Okay I'm a mage, always played a mage and really don't know how to play anything other than a mage. But i'm also a poor mage-dirt poor and need to make some cash! So here I am leveling my theif to 15 for treasure hunter....and I'm completely lost! Sweet merciful crap - I've hit level 7 like 5 times now...I don't even know what I should be subbing or what kind of weapon I should be using, it makes me want to eat my own eyes!

I'm leveling in the Ronfaure for the dark crystal drops from the Funguars so any pointers for a lowly Tarutaru?

PS: I"m getting really worried about hitting the Dunes too, I'm so scard of being an embarassing addition to a party! Heeeewwwwppp meeeeeee!

In the lower level's as a THF don't use a dagger. Get a one handed sword and a shield to help with your defense. There isn't much as way as amor goes of THF's at those lvl's either. Once you get to 15 you get sneak attack as well as treasure hunter. Good luck and have fun! :D

Any suggestions on a subjob? I've heard a monk is good....? I've got all but the SAM/DRK unlocked.

Yeah monk is a very popular subjob choice. In that case you would use hand to hand and your damage would not be as horrible as it would be with a dagger.

Yes it is a long arduous route...feel like im doing it all over again with NIN in fact...My suggestion is fight easy prey. Even at level 7 they wont do too much damage and its better than fighting a DC and getting your butt whooped or having loads of downtime. You can easily get about 200 exp in the time it would take you to get 150 fight DC's. You also get more drops and such. Yes it blows, but you wont be hitting valkurm till about 12 and even then, most people realize a thief does crap damage so i recommend taking up bow and arrow. It will really improve your output and get you an invite or two more.

Just my experience.

Mithkabobs. In generous and hearty servings.
my thf would not have made it to 15 if not for those.
and though its not for everyone, i soloed my thf to 15 and only went as far as the fort in geshelba.
(my thoughts on taking a thf to the dunes were, hmm, dunes...thf.....bad dunes pts and many many hours as a thf.....SOLO!)

I'm elvaan so this might not work as good for you. I leveled my mnk to 6 in 2hrs, then used my mnk as a sub so my hand to hand was strong, saved up my tp for bad situations, used some mithkabobs, and the soloing is a cake walk filled with farming. =)

As much as I hate the dunes, I have to be honest and say that I had no problems leveling up my THF there. For subs, I'd probably go with MNK or WAR.

Lok - THF/WAR (25/12)

As a taru, I found the thief pre-15 one of the most annoying jobs ever. It's sooo embarassing levelling in the maze and hitting for zero. I basically ended up soloing until 13-14 and then I started getting some invites. I stopped at 15 since I basically wanted it for Treasure Hunter.

But I subbed Ranger because then I could range attack which does more damage than my weapons ever could. Using kabobs also helps too since we do crap damage in the first place.

Sabia, THF was the first job I'd picked up even before RDM on my wittle taru... I stopped when I hit level 5 for a month or so. Dying a lot can discourage a taru! I returned with a new flair, and experience with the game... I ate loads of grilled hair (my diet staple at that point in the game), bought a good bow, lots of arrows, and soloed it up to 13.
I went to Valkurm and partied with 5 of my RL friends which shot me up to 15. As for dagger, try leveling it with RDM or something in the meantime (which is what I'd done). Swords will hit for more damage at your level and the delay and skill gap isn't that great. You'll still hit as often as anyone else, maybe more so! H2H I don't have -any- experience with as a THF/MNK... good luck and dont' lose hope! YOU can make it happen! ^^b

I'd just like to thank everyone for their help so far,
I hit level 9 last night, time to keep grinding it to 15....

Sabia, you BETTER NOT quit on me! Keep going with THF (at least 15) or I'll be very /disgusted with your mental strength. XD j/k of course. But hit 15. Do it... do it.. *chants*

Haha! I can't afford to quit...Litteraly! I Needs this theif sub to get my measly little taru arse into some Astral rings ^^

I know a good way to get you to 15....i can power level your skinny lil taru bum ^_~

For anyone lvling thf, here is wat i suggest...

Weapon: Sword [fast blade is 2x attack, similar to viperbite] // H2h [Combo is 3x dmg.. which is actually better than viperbite] or bow [your ranged attack dmg will be very good until around lvl 10]

SJ: Monk / war / Whm / ranger

Target: depending on ur SJ..
-mnk you can go after harder cons, your target will mostly be skele or crawlers..
-whm or war sub wtih sword your target would be mandragora, or rabbits
-ranger <actually my SJ of choice if you only want to lvl to 15> target is worms in east ronfare, king ramp, la thiene, or maze of shak

Always carry mithkabobs, and if you can afford it or can make it.. pamana al luit or selbina milk..

THF was my 1st job and I took it all the way to 18 with no subj-I didn't even realize how hard I had it- Till I started leveling my war sub... Ouch!

I never had ANY problems getting invites in the dunes. Yes, I truly believe that the dunes = hell. One thing that I can say- Be prepared to pull! As a THF people will expect you to. I used the scimitar, a shield, and had the self bow +1 for pulling. Yes, yes you won't do much damage, but ppl don't really notice or say anything. Use food, keep your armor up to date. (I know you don't have to be told that).

Solo to 15 is an option, but very time consuming. You won't have to deal with all of the dunes nonsense, but good god it's slow.

Good luck!
