I dunno how any Red Mage manages to melee at all...I did it for shits and giggles in my party last night for one fight, just to laugh at it...Everytime I cast an enfeeble, a different equip is swapped in....Wind Staff on Gravity, then Rose Wand+1 on Paralyze, Earth Staff on Slow, Fire Staff on MB(Doing Fusion)....How the hell do you melee? I hit the mob with at least 5 different weapons that fight lol.

I meleed in parties that would let me to get my sword from 172 to 175. I encountered the same problem. All i did was suck it up and make sure all me enfeebs were casted before i went in. Then if one wore off i'd recast it then manualy switch back to my sword. I also would switch into my Rdm/brd JSE for the Acc bonus. After the fight i'd switch back to my casting equipment and repeat.

macro make it alittle easyer

Typically the only time when RDM meleeing bothers me is when they mob you're fighting has an AoE that the RDM doesn't need to me in. It's simply a waste of mp that would be better spend elsewhere. That and they need to be performing their job flawlessly, like I do mine :P

It maybe be because of your sub. BLM and WHM and SMN all have staff skill. But I'm not sure, I just heard that.

Yeah, I know you get Staff Skill from subs, but I'm pretty positive Red Mage doesn't have growth in it, so you'll be stuck at a subbed skill level.

Ofcourse, RDM would be hella bitchin if they had access to staff. Spirit Taker.

Wow... Meleeing with a staff?

Maybe he missed the memo, but red mages do not get staff skill.
we do, its just a really really really low class of it lol. If we didn't have any skill we couldn't use staff WSs but we can :p

Correction, yes we do have a "staff skill", but we can't go out and level staff. We have to rely on other jobs to level it for RDM use. It's kinda like H2H. We will always see it because there are H2H weapons RDM can use but we can never level it without another job's help.

Tuck-style swords are BLM equipable. Go figure. :P

with blm sub rdm get a 109 staff capped at 75 105 with whm sub

blm with pld sub get a 114 sword

You're shittin me... there goes 2 months down the drain.

Well my point about macros changing my equip was more to say, you cannot effectively do your job as RDM and TP at the same time..And with our craptastic RDM damage, I can imagine the only good damage we would produce is with a WS.

I'll admit it was fun outdamaging WAR in the dunes with my sword, but let's face it...RDM melee is just worthless once you start fighting mobs that take some level of skill to take down efficiently.

RDM can melee too, only if they can muti-tasked

cuz meleeing making rdm lose focus on refreshing mage and enfledable the mob

but if they can't handle refrest itself, they can't melee then.. makes it worst

It's also pretty futile. Anything that isn't A or B class growth really shows it's wear after level 60, when A gains 5 levels a level, B gaines 4, and C gains 3.

The ratio of damage to Mob TP, and the fact that if a RDM wants to do significant damage, they must sacrifice enfeebling strength, says that RDM mellee is always going to hurt a parties efficiency against ITs...

.... no matter how much they can cast, quantity is seriously not the main issue...

I was in a party with a melee red mage the other day and it was absolutely terrible. We were fighting helm beetles in CN (I was WHM54) so there was no real issue with damaging AoEs. The problem was that the red mage in question, couldn't melee without hurting the party. He would debuff, refresh and then run in and start hitting the beetle around (not waiting to recast any resisted enfeebs). On top of that he would haste himself so that the could hit for 5 damage points more often

More often than not, he would end a battle with ~20-50mp, just enough to refresh himself and then rest (the blm and I went refresh-less). I realise that rdms have refresh and convert at their disposal, but that doesn't mean that they can throw away mp. It would've been far more efficient if he had rested after finishing his cycle, recovered some mp and then fill in where he was needed (whether it be healing, MBing or recasting refresh/enfeebs etc...), rather than swinging his sword about. Needless to say we didn't get past chain #2 at all. What made this worse (for me) was that I was left to do all the healing. We had a nin tank, our blm was subbing smn (o, O another rant all together) AND this rdm was throwing away mp without resting. With healing, erasing, hasting, curing poison, regen-ing and trying to cover any resisted enfeebs, this was difficult.

I think that rdm melee-ing should be left in static or soloing situations (or at least stop after elemental staves come into play). Next pick-up party I find with a Melee RDM shall soon find themselves waiting for a WHM replacement. IMO people who want a job that can hit things and cast shiny magic, should pick up drk or something or at least organise a static for themselves... Then again maybe I just haven't met a competent RDM that can melee yet > ,>

Maybe your all just stuck on how you think everything should be played and your little brains can't comprehend that other people like different things. I don't mind how other people play their jobs, the only thing that pisses me off is if it ends in mass deaths. If it doesn't then it's all good. All I hear is how it's not 7k exp and hour or all your doing is giving the mob tp or if you want to melee be a DRG or SAM....blah blah fuckity blah. Maybe if people helped those people who like to do it by showing them good macros to use for that so that they can still switch targets while being locked onto another mob, or telling them how to set up a refresh cycle(maybe they just don't get that concept you know), brb I'll add more in a bit gotta do stuff...damn army

No...
It's a Red Mage's job to Sleep adds. It's Enfeebling Magic, last time I checked, RDM had best enfeebling in the game. Please correct me if I am wrong. It's not a cookie-cutter idea.

If there is no Red Mage, it's the Black Mage's job. No BLM? Then pick: BRD, SMN, WHM (leaving out DRK because they are supposed to melee ;)) But Red Mage will always be first.

Let the RDM melee, but when it brings danger to the party, he/she shouldn't be meleeing.

Do you think a party at higher levels will expect me, a WHM, with 190 Enfeebling, to enfeeble a mob while having the RDM heal them, with 130 Healing? No, I don't think so.

Did this party end up in mass death because he meleed? Pretty much, yeah. It could have been easily avoided. It's not hard to see when a mob aggros, especially when you have sound effects turned up and you are not meleeing and thus don't have the music turned on.

if the rdm has time to melee, they obviously arent doing what they should. i personally dont care what people do with their chars if everything is going smooth, however, when a rdm isnt doing anything else, they could be resting up with a drk staff to regain mp used. obviously u cant do this if your meleeing can u.
also, if you are in an area where you need to sleep an add, you cant see everything that is going on if your meleeing and you run a higher risk of getting aoe dmg
