A few people asked for it... a couple of girls started begging for it... but here it is, a draft of the revised rules for QCDN.

I thought the old rules were pretty decent and well thought out. I was pretty challenged to come up something not only semi humerous but thought provoking as well... like what a chair would look like if people had arms instead of legs.

In all seriousness though, I'm not big on rules... so think of these instead as guidelines. Rules are hard and fast and unchangeable but guidelines allow us to use our judgement and be flexible when its needed. We are all smart enough to know whats generally acceptable or not after all.

Aside from poor grammar and attrocious spelling, I am open to your feedback and suggestions.

QCDN is a thriving community focused around Final Fantasy XI, a popular MMORPG from Square-Enix. Whether your an expert or a passing lurker with an interest in Final Fantasy, we have something for everyone and invite you to check us out.

Site Rules:

First and foremost, everyone is here to have a good time. We have a laid back attitude when it comes to most things and in general we will try to excersize our best judgement on the situations we come across. We're all human, we all make mistakes, and if you feel an action was unfair dont get all up in arms about it. Instead, calmly explain why and we may actually listen to what you have to say.

Now that being said, there are some general rules that would be helpful to outline.

  • No Porn - Everyone loves a good porn but we have people surfing the forums while at work or at home with thier parents sitting next to them. The last thing we want to do is get someone fired or poor little Timmy in trouble. Nor do I want an angry call from some mom in the midwest asking me what that Chocobo was doing to the pointed eared midget in dress robes.
  • No Non-Work Safe Images - For the same reasons that we don't allow porn, we dont allow non-work safe images. If you want to link to it - go ahead, but you must put a warning next to the link. This includes Swatskas and other hate images.
  • Spam - The spam thresh hold varies by forum and its at the staff's discretion to decide when enough is enough. We're here to have fun but we also want to be a useful resource for the rest of the FFXI community.
  • No Hacking - Our server has nothing of value or even interest for that matter unless your into Bea Author pictures. If we catch you trying to hack into the server, the forum or into a users account, banning will be the least of your worries.
  • No Plagurism - We have a lot of talented writers and artists here and the last thing we would want to see is some jerk on another site claiming our users works as thier own. In respect for our own arists and writers, we dont allow plagurism of any kind. If you want to post something that belongs to another person - be sure to give them the proper credit.
  • No Warez / copyrighted material - Whatever your stance is on the subject, its illegal and I am too poor to spend countless hours in court because someone wanted to share a $2 comic that they could've bought for themselves with the money they wasted on a # 2 value meal. This includes roms and emulators both for console game systems and hacked ffxi servers.
  • Ignorning Warnings - Were reasonable people... we dont want to ban people. For that matter, we dont even want to moderate as it takes away from the precious free time we have for leveling up during our uneventful Saturday nights. If things get out of line, we'll say so. You have to play nice in the sandbox with us and we dont steal your milk money, cool?
  • Flaming - Whether the Flame Board comes back or not remains to be seen but outside of the Flame Board, its deffinitely not okay to go around trolling members and harassing them.

If anyone thinks its funny, I have some former Flame4$ and BrawlHall winners that would be happy to proove you otherwise.
  • No Commerical Spamming - This probably wont apply to anyone here but no, we dont care about your multilevel marketing schemes or the great deal you have on refurbished ipods. People comming here to spam thier commerical products are just going to be banned.
  • What about Non-Commerical Sites? - As an admin of ShinraOnline.com we've had plenty of members launch thier own sites over the years and we've even helped them along the way. If your a member in good standing and would like to promote your site, send me a PM and we'll chat.

Nice and clear, I like it.

I think it's a great revision. The laid back aspect makes it much easier on the members.

Sounds good, not giving a definite "no!" about the flameboard will make alot of us happy(read: happier)

This includes roms and emulators both for console game systems. . .

Question, does this also preclude discussion of said emulators or will discussion be allowed provided no "suggested locations" of commercial games for them are indicated? Like if someone had an ePSXe question trying to run a commercially purchased FF7 game (this has actually come up on this forum before).

