an odd look, finding the Tarutaru peculiar. "Oh, and could my little one here have a cake of his own- pleeeaaase..? He does so much for me everyday, and he absolutely adores sweets."

"Sure!" replied Naji. He handed his cake to Ereshkigal, then turned around to look at the other two guards. "We can just split one, give the other to the Taru." Turning back around, he smiled at her. "Say, what was it you wanted with President Karst?"

Ereshkigal and Veovis exchanged looks. They really had not thought out anything to say, and she took a step back. Veovis followed suit. "Umm.. ahh, the President? Oh... I just wanted... tooo..... RUN, VEO, RUN!"

She stuffed the Mithran rice cakes in her yukata in mid-run, then noticed the slower pace of her friend. Ereshkigal paused and scooped the Tarutaru up, giving him the task of only holding her weapons. Naji ordered the other two guards to stop them while the Musketeer ran inside the President's office.

"Where do weeee go!?" Veovis asked urgently, his feet dangling while she ran.

"To Port Bastok! We'll hop the ship!"

The lift going down before the guards could make it helped put distance between the two groups. Ereshkigal jumped off the lift before it went all the way down, then ran their way out of the Metalworks. Turning left, she descended down the few steps, turned left again, went down more steps, and kept running until she finally made it to the port area. The ship was just landing.

"Did you sell those bone chips, Veo?"

"I.. put them on the Auction House...."

Ereshkigal's pace was slowing dramatically from being out of breath and the weight she carried.

"WE HAVE NO GIL?!"

"S-Sorry!"

The adventurers who disembarked the ship were leaving through the Air Travel Agency.

"Looky~wook! It's your friend!" Veovis squealed, pointing and almost dropping one Adargas.

"Wha- who? Oh! ITHENAS!" Ereshkigal stopped in front of the other Hume, dropping Veovis and collapsed.

Veovis rolled over and onto his feet, scowling something along the lines of "out of shape.". He brushed off his robe, then picked the weapons back up. Ithenas, perplexed by the sudden arrival of the two, held Ereshkigal up.

"We gotta get outta here, Ith! Guards 'n people are after us... but... we don't have... gil.. Hey, you're a lot harder now."

Ithenas blinked dumbfounded by the comment, looking at Ereshkigal. The Monk, standing on her own will now, knocked on the body armor.

"Sword... shield... white armor... YOU'RE A PALADIN, TOO? You were like, wearing the soft and fluffy Ranger stuff when I sa- eek!"

Ithenas grabbed Ereshkigal by the wrist and motioned for Veovis to follow as she hurried the duo along to the entrance of the Air Travel Agency. A fee of three tickets were paid for by Ithenas, and she rushed the other two to the ship with her following behind. The other two guards, now accompanied by three more, could be heard shouting for the ship not to take off. But they had not made it through the agency building, and instead leaned over the barrier yelling. Any delays in the airship would result in a mob of angered adventurers though, so even if the heeds were heard, they were ignored before the local defenders could make it down to the dock.

"Phew, that was close. And look! The bounty remains fine," Ereshkigal said gleefully, taking out the two rice cakes from inside the yukata. She tossed one onto Veovis' head, and sat down next to him.

"They should not be able to tell Jeuno where we are for hours after we've been there, rightaru?" Veovis asked, plopping down to a sit next to her.

"Yeah, it'll be hours. Let's see.. it takes what... three, four hours to reach Jeuno like this? Then the ship has to go back, then bring word. It's the quickest method too... Unless... but no, you don't think.. ah crap."

"What?"

"I doubt they'll do this, because they'll want to send an official. But a mage whose located in Jeuno that's visiting Bastok could easily warp there."

They looked at each other in silence, then shrugged. Ithenas arrived from inside, joining the two on the upperdeck. She walked next to Veovis and leaned against the barrier, and held her arms out in a 'huh' fashion, as she had no idea what happened with leaving Bastok.

"Oh, oh, Veo and I can fill you in on everything, Ithenas... It all started when we went to this party Kam'lanaut invited Cythe to," Ereshkigal said, sitting upright and going into details from the reception's drastic turn of events to the current plan.
