Here's a long one :s This is like the 9th long-ass post on this I've made in 2 months. The others were written far differently, focusing more on her, and more on the negative emotions and hopelessness of it all, I always delete the whole thing and never post, I almost posted one anonymously, but wasn't allowed to make a sock puppet for it. This one focuses more on me, and less on actual emotions and stuff, probably why It's gonna be easy to hit the post button.

---

Right now I'm going through some stuff in my life. Mainly someone I care deeply about, someone I love, is suffering from a major depression. This is taking its toll on me, as it constantly beats down on my emotions, as I try my best to help her. I've downed books, scoured the Internet, paid close attention to classes whenever we're doing depression as a topic, learned all I can, and I listen all I can, do my best. I believed myself to be strong, I could handle it, I have to help her, no matter how hard it is on me.

Unfortunately I think I was wrong. This post's purpose is merely for me to vent. I've talked to friends, both RL and in game only about this, I find just saying stuff to be relieving, I don't need responses, hell I don't really care if they listen, I just wanna put it down in writing. The one downside is bombarding one person with my getting all emo around them is bad, and makes me feel worse about everything, so I try to hide it, not mention it, I'm as normal as can be as long as you don't catch me during my downs.

I find my position and emotional state fascinating, I like looking at myself with an overhead eye, because it's so odd, so hard to explain what I'm thinking, why, how, where. I think for now the best way I can tell what goes on is by splitting myself up into conscious logical thinking, and my abnormal feelings, thoughts and stuff. It's almost like an internal struggle.

Anyways, as I said I'm read up on depression and stuff, I've tried my best to gather information about it. I try my best to help her, I can recognize triggers, signs, and other things in her. But sometime around Christmas I started noticing something very, very scary. I was starting to act like she was in October. I was beginning to show symptoms of the very disease I was trying to fight in someone else. It was minor at first, I told myself I was strong enough to deal with my own minor depressions, after all I knew methods on how to go against it, plus I have high self esteem and crap like that.

Nearing the end of the year though, it was becoming more and more apparent to me that I might seriously get depressed, and things started snowballing down. See my gf, she noticed it, she noticed she was bringing me down, she knew she was hurting me. Which only made her feel more guilty, more hurt, she wanted to protect me, but she couldn't hide it, and it hurt me so much to see her that way.

Anyways I'm leaving out tons of details (they both upset me, and I could probably like write a book on this all). But if we fast forward to last week, it became glaringly obvious I myself had become depressed. I have certain trigger words that make my eyes tear, and feel that horrible sinking feeling in my chest. I end up crying more and more in private, and go into crying spells that can last like an hour. But the strangest part of this all is, I don't know why.

When I cry after a certain trigger, I cry needlessly, my mind isn't thinking of anything hurtful, it's almost as if my subconscious is in agony, but it doesn't want to give up it secrets to me, while my conscious mind remains utterly confused, I don't know why, I think to myself very logically, find nothing wrong, but the pain is there. I find those things so odd, and actually fascinating really, they feel horrible, but they make me wonder, make me think, what the hell is going on in my mind, cause I sure as hell don't know.

My depression (if it even is that >.>) is -nothing- compared to hers though, I would know. Her problems are much, much worse, and when I hit one of her triggers (they're too everyday to not accidentally talk about), that's when I feel the worse, it's at this point my self esteem goes instantly *poof* and I start blaming myself. I -know- I shouldn't of mentioned that topic, I should of kept my mouth shut. Here it's like I have two minds, I have one side, still thinking logically if you will “it wasn't your fault, you didn't know, nothing you could do, lets try method X to calm yourself and her down” and there's the other side that's like “Fuck me, I'm an idiot, wtf did I say, I know I can't mention birthdays”.

