The Pope's Dead....

It's 11:30 p.m. and I'm waiting to see if I should print Page 1 of the newspaper or just hold right up to deadline because the pope's death could be announced any moment. More likely it'll happen halfway through the press run because that's how my luck works.

Mostly I'm just hearing the feeding frenzy on CNN and the other 24-hour news channels. They're so eager to fill up time it's scary. How long until we get a comment from Father Guido Sarducci? I think he's the only high-profile Catholic who hasn't been interviewed yet.

I'm not a Catholic nor am I a Christian, but I'm saddened by the Pope's condition. He's a good guy, and I have the utmost respect for him.

Yep... he died about 2 hours or so ago. He'll be replaced by one of the Cardinals, not sure which one though.

I've heard rumors that they are considering a French cardinal, a Brazilian cardinal, an Italian cardinal, and a Nigerian cardinal. Can't remember names.

they said it'll most likely be a guy from South America, most of them are from there

For now, it's the... something, dunno name in English, but it'll be days or weeks before the Cardinals elect a new Pope. They elect them, not get one from a hat...
A Pope must be elected, I think, by two thirds majority unless there is a stalemate for twelve days. Then a Pope can be elected by majority vote. And who said anything about hats?

i thought all the popes prior to JP2 were italian? He was the first polish guy to be elected.

It actually takes upword of 15 days to elect a pope. When the pope dies, a bell is rung in the Vatican, and usually thousands of people are already there and the mourning begins. However, it usually isn't until a few weeks later that a new pope is actually elected, and then white smoke is sent up a chimney notifying that a new pope has been elected.

He was the first non-Italian Pope in something like 450 years, and from what I've read his election was a great surprise, and it only took two days to elect him. Of the names of potential successors I've seen thrown about, Francis Arinze and Oscar Andres Rodiguez Maradiaga interest me the most. I wonder which name they're going to inscribe on his sarcophagus, or whatever Popes get; Karol Wojtyla or John Paul II?
