TV The Wire

The Wire is one of my favorite shows on TV at the moment, honestly i love everything about it and with the 5th and final season less than a month away from it's UK DVD release i thought i'd start a thread and see if anyone else watches.

The first time i watched the pilot episode i wasn't impressed, got bored before the end of the first disc (I was watching on dvd as i hadn't seen it on TV) but my friend encouraged me to stick with it, so i gave it another go a couple of months later. The second time i payed more attention to the characters and what was going on, and i was hooked, i watched most of the first series in a matter of days, and have since watched seasons 2~4 in the past few months absolutly loved them all, although i think my favorite season had to be 2 (or possibly 3 they're both awesome xD).

My friend has already seen season 5 and promises me it's the best yet, but i'm quite enjoying the anticipation of waiting, so if any of you enjoy this great show as much as i do or want to discuss any of the previous episodes post away.

Also name your favorite character if you can, i think mine would have to be 'Bubbles' or Omar, but honestly, i love them all too much to choose lol.

I love The Wire. I'd heard so much about it that I started getting the discs through NetFlix and quickly got hooked. Your friend wasn't kidding about the fifth season being awesome; I was particularly interested in that one, since it dealt with the newspaper industry and that's what I do for a living.

My favorite character is Omar. Every time he pops up on the screen, he's a joy. The actor had a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance in The Incredible Hulk near the end when Hulk fights the Abomination.

I've noticed alot of the cast playing minor roles in major films this year, the film by Ben & Casey Afleck about child abduction (i forget the name) had several of them in it, i've not seen it personally but have heard very different opinions of it from several people.

Stringer Bell was in that 'Prom Night' or whatever it was called aswell, about a group of teens getting trapped in a hotel and killed one at a time*. These aren't films i'm really interested in (as you can probably tell) but they were big budget films regardless and i really hope to see more of the actors from The Wire become successful because there's some real talent involved. For example; I can't think of another show i've seen that had better child actors (season 4) they really impressed me.

*I've seen several other films with these actors, normally in smaller roles, but i honestly can't think of any right now. It's a friday, my mind is already down the pub which makes it hard to concentrate, guess it's time for my body to follow lol.

The Wire isn't going to appeal to everyone because of its deliberate pacing and how each season plays out like one long novel instead of a collection of self-contained episodes, but television really doesn't get much better for the people who can stick with it. The cast was great, the characters were so well drawn out they felt like actual people and the writing was perfect and with a point to make.

My favorite season was the fourth, where they focused on the failing education system and how people like the corner kids you met in the previous seasons come to be. All the seasons are good though - with two, three and four being the standouts.

I don't think I can pick just one favorite character, but the names that come to mind the quickest are Omar, Bunk, McNulty, Stringer Bell, Bubbles and Marlow. Freamon and Pryzbylewski as well.