Usually around here, she gets really really bad, when it hits her she's making me depressed, which only loops back to me making me feel worse. Usually somewhere here my logical mind loses, and I start crying and crying, my thoughts are all dismal, everything seems to be going wrong, everything seems sooo bad. I'm usually quick to regain control of myself though, after about 1 minute, my logical mind comes back fighting (I love that part of me >.>) I force myself to calm down physically, and emotionally talk to myself, putting everything into perspective, telling myself “I have food, a warm bed, dry stuff, a computer, entertainment, I have good grades, there's nothing -horribly- wrong with me”. The full recovery can take 1-2hrs, during which it's almost like a mental battle, my depressed self making me all sad, my unconscious side crying for no damn reason, and logical self fighting both. I usually get all my conscious thought into control before the crying.

Once I'm merely crying but thinking straight, I have the oddest feeling of safety and security. I feel like I've already won, I'll calm down soon enough, while I still don't know what my subconscious is dying over (the crying can actually be pretty bad here, as in, have to do it in a pillow so no one hears it) but at least I know my conscious space is secured.

I guess this one post is more to describe my mental state. I know something about it is weird, I find it fascinating, I want to know more about what I'm feeling. I'm taking my own depression lightly, I feel like I can fight it well, and control it well. I've also have had some episodes of pretty erratic thinking, to the point where I really had to question my sanity, I wonder about those too.

I also find it funny, how people scoff at people who are depressed, tell them it's not that bad, things could get worse, they just want attention and etc... The funny thing about it all is, at least for me, I know I could be in some far off country with aids working in a mine with a broken hand for a bean a day, I know just about every helpful response someone could get “cheer up”, “get your mind off it”, “do this”, etc.. I just guess it takes personal experience to realize some of these things, and how it's not that easy.

I'm personally grateful I only get bad for short periods of times, and not every day, that my high self esteem, hope, and conscious thoughts fight it well, and I can stay strong for the most part.

For her however, the situation isn't so light, so optimistic. =( I'm trying my best, doing everything I can. She seems to slowly getting better, but this wouldn't of been the first time I “thought” she was getting better when it all blows up. I'm beginning to understand just how bad she must feel, before I could only comfort her, now I know that horrible feeling I get for brief minutes, she has for days at a time.

Deppresion is SERIOUS .

And in no means should be taken lightly, by anyone.

I've lost many friends to clinical deppresion. So this topic is close to my heart.

Posotive mental attitude, and friends can only take you so far. You are deppresed for a reason. I'll say from personal exsperiance that you do need to see someone who can help you, a psychitrist, or if you can't get to one, most HMO's and medicare and disability programs will cover out patient programs. Checking into an out patient program to help you is nothing to be ashamed of.

I seriously feel for you about this. if you ever need someone to hash this out with. send me a PM and I'll shoot you my number.

I wish you luck and if you need anything let me know!

[Edit: No need to quote the whole thing Yosh, it's right in the post above. ;) Fixed. -Sculli]

Thanks alot for the concern =)

I'm still a teenager, I have that feeling of immortality in me, the feeling that there are no limits. I know the causes of my depression, and the symptoms and stuff are very minor and don't intefere with my daily activities. I really do believe I'll be fine on my own, I'm not dumb either, I've have specific things that if they happen to me, I will go see a doctor asap about it, like if it's starts to intefere too much with life, or if like a suicidal thought ever crosses my mind.

My problems stem from the fact my gf is suffering from depression (it seems to be contagious :s ), but hers is much much worse than mine. reading up on the subject I do realize how important a doctor can be to treat a serious case of it, and I have suggested it to her, but =/ it's complicated to just get her to do that.

I think I'ma look for one of the other long posts I almost posted a while ago and put it up now.

The following I wrote a long time ago, I was going to post it anonymously, here's my post nearly unedited. (you can tell my mood writing this is probably a lot different than my normal mood).

Things are actually a lot better now than they were around holidays with her. (Ironically, today in health class we were doing depression, and holiday season is the worse time for it =X ).

