Last night my LS helped me, and a few others get ZM-4- ZM-13 so that we could get Sky access. And after a grueling 8hrs we finally got everything done. So I travel back to the Hall of the Gods so I can see a few more cut scenes and finally get access to Tu’lia, and right as I set my Tarutaru foot in Tu’lia everything goes to hell in a hand basket. Everything slows down to a snail’s pace and eventually my game just freezes up!! So I just shut everything down and I try logging in again, and the same thing happens. The weird thing is that when I log in to my mule characters, everything works fine and my game runs smoothly, but every time I log into my main character who Is still in Ru’ann Gardens (sp)? My game freezes up again. This is so frustrating considering all I went through just be able to see this place and now I can’t even play as my main anymore. Does anybody here know what could be causing this? Has something like this happened to someone else on the boards? If so, how did you resolve this? Please help!!!

Probably corrupt files for the sky zone since it is isolated to that one area. Try doing a file check and if that detects anything reinstall. Are you on ps2 or pc?

maybe some of your RoZ files didn't get loaded properly. i dunno just a guess. worst thing you might have to do is reinstall it. but i'm not for certain at all

I'm on a PC, how do I do a File Check? (I"m stupid)

Juando,

Sorry to hear of your problem here. I would suggest a full install and updates as a last measure, but for now I will walk you through a safe way to reinitialize your -main- character.

I will assume you are running Final Fantasy on a PC so firstly, is backing up the right data - in this case, your character data. Not only your main one but all of them. This data can be located at the following location from your Final Fantasy folder:

FINAL FANTASY XI\USER\

Within this folder you will find data folders for all your seperate characters (known as Content IDs) you have within Final Fantasy. Make a copy of all these folders to somewhere you feel is safe, such as "My Documents" for example.

Once you have sucessfully made copies of your character data, I will go onto explain that the folders are typically identified in order of creation. They may look like randomized alpha-numericals but they are actually listed in order of character creation - the first one being your main character and storing macros and message data therein*.

* If you find that the first folder listed in alphabetical order does not seem to compliment your character in terms of content, check the other folders. I would assume your main character would have a lot more data files and specifically macro sets than the others. You can also check the dates of the files to be sure.

You can safely delete your character folder now that you have safely backed it up. Do not worry, your character WILL NOT be perminantly deleted as a lot of your character data is stored on the PlayOnline registration servers.

Once your have deleted the folder, start up the PlayOnline Viewer and enter Final Fantasy as you normally would. Once into Final Fantasy, you will see all your characters in the character selection area.

When you select your main character, a new character (Content ID) folder will be created with default settings and storage data. Furthermore, you will be provided with the default macro configurations provided by Final Fantasy. I will go into how to recover your customized macros shortly.

Once you spawn in the area you last logged out of, don't make any adjustments to your setting just yet. Check that you are not experiencing any problem with movement or anything you experienced before.

If everything is okay, log out and exit the PlayOnline Viewer safely.

Next, to recover your customized macros (should you have any), navigate to the backup folder of the character folder you made earlier. Therein, you will see many files much of which may or may not bare any meaning, however, your macros are contained within a set of DAT files usually labled with "MRC" within the name. Simply copy all of these DAT files and paste them into your fresh folder Final Fantasy has recreated for you. Be sure to also copy the MRC.SYS file too as this is part of the macro system - you may overwrite the MRC~ files that may already sit within your new character folder as they are only containing default data.

Once you have completed that, log back into Final Fantasy and check your macros are displayed correctly. At the same time, check that everything is working alright for you and that you are not experiencing any problem.

If everything appears to be okay, go ahead and adjust your settings freely. This new configuration data will be stored in the new character folder.

If this does not work for you, I would then go onto attempting a reinstall of PlayOnline Viewer and Final Fantasy but make sure to make a copy of your macro files as they would not really affect the performance of playability for you.

If after this point, you still experience problem, I would examine your computer system. The problem may lay with a software or hardware fault or confliction or may even simply be configuration of your hardware.

I hope my advice helps you, but please let us/me know how you get on.

Best of luck,

Uhm, all your data is stored on the SE's servers. The only thing you are copying is system config settings, playonline login information, macros, and map markers.

While your instructions are well detailed Majestic, the only thing your suggestion does is reset those settings that are saved locally. You are also then restoring the exact same settings he had before. Short of having your system settings too high for your comp to handle (eg: trying to run at 1600x1200 resolution on a 5 year old machine), it is not going to cause the isolated problems he is expereincing. If I had to guess, I would say some of the graphics data for that zone got corrupted and is causing a graphics leak. This would cause massive resources to be consumed until system crash occurs.

To perform a file check, start up playonline, but do not login. On the main menu before logging into playonline you should see an option for file check. It will have options to check the files in playonline, ffxi, or tetra master. Ffxi being obviously the one you want, run that. It should take a bit to scan. If it finds any corrupted files, you will definitly want to reinstall ffxi. Incidently, if you have done any DAT file swaps you will also get those reported as corrupted but I doubt you have done any of that. Even if it doesn't report any corrupted files, I would recommend reinstalling. If you know a friend who also has ffxi, you might try using his rise of zilart expansion disc (labeled disc 4) since yours might have a defect, not necessarily a visible scratch though.

If you really want to avoid reinstalling, you might try replacing the ru an gardnes DAT file with someone elses that you know is good. Ru an Garden's DAT file is located in FINAL FANTASY XI\ROM2\12\107.DAT If you can get that file from someone else, try replacing it and see if that solves your problem.

Well pointed out Rones and very true also. The advice I provided is only aimed at the content ID data folder, though the advice I provided is based on a solution to a problem I encountered myself which worked out for me.

Rones and indeed others are also correct in suggesting corrupt files and using the File Checking system. It is well worth taking this step too before considering a reinstall and update of all files.

Kind regards,
