The Rapture

god didnt own slaves, unless you mean mankind as a whole. The qualities I attributed to god were things done "by his hand" either through divine mandate ( an angel swoops down, stamps "God was here" on someones forehead with a flaming sword, kills their baby and is off), direct action: flood, firestorms, plagues etc, or are from personal and direct conversation with god by people whom adherents of the religion take their cues. Im not referring to the actions done by people outside of the bible. Thats their own lookout.

So you believe these things happened enough to insult the diety and the religion but don't believe in god... nice paradox you've crafted for yourself.

So.... where's your gripe?

If the bible's untrue in your eyes then that stuff never happened.

The gripe is that people who believe it did happen try to use it to justify making it happen again. I.E. the ORIGINAL POST (OMG). A guy using leviticus and OT morality to attack shaidalyns friend's sexual preference.

The only issue i have with this is it's not an entirely fair and accurate representation of the christian god.

Sure, fire/wrath all that nonsense; but where are people like you when other folks want to sight the positive things done by god and in his/her/it's name?

I dont generally care about cars that are not on fire. If snoop biggy smalls wants to dedicate his grammy for "pimpin the phat ho's" to jesus, that doesnt get nearly as much of my give-a-damn as someone picketing a homosexual's funeral for having the bad taste to get killed by homophobes.

Let me try and restate that, my wording was wrong.

Whenever a topic comes up like this or the post that originated this thread there's a multitude of voices who love to do nothing more than point out the shortcomings, failings, and negativity in the bible as it relates to god.

This is a completely innaccurate depiction and only serves the purpose of furthering the agenda of the person playing that role in the conversation. While these things did occur in the bible there were many other things that occurred and were quite beneficial to mankind both by the hand of god and through the actions of man, it just seems too one-sided.

The attrocities of man far outweigh those reported of god, by your logic we're all dicks by association, even yourself.

and anyway, noone references the OT god as theirs anymore, just the NT jesus. Its too bad that the OT teaches hate and the NT love instead of the other way around.

God's a sign of the times.

OT = harsh ancient life.

NT = modern ideal of don't be a douchebag.

I don't think saying the OT "teaches" hate is fair. It certainly puts emphasis on not fucking around with god and all but that's all part of the humbling thyself thing. 'Course it's all open to interpretation.

wow fast post.

Its not innaccurate, its just not unbiased. The OT is balanced somewhat by the NT, and that has good parts if people choose to use them. The problem is they choose to overlook "love thy fellow man" in favor of "god hates homosexuals" (kinda wish we could get off that example but its the OP so when-in-rome) whenever they like. The overlooking of the entire character of god in the OT and his behavior and attitudes upon the appearance of jesus is something I dont understand at all. Nor the attitude of followers who claim christianity, but revert to old testament morality when they want to attack others. Be a christian, fine. But if youre going to take jesus's martyrdom and follow his road, dont take sidetrips back to when the road wasnt paved to pick up a rock to throw at people on the way.

whoops missed the end bit. god destroyed the world, entire civilizations and is going to (purportedly) destroy it again saving only 144,000 and damning the rest to eternal pain and suffering.

Youd be hard pressed to convince me that man has done anything to outweigh that.

That's pretty much her MO.

To the OP... holy shit the bible says "its gonna happen sometime and nobody knows when" - i could have figured that one out without knowing my ass from my elbow. Seems kind of like those bullshit fortune tellers to me- maybe even to the level of that edwards crossing over guy. Might as well go ask a magic eight ball for answers over a few thousand year old book.

Fighting over fictional books and fairy tale characters seems pointless to me, what's the point ladies and gents?

Those crazy jerks were in my town last year when a local soldier died. Fortunately, a group of Hell's Angels retires chased them off and kept a security ring around the funeral to keep the protesters out and drowned out the protester's loudspeakers with their bikes. Quite an odd turn of event. How she can seriously believe any of that is disturbing.

He's considered "jealous" because He's the "real" God and a bunch of people created their own gods instead.

I always picture the Christian god sitting around with Zeus, Thor, Ra, Quetzalcoatl, Athena, Osiris, Bathala, Tsai Chen and a bunch of others and saying "I win, folks. Pay up."

As for the Rapture, that's a fairly recent interpretation of Biblical verses.

Blasphemy isn't really a "sign of the times." There has been and always will be people who just don't believe in gods and can't take them seriously.

My number one problem with any religion is that if you choose to believe in that religion you are choosing to judge that everyone else in the world is wrong and will suffer a punishment for it.

I don't believe in god... so this makes me a bad person and I shouldn't be allowed to enjoy the sun in the same way a christian would?

People say all the time how sad it must be to not believe in anything, I find it more sad to believe in the damnation of innocent people for simply not believing in my point of view.