-----------------------------------

Three days ago, in my Gothicism class we did this poem called The Raven. It's about a man who cannot accept that his wife/lover is gone forever, and the raven tells him he shall see here “nevermore” not even after death. We were going over the deeper meanings, when the teacher starts to explain that the true horror, the true evil, the bad of all of this was, that the man had no hope. “There is no hope” my teacher would repeat, without hope we are lost, we have no reason, and can be worse than death, the most horrible torture. As my teacher went over this idea of hope, a silent tear formed in my eye.

This all started (for me at least) a few months ago. My girlfriend had seemed a bit sad, nothing major, and she was worried about all the college stuff, pressure from parents ant etc.. Nothing really abnormal, I tried my best to comfort her.

One day, I remember it well, I was nearing the end of a dynamis run, I got a phone call from her, her calling from runs was normal, I even bought a headset for it. But she was crying, and crying hard. Then she said something in latin, I didn't understand it. She repeated and repeated it, and I told her I didn't know it. Then she told me it meant “I don't want to hurt anymore”. And she told me how sorry she was, how much she loved me, and how sorry she was for having to leave me. At first I was confused about what she meant, but it became clearer and clearer. She didn't want to leave me as in break up with me. She had a bottle of blood pressure pills, and a glass of water. This was probably the scariest moment of my entire life up to that point. I was able to convince her to flush the pills down the toilet, and she cried on the phone for hours, as I stayed there utterly confused, wondering why, and what happened.

After she hanged up, I went online, looked up suicide in google. I read up on the subject, I eventually learned more about depression, and found a book in my school's library and started to read it. I learned as much as I could, I learned that she probably has had this for a while before I noticed, and I luckily said the right things to her before (I learned how if my choice of words were slightly different, she may not even be alive right now)

I read the symptom list for major depression, she had like half of them, until one day a few weeks ago, her mom, who was supposed to pick her up from school., get her to the house to change, give her $20 and send her back to school for this astronomy class thingy, forgot about her, and left her alone. I eventually was able to loan her the money and give her a ride to school. She cried somewhat, but that was almost expected.

Later that night, she called, during a dynamis run yet again (ironically the same zone even ) she seemed calm though, and her calling during dynamis was normal for me, I didn't notice anything, I asked her how the trip went, and stuff, everything seemed fine. She asked me if I was ok, and if I was happy, to which I said yes. She then said good, then she told me that I'll find someone better, that I'll get over it in two weeks, that I'll be fine.

This time she had already taken 10 pills before I convinced her to stop, she vomited them and nothing physically serious happened, but I knew it was getting worse, and I have to do something, have to help her in some way. The next few days she questioned herself, “wtf was I thinking”. And seemed normal-ish for a while, but I was not to be fooled into believing this would pass again.

----

She has told me I'm the only reason she keeps going, but that she's hurting me, and she doesn't want to hurt me, she's trying to push me away because she thinks she's hurting me. One of the symptoms of depression.

She's described how she's pushing off all her friends one by one, eliminating attachment from them, but she can't seem to get rid of me, that I'm the only one who cares about her (I try to convince her lots of people care about her =/ ) that she doesn't want to be attached at all.. so she can just end it.

Lately she showed a full list of every single symptom, meaning it's only gotten worse. She no longer likes to watch tv, go online, eat, she doesn't like to hang out anymore, she says the only two things she can still enjoy in the world is when we're having sex, and when I simply hug her tight, but she explains how even that's starting to fade away. She tells me she doesn't love me anymore, and how it's not fair that she doesn't love me, because she does love me. She seems so confused, and has stopped caring, she hasn't slept in 3 days for over 1hr, she doesn't even want to shower or get dressed, so she stays inside, she says how even talking to me is starting to lose it's happiness.

She momentarily gets better and seems mostly normal for a few days, but the “normal” time is getting less and less, and the hopeless is getting longer and longer.

