The Old Republic

Or maybe I just got sick of doing Taris and Dromund Kaas so many times over again during beta and already burned out. I dunno. :p

It sounds like to me this is probably your main problem. You did too many things over and over again during the beta. I just played one class during the beta, and not the main class I was planning on playing when servers go live. If I had played a ton of characters during beta I could see myself getting burnt out early too. There's just no sense in that. Instead I got a good taste of the game and can still go into the live servers with a fresh perspective.

Now sure, since I'm going to play a Sith Warrior rather than a Sith Inquisitor all the initial areas are going to be the same, but like I said already, I'll have different objectives to complete while in that same area. I don't mind this one bit. Also when servers do go live and I play one class through to completion I plan on varying it up so that it doesn't get too similar: SW, BH, SI, IA, then probably JK, Smuggler, JS, Trooper. This also means mixing it up further by picking alternate advanced classes for classes that are mirrors of each other. While I plan on playing a Juggernaut (single saber) role on my SW, whenever I get to JK I'll be playing a Sentinel (dual saber).

Just another way to vary gameplay and keep things from being too monotonous, if that's even really possible. Only time will tell for certain, though I'm willing to bet I'm going to enjoy the hell out of all of it.

Well, today's the day. First day of "Early Access". And before I begin my rant. I and my friends will be on 'Sword of Ajunta Pall' if anyone wants to find and play with me.. assuming I get to make my character. Back to rant.

Notice how I put that in quotes. So far.. the stupidest "Early Access" I have ever seen. Or more correctly, the stupidest way of going about an "Early Access" aka. "Head Start".

So they're sending out your early access invitation in an email. But they're doing it in waves. And get this. You can't play, period, until you get that email. /facepalm

They're sending out emails every 1-2 hours it seems. It makes me want to rage so hard.

I was expecting to be able to get on (considering I'm available for the earliest starting period, aka. Today) this morning when I got home from work, since it just so happened that they announced that servers would come up at the exact same time I get off work. So I got home in like 10 minutes and turned on my computer and "There is currently no active subscription on this account."

W T F? So I, several minutes of going through a reoccurring 30 second 'waiting room', finally get to the official forums and find that hey, I'm not the only one afterall. I check Facebook for further info, and they pretty much have posted all updates there anyway. So I got the scoop and it smells.

So..now that I've stayed up for 3 1/2 hours after I got off work with expectations to have been playing by now or at the very least SECURE MY NAME, Instead I'm still looking at my empty email and spam folders going "Wtf?". Every other mmo that I've participated in a 'head start' or 'early access' allowed players to play the game when the servers became active. Just like a beta test. There's no reason to complicate things the way they are doing this.

Depending on the number of preorders they got in what is arguably going to be the first major block, then there's a very good reason to stagger the invites actually. Since they're probably not opening with every available server in this wave, it gives them a chance to stagger the logins, and see just how many servers they're actually going to need, rather than throw up, say, six servers and watch them get utterly obliterated under the wave of early access people.

Which happened to Warhammer Online.

*sigh* Well, for those of you who might have been interested in joining me and my friend's guild in SWToR, Alpha Legion, there has been a change in our server selection choice. I am not happy about it, but apparently we are now going to roll on a PvP server, instead of a PvE server.

As of yet, server assignment hasn't been revealed. I will update when I know more.

The leader of our guild insists that it won't be some pvp gankfest, and that pvp will mainly be done in battlegrounds/warzones and Huttball. I hope he's right.

PvP servers are a gank-fest on Tatooine for sure, but damn is it fun to roll up on a group of Imps trying to kill Trapjaw and decimate them. I can't speak for the planets after Tatooinie, but I do know that the Nar Shaddaa bonus mission series takes you into open world PvP areas. The entire planet of Tatooine is a PvP area except for the spaceports; I would assume all of the planets afterwards are a mix of Tatooine and Nar Shaddaa.

When you get into early access has always depended upon when you added your pre-order access code to your swtor.com account. They also said back in November that the early access would be staggered so that they could gradually increase the load on the servers instead of opening the floodgates.

I knew about the staggered entry to early access. I just figured I had put my code in early enough to start the first day. Either way, I did get in on the second day. So any complaints I had are moot now. I'm happy.

On Sever: Sword of Ajunta Pall / Name: Ecks / Faction: Empire (duh) / Class: Sith Juggernaut (Immortal)

Yay!

