The Pope's Dead....

Yep. All true. He went to the jail and forgave him and all that jazz. And since he was shot, he started riding in the Pope-mobile. I want one of those...

they do 9 days of mourning after his death and then lock the cardinals in a room and force them to elect a pope within 15days, if a decision hasnt been made yet, they will only give them water and bread from that day on untill a decision will be made, while they have no contact to the outside world.....

kinda cruel to do this to the holy people of the world wouldnt u say? >.<

and when a new pope is chosen from the cardinals, they will puff white smoke up a chimney

I agree with Wonko. While I may not be a Catholic or Christian, I find the Pope's death a very sad event. For some reason a few of my friends laughed at me for this. I don't know why, they just kind of asked me, "Are you serious?". When a man such as this, whether or not you share the religious views, it is a loss to be mourned.

Yep.

Most traditions are very symbolic. We Catholics have most of the rites we have from VERY old customs. All we have now is to prevent government infiltration or influence, a clear decision, and a good Pope. After the 9 days of mourning, the Cardinals are to pray for 6 days and on the 6th they'll start the Conclave. Actually, a long time ago, they were locked inside, to sleep on cots, and cum clave "locked with a key" is the root of Conclave.

They burn their votes on a challice, or however you write it, if a Pope isn't elected, they'll add a chemical to make the smoke black. And when he is elected, the ballots are burned and natural white smoke will go up.

These traditions are to avoid what happened in the Church's beginnings, when 3 Popes reigned at the same time, once. Also the corrupt Popes, that sought what the government sought. Dunno, I love my traditions...

Also, the elected is thought to have to be a man that dominates around 12 languages, and has knowledge of biochemistry and other scientific disciplines. It's about time to end the Science vs Church debacle.

Also, the elected has to accept, and change his name as an obligation. And, if you have a End of Days mind, which I don't, you'll find that according to Saint Malachi (http://www.angelfire.com/ms/seanie/papacy/malachy.html) the next Pope shall be the antepenultimate before the last Pope ever... but I don't believe so, even though his predictions have been accurate.

I thought the black smoke was produced with wet straw, and the white with dry? I dunno, you're Catholic and I'm not. Just curious, I guess.

They used to burn the ballots to make the black smoke, however nowadays they use chemicals to make the smoke both black and white.

John Paul was a great man. First non-italian pope in 400years. He suffered enough through his life, and deserves to be at peace with god.
Although I was born christian, I do not follow the teachings. But his death sorrows everyone. Catholic or not.

Another downside is I cannot laugh at family guy anymore where the pope is in it. That wouldn't be right.

This thread's for you John

Word, Neche.

Well, I was taught that they didn't add anything for the ballots to produce white smoke. Could be wrong. O.o

From what I learned while watching a program about the Conclave, the ballots(in olden days) were burned to produce the black smoke... and that nowadays chemicals are used to produce the white smoke. However... I could be wrong.

Such a tragedy. My school today just had a nice unexpected prayer service. Was a nice service which showed many of the works he did for everyone. One of the more touching stories was when he forgave the man who tried to assasinate him and met him in jail. Many saw that picture and were silent. May he rest in peace.

the pope's death was of no concern to me, i'm not a religious person, never really been so... his funeral however caused a GREAT amount of concern for everyone in my household...
Because they planned it on the same day as prince Charles's wedding which my parents were schedualed to attend. this pushed the wedding day back to the saturday, this made ME and my sister SCRAMBLE all out to re-schedual the flights back for the extra day, arrange for an extra day at the hotel... ect...

on a side note the pope was a good man and a true avatar for the concept of peace, may his soul find rest at the right hand of the father.

Well, we now have a new Pope. Benedict XVI. May he have such or more wisdom as the late John Paul II. I'll certainly will be praying for such...