---

I'm afraid. I'm afraid the disease is going to get a lot worse. She doesn't want to live, she doesn't seem the point, she hates waking up, so she doesn't even sleep, she eats and eats, but says she can't taste the food, she's never happy, she finds no purpose in life, she has no hope for the future, She cries all the time, all the time. She's alienated her friends one by one, and has even told me she's tried it with me. I'm afraid that if she loses that last bit of hope, caring, or love that she has, that the sadness and hopelessness would overwhelm her, and she wouldn't worry about hurting me emotionally in the process of hurting herself, ending her own pain.

I've told her to see a doctor, but she doesn't want to, and even if she did want to, she's 17 years old, she can't go without her parents, who would dismiss the whole thing as a cry for attention (I know their parents, and I think they are the ultimate root to all these problems). I'm trying to keep her going till college, where her parents can't hinder any progress I make (every damn time she's getting better they do something stupid like buy her brother a SECOND $300 ipod because his old one doesn't have video.. while she can barely afford bus fare home, or completely forget about her when she's going to a required class trip and needs money to go). But that's 9 months away, and I can't make her better for over hours at a time anymore.

My options are:
Somehow, someway find a way to fix the problem myself (which is 95% chance out of my ability)

Tell someone in authority that aren't her parents about the serious threat of suicide, and force treatment that way.

I know what the smart choice is, I know what makes most sense, I know what's most likely to end up helping her... but.. god damn it I can't, I don't even know why I can't this whole shit is messed up and is even taking a toll on my personal physical and mental health. But I do promise to never give up on her, no matter what I won't give up on her, she's already given up on herself, I feel like her life is literally in my hands.

I.. just don't know. I'm starting to think of the stupidest things, like buying books on what psychologists would say and what they do, to pretending I have depression to get some medicine for her. I mean seriously wouldn't that be f'in stupid of me personally >.< one website even said that I shouldn't go over the top but.. it's all I.. I just want her to be happy, this is the most scared, loneliest, hard, demanding, and sad time of my life, and the worse part is, I can only imagine, how many magnitudes worse it is for her.

I just want her to be happy. For her to genuinely smile again.

[random edit to original saved post: I cut of a whole paragraph >.> I'd rather not mention now in hindsight]

I just want her to be happy again... the most awesome Christmas present ever, would be her decision to see a doctor, she doesn't know what to get me for Christmas, she says she feels bad about not giving me anything, maybe I can convince her to give me this.

I love her, I care about her, I just want her to be happy again, that's all I seriously want right now I want her to be fucking happy, something we all take for granted something we all do every day, I just want her to feel it, I want her to be happy. ; ;

----------------------------------------------

Since I wrote this, the situation has actually gotten a bit brighter, for her things are actually looking on the rise, the only problem seems to be I soaked some of it up. But I'm actually happy I can see an improvement, it's still bad, and still serious, and still needs a -ton- of work, but I feel she's doing better, like she has that hope in her again, she's still doing bad, it becomes obvious to me at least once a day she's not ok, but she's doing better, I'm taking this one day at a time, hopefully things keep improving and nothing brings her down. Only problem is, this time of year, a nice beefy round of stress is about to strike, and I don't know how she'll take it =/

Good post.

Yoshindor is right that depression is serious business. My sister had to stop school for awhile due to depression and anxiety attacks, it was something that was pretty difficult to watch, seeing someone cry for apparently no reason and keep to themselves about it and sleep all day. All I can say is that it can be turned around with the help of a psychiatrist/psychologist or on your own to a degree, I'm no expert so I'm not going to offer any causes etc. I have my thoughts on how it comes about but they are just thought. There is hope for it to change, just keep that in mind.

Usually when someone gets depressed over someone else's depression, it's because in their heart, they aren't helping as much as they really hope to. At least, that's how it is from what I've seen..