I heard Tim Tebow is going to endorse this game:

Spoiler:

gonna be kicking it on "Wound in the force" server, on sith side, making a bounty hunter. wont be able to get the game till Christmas tho =(

ALMOST got the game at target today... Is it worth it to buy it and pay the 8.99 fee for the subscription? Honestly... I am not a die hard star wars fan, and am just looking for a game to replace 11. I have been giving thought of waiting for version 2 of 14... Can I have some insight please?

I'd like to know what universe you're in that only pays 8.99 for a subscription fee.

As for your other questions. Hard to say. I for one, am loving the game, but I also highly enjoy Star Wars. They work hand in hand. If you are, as you say, 'just looking for a game to replace 11' then The Old Republic will certainly do that. It's a lot easier than either of the FF mmo's to play. Controls are nearly identical to World of Warcrap, but this works well with this kind of game setup. Visually, the game isn't as realistic as XIV was, but the art style really works perfectly with the Star Wars universe. The music is top notch and the stories are excellent and highly enjoyable. Each class has it's own story you play through so essentially if you played all 8 classes, you have a game that gives you 8x the story.

If you have a lot of free time you can probably get to max level pretty quickly. I've been playing off and on since December 14th and am only level 26 (out of 50), however there are apparently people that have already reached the level cap. I call them no-lifers, or just people who don't want to actually enjoy the game. I just don't get why some people out there feel the need to rush through an mmo when it first comes out, but they do it anyway.

There is certainly much to enjoy in this game, though particularly if you are a fan of Star Wars or the Knights of The Old Republic games.

Some of us who are level 50 beta tested for months on end, so we already have seen the story countless times, which makes it easier to skip when you're playing your launch character. Also, since I had to take 14 days of vacation by Dec. 31st or lose it, I took half of it during the early release period.

Now when I roll some of my alt classes, of course I will slow down and watch the dialogue scenes because I have yet to experience those stories. It is nice to have a level 50 who has access to resources to keep those alts well-geared as they level up though.

RobbaLink - Bounty Hunter and Spritius - Jedi Sage on Thana Vesh Server. I've enjoyed the game so far. I like Star Wars though. I occasionally lag when I go to Cantina's and first enter instanced errors but that's probably my visual card. That shits getting replaced. I enjoy the game a lot though, I like the different story lines I've had so far. I like the gather/craft/crew system. I'm level 13 on the Jedi and level 11 on the Bounty Hunter so not too far but y'know, so far so good. Also, if you're paying monthly then it'll cost you $14.99 per month. Pay six months at a time and you save $12 total so y'know, there's that. I'm paying monthly until I know I'm in it for 6 months, then I'll switch pay methods. Though you can get a 3 month time card from Best Buy for $30 I believe.

I picked the game up earlier this week and have been getting a few hours here and there. I really enjoy it so far, but i'm only level 9 (lightside commando). Still trying to figure out a lot about this game. I joined a lightly populated server and no one has been really chatty so i've been kinda bored just running around doing everything by myself.

I am a level 36, almost 37 Sith Juggernaut and I still love this game as much as when I was under level 10. Reportedly the Republic stories in general kind of suck, with exception of the Commando story. This is just what I've been hearing. The Empire on the other hand is where it's at. So far from what I have experienced and what I have heard of and seen of a few of the other stories they are all kick ass and awesome on the Empire side.

Now being 36 (mind you the level cap is 50) I have only completed Chapter One of my Sith Warrior storyline with no idea when or how it will proceed to the next chapter, let alone how many chapters there are total. Though I suspect I will still being continuing on with the story missions even after I hit level 50. I have absolutely no problem at all with this because they are great! The storylines are awesome and the rewards are.. well, rewarding.

What little pvp I have experienced has been both fun and frustrating, but then I've never been into pvp.

There are still quite a few bugs to work out, something that will be an ongoing process but still, these bugs are really major, and core improvements are already scheduled to happen this month.

Long live TOR!

So how is the game in terms of leveling? Is it Vanilla WoW grind or is it easier? Also from what I've seen the UI is worse than WoW's default UI which is pretty bad.

Leveling is pretty easy, it is completely possible to level through the entire game by yourself, but doing that you'll miss out on Heroic quest areas and Flashpoints. Some classes are apparently harder to solo on than others, but as a Juggernaut (tank) I've had no problems rolling over my solo content. I hear from a few of the people in my guild that are playing Sorcerers/Assassins (Sith Inquisitor) that it's a bit harder for them sometimes, but I still think it's completely doable.

