According the US Secret Service, the US now has a new definition of terrorism:

Any harmfull act against Americans by foriegners

I found this out the hard way from the local branch of the USSS, you see,
my husband and I have been victimized by internet scammers who work out of Nigeria.
We are by no-means stupid people (although we sure feel it now). heres how it went down:

My husband has '93 honda civic that is 1/2 way to be a lethal street machine.
NOS, air intake, rebuilt engine, exhaust etc etc. He used to call the damn thing "sweetheart" for christsakes ! Well, we decided a while back that its a better idea to sell the car (which sits in our garage for a year now) and put that money towards paying it off and taking care of some much needed things in our home, like building rooms for our older children in our basement etc. etc.
We had this car listed on cars.com for around 8 months. A few bites here and there but nothing solid. Then about 3 weeks ago, we get an offer from
a buyer in London who wants to buy and ship this car. We have no reason to doubt these people because of 2 things:

1)The car was not going anyway until full, cleared payment was made.
2) Payment was in the form of a cashier's check, and funds not touched until cleared by the bank and sit for at least 3 days.

So, we are sent a cashiers check for 11,200. The car amount was 6k and the other 5.2k was for shipping the vehicle. We let this money sit, after clearing and being deposited for 8 days before we sent out the shipping fees. 24 hours later, our bank account was 5k in the RED!

And now our bank is telling us we frauded them and taking legal action.
All accounts frozen and we are left penniless :(
Apparently the check was counterfiet, yet the bank checked it, cleared it, and the funds sat for 8 days.
All contact with the bank (USbank) has been met with the complete inability on their part to explain why they cleared it in the first place.
Everyone from branch managers to regional managers give us the run-around on this topic.

We contacted a good lawyer, and he tells us the bank is more than likely covering themselves for making a mistake by taking it out on the little guy, us.
Are we wrong in wondering why the bank would clear a counterfiet check
and not find anything wrong with this fact until suddenly we send shipping fees and the check gets pulled?

We still have the car, and are scrambling furiously to sell it to recoup a crippling loss.

I post this embarrasing story to raise awareness amongst friends. This is a fate I dont even wish on my worst of enemies, and hope that by reading this, some of you may avoid being ruined.

As of now, we dont know whats cleared, and whats coming back. Mortgages, utilities, etc, etc may come pouring back in any day now :(
My time in Vana'Diel is also in question now, for now that our accounts are fucked, we have no way to pay for even lifes little, oft taken for granted luxuries, let alone its necessities.

So, If I seem a little off in-game, or dont get to a /tell for a while, or disappear altogether, please dont take it the wrong way :)

Good luck to you all, and please be very carefull who you deal with in this world, for sometimes even a friend can slice your throat in your sleep.

Ill send you $5. Think about it. 1000 send $5 and huzzah, no more problems :D

I wish you the best of luck on this matter, and a speedy resolution. Please keep us informed if there is anything we can do to assist.

Thank you all for your kind words :)

It does help to know that the people I see in game and here on the boards are just that, people. Real people just like myself and not just characters in a video game.
And to answer Chpals question, that info comes from USSS. Apparently over the last year, Nigeria is playing host to a biblical plague of scam artists and frauding. And this is just another of thier textbook scams.

They do everything from forging official government documents promising millions of dollars in "surplus" funds, to their newest one, the "cashiers check" debacle.

Apparently over the last year, between the US and Canada, some 40+million dollars have been scammed through Nigeria by preying on hard working, honest Joe Everyman/Woman.

These people are genuises at what they do, everything from cell phone
purchases on stolen account #'s to completely drained bank accounts.

The USSS says that these crimes stem from their suffering economy,
lack of decent law enforcement, and the overall hate for the west under the primitive belief that our streets are paved in gold, and that we are all rich. Another theory is that they view themselves as self-serving "Robin Hoods" who believe they are stealing from greedy, rich foriegners and that their crime hurts no-one because of it.

Nothing could be further from the truth..................................

/hugs asiamise tightly

I am so sorry, girlie! Do not feel stupid AT ALL - people normally accept cashiers checks because YOU CAN TRUST THEM - treat them as cash. and your bank is shady...this is SO Not your fault.

I hope everything works out for you!!! Please keep us updated!

grrrrr.....the same thing almost happened to my mother, but we caught it in time and no harm done. I forget who she contacted in the US government, but im pretty sure they took care of it the best they could. i'm really sorry to hear this happened to you, and i hope all is revolved quickly. I hate to see things like this happen....it's fookin absurd..

Sorry to hear about this Asiamise, I would suggest to actually get a lawyer to take action against the bank, but you would have to find one that is willing to do the work and get paid when you get paid.

Thank you all for your concern :) it has helped me and my husband get through this ^^ as of today, we are still financially snowed :( however, we have been able to catch up on most of the returned expenses and still able to maintain a normal level of dignity. I have a friend who was gracious enough to let me use her credit card to keep mine and Chippie's account going on FFXI so at least we have our escape ^^

The bank looks like its going to drop the fraud thing and the 5k debt, however we are still left with the catchup process and the slow rebuild :(

Im a girl so I worry obsessively, but everyday gets just a little better, and the support we've gotten here and in-game from kind QCDN'ers has helped us to see light at the end of a very dark tunnel.
My families thanx to the kind souls who offered their condolences and positive words.
Who would have thought a video game can bring about such a powerfull
sense of community, in a world that seems to loose that same sense more and more every day.

Edit: Chippie doesnt come to these boards anymore, and he knows little to nothing of this. One of our strategies to maintain normalcy was to keep everything moving at about the same pace as before the scam. We figured the best way to do that was to keep the kids in the dark and not loose the little things in life we tend to take for granted.

Hi Asia! We just met, basically.

That is insane. Don't feel stupid at all, and the bank should have never cleared the check. I don't how you're still in the red if the bank is dropping the debt, but at any rate, best of luck to you :) .