Just try to let her know that it's gonna be OK, and not to worry so much about it. Regarding her trying to push you away....sadly, I can relate. All I can say is that with true love, trying to push someone away is simply silly. ^^;

If life were perfect it'd not be worth living, and if love were perfect it'd not be worth having. As morbid as it sounds, it's living through the rough times together that makes both life and love worth it...because your relationship easily outmatches some dumb problems wether big or small, and to have someone who cares that much for you makes life worth living altogether..

I'm sorta bad at explaining my thoughts about that emotional sorta stuff...sorry if that didn't make any sense =/ I know we aren't exactly on the greatest of grounds, but if y'ever need someone to talk to I'll try my best to be there.

I wish I could understand how you feel, I've been depressed before, but nowhere near the level that you or your girlfriend must be experiencing, it hurts me to see people in physical or emotional pain, I like helping people, I disgust not being able to, I know it sounds kind of weird but, do you remember your dreams? Dreams are the language of the sub-conscious, unfortunately, if and when I dream, I don't remember them, so I don't have this advantage but, pay attention to your dreams, odds are you might find whatever is bringing you down, and in my opinion, I think it's you feeling bad for not being able to help your girlfriend as much as you want to, and if so, if your girlfriend keeps improving, you should too, not a lot I can do to help, I don't know a lot about depression, I have a friend that has first hand experience about EXTREME depression, at which, she was completely unable to be happy, I'll talk to her about it, and see if I can come up with anything useful for you.

Hang in there bud, need someone to talk to, just PM me.

Been there, done that Dave. I was in your gf's shoes for a very long time. There is nothing you can do to help her 'til she can get a grip on it herself.

My depression was brought on by trauma. On September 23, 1999 I had to have a hysterectomy. On September 26, 1999 my sister was killed. I was supposed to be bedridden for a few weeks and instead I was up and going with my family to make funeral arrangements, a wake and then the funeral. I didn't have time to heal from the trauma of not only knowing I would never be able to have another child, but also from the death of my sister Angel.

I literally lost a year of my life. I was in a total and complete lala land. I was on Zoloft and Xanax. It got so bad I ended up not showing any emotion whatsoever.

Steve tried the first year to help me out of it. Again, I had no emotions whatsoever. Then he started drinking more and more and more. We separated and at that time I just didn't give 2 shits about a damn thing.

Needless to say, time heals all wounds. After 3 years of being on the drugs, I quit taking them cold turkey. After 4 years I started showing emotion again, but it was mainly anger. After 5 years I finally started letting the wall I had built crumble. And now it is 6 years later and my family cannot tell me enough how good it is to have their old Kathi back.

I don't know how your gf will beat it. But just keep hangin' in there and have faith. And that my friend is where you need to decide if you "can" have faith^^.

I occasionally have depression of fear, in the instance of stuff like "what if my whole family dies? what if somthing happens and I have no one left in my life?" it really doesn't bother me, it's gotten pretty bad before though.

depression is definitely serious in some cases. not because of suicide, but more because it can get so much worse so fast and is so hard to treat, because there's virtually nothing physical about it.

I hope she's okay, and even more so if she ever contemplates suicide again I hope she contacts you. seems like you more than anyone else could stop it.

>.< Missed those cues bigtime, pere.

Dave, I'm going to do everything I can to try to convince you that you can't do this alone, that teen invinsibility is no match for clinical depression, and that you have to do everything in your power to get her in for help. You don't need to do this alone. I'm going to keep sending you tells until you talk to me when I next see you online. Just a heads up to be expecting it.

Yeah, my best friend is depressed badly, he hates his mom (she makes him take meds since 10yo coz he yelled at her, she wen to doctor for suppresents or something), and his father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year. I really try to help him, but i can't break through. he used to play this game, and im trying to get him back on, so then i can talk to him much more frequently, and sometimes it's easier to type than to say upfront.

Also, i have been feeling like im becoming depressed since a few weeks before christmas, mostly due to personal things with myself...i dunno...

All i can say is, i hope everything gets better for you guys.