Flaming - Whether the Flame Board comes back or not remains to be seen but outside of the Flame Board, its deffinitely not okay to go around trolling members and harassing them.

Just bring it back, but make it part of some usergroup. If people dont want to see it, they wont.

I like it, good job.

QFT
This simultaneously gives many people the content they want back, provides an outlet, and removes ALL reason for flame posts outside its boundary.

The flameboard returning would be fine and possibly even a good thing (to keep all that shit off the other boards). However if you do, you might as well make it public and not try to hide it or limit who can access it. Even if some people don't want to participate, they'll probably wanna know when people are talking crap about them even if they don't reply. Maybe make it registered users only, but that's as far as I'd go with it.

Thats a bit of a grey area so let me point out three examples.

a) I dont think I've heard of the ePSXe but I remember some crap called bleem that allowed you to play PS console games on your PC. I think in that sense, I think it should be okay.

b) Discussing the pros and cons of piracy, the politics of it, how it effects the gaming community as a whole, etc, is fine.

c) Someone saying "hey I own FF7 for Playstation but I'd rather play an emulated version, can you help me out" is not as okay.

In any case this should be rare and if anyone has a particular question that they want to post but are not sure if its appropriate -- just pm someone from the staff and well confirm.

As stupid as it may seem, there is a difference between "whats the best p2p program" and "what p2p should I use to download xyz".

Actually I think you couldn't even view the flameboard before it was removed unless you were registered and signed in.

Well, all the emulator (ie Bleem, ePSXe) does is create an interface for software (ie legally purchased CD-ROM based games) to run, pretending that the PC is the console hardware. It's perfectly legal to do, the gray area comes when people download the game data (either CD/DVD images or cartridge ROM images) rather than buying it legally.

By my reasoning, c) would be fine but a theoretical

d) Hey I never played FF7 and can't find the PSX version, where can I download it and a program to run it?

would be out of the question.

However, my reasoning isn't what runs this board, which is why this post exists, now, isn't it?

there aren't any "hidden" rules that have always been there but have never been written down right? >.>

as a neat bit of information, the emulators are not ilegal. ROMs are.

Nice, very nice. You might want to sort that list so the more common violations appear at the very top. Since this forum's most legendary controversy is and has always been about flames, that should probably be the first thing mentioned on your list.

Also, what does "non-work safe" mean? Does that mean images that would be inappropriate to have your boss see over your shoulder at a corporate cubicle? That's certainly been one of my biggest concerns on this forum, considering some users' avatars barely sidestep the "porn" definition by a centimeter length of clothing (or Cheetos, as the case may be). Whatever you're going for, you might need to explain this one a little more clearly, especially since the expectations of "work" are relative (or in the case of younger posters, absent completely).

Also, flexibility to use your own judgement is nice, but it might not hurt to set out an outline of how disciplinary actions might be applied, or at the very least make sure your mods are all on the same page.

I could spend months writting down thousands of rules trying to cover every imaginable thing that can come up and still fail to get it all. There will always be unique situations ... we'll take them as they come and I think we can be fair about what, if any, actions are needed.

will Flaming be allowed when leaving a dissaprovel comment?

Also, what does "non-work safe" mean?

You pretty much have the straight of it. If someone wants to post a thread for hot bikini clad women ... that might be okay so long as the thread is marked as such so people browing at home or work dont suddently stumble upon it as they would an avatar or a tag (sig pic).

i like it, a new fresh change to the site. letting the posters use their own judgement of things is great, but you have to remember that alot of people judge certain situations differently. these are great guidelines nontheless and if we see a flameboard emerging out of all of this, i think alot of qcdn members will be pleased.

The refrence is to the Eulore fiasco a couple months ago, where sculli envoked a rule out of nowhere that had suposedly been around forever, but no one had ever seen it used. The fact that it was used to defend a permabanned member didnt help much either.