The UI isn't bad. People make it out to be absolutely horrible and that isn't the case. It's a workable and nondetrimental UI. Could it use a lot of improvement still? Definitely! However it still works just fine and UI improvements are one of the things BioWare is looking at because they have received so much negative feedback. I'm fine with it personally, there are only a few things I would add and/or change. It would be nice if you could resize it and customize it but those options are there yet.

I don't know what compares to Vanilla WoW as I never cared to even bother with WoW when it was brand new. By the time I got around to trying out WoW, Cataclysm was already out. The game lasted me about 3-4 months, I did all the story and the game was boring after that.

The Old Republic on the other hand has 8 completely different stories and many ways you can go through each story, either by different dialogue choices, dark/light side options, class and skill tree options (some things you encounter as one advanced class in the same story could require totally different tactics based on what skills you have available to you). And then there's the PvP content, can't really comment on this yet as I haven't gotten big into PvP yet. There are also Space missions which I haven't really done much of those either, I've done 1 and it was interesting but kind of hard to get the hang of at first. And of course there are Flashpoint missions. I think the game truly shines with Flashpoints. Every one I've done with my friends has been fun and fairly rewarding. Epic boss fights would be the best way I can describe these, but the bosses are just the icing on the cake. The storys for why you are going to these places and doing the things you are doing in them are engrossing.

How is the ranged tank working out? It seemed like an interesting concept.

Also GIS seems to point that I hate the Jedi side's UI rather than the Empire. Although the amount of skills is a lot, but I suppose that makes sense with no auto-attack. I would assume that a lot of the skills go unused.

I can't comment on the ranged tank thing. I have yet to experience it. So far there are only 3 classes on either faction that have tanking capabilities if you pick the tanking spec tree. As for Empire; Sith Warrior (Immortal Juggernaut), Sith Inquisitor (Darkness Assassin), and Bounty Hunter (Shield Tech Powertech) and I don't care about the Republic but their classes are mirrored and only vary slightly in power names, effects, and on one occasion - weapon type.

Both Assassin and Juggernaut are melee tanks and since I have yet to see or play with anyone who's decided to tank as a Powertech BH I have no idea how that works, but I hear they have a lot of punching attacks so that sounds like close range and mostly melee. It's an interesting idea, but I've yet to actually see anyone play that spec out of my group of friends. In fact there haven't really been that many people rolling the Powertech advance class compared to the Mercenary class, and when someone does they usually choose to go with a dps spec tree.

TL;DR version: I don't think there actually are any 'ranged tanks'.

Also GIS seems to point that I hate the Jedi side's UI rather than the Empire. Although the amount of skills is a lot, but I suppose that makes sense with no auto-attack. I would assume that a lot of the skills go unused.

Again I can't really comment on the Republic side, I'm unaware if their UI is any different than the Empire side. If it is I only imagine that it's the color scheme and not the actual UI. Though to be honest from what I've seen they are both the exact same UI.

As far as skills go, yeah there are a lot. I'm level 39 and I almost have more skills than hotkeys to place them (not really, but I dislike using the left hotkey column so I don't put any of my skills on it). Yet don't be mistaken. I actually do use almost every single skill I have because some are on cool down, while other are only available when certain conditions are met. For example I have a sweet ability called Savage Kick where I do a kick ass whirlwind roundhouse for a lot of damage, but it's only available on a slowed enemy. I also have an ability called Pommel Strike, only usable on incapacitated (ie, stunned or paralyzed) enemies. And then there are your ranged abilities that aren't active when mobs are too close to you. I use them all and sometimes in a single fight. It definitely makes combat feel dynamic with so many options.

There is always a situation where you will use every one of the skills you have available to you.

The vanguard is the ranged tank. I did a heroic with one today and i don't know how they are supposed to hold the enemies. He engaged it first and then as soon as i started firing he attacked me. I'm the commando which is dd/healer so i just spammed my cure bot and it couldn't take my life down fast enough.

I've partied with a number of tanks that either couldn't hold hate or couldn't take damage. I'm a healer, so when I'm getting my ass kicked it means one of two things: You can't hold hate, or I'm healing too much because you're taking too much damage.

As for tanking, I made a Bounty Hunter tank as well. I tanked no problem, my damage was easily mitigated by my stuns and it seems that just by being a tank you just garnish more hate from attacking, that's it. But i'm only level 13, so I really can't say anything definitively about that. My third character is a DPS smuggler. You get a couple stun's, knockbacks, and slowdown effects to make it so that you can use both countdown attacks and do a kite/instant attacks in between. If you're not a dumbass, it's fairly easy.
