Combat in XII is almost exactly like past FF's, there's a time bar, you select actions to do then they execute when the bar is full, only difference is you can move around during battles, no random fights, etc. Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there. I felt FF needed a change, and XII looks to deliver that. Just because you like old repeated battle systems which almost all RPG's use, doesn't mean everybody does. I feel they do their job, but if I wanted a series that didn't evolve, I'd play Dragon Quest instead of FF, although I do play both, and DQ has it's props, DQ8 definitely shows its age, I'd rather FF evolves, and the battles in XII are the next step. Sure DQ8 was a massive hit in Japan, but in the States, the sales were sub-par, not explosive, but decent. And obviously FF isn't done, because SE shipped 2mil units alone of XII to Japan release day, and mind you they sold, and it will do well when it releases in the States. I've seen the same whiney bitch facade on Gamefaqs boards, and the majority of the people changed their tune and they go, "oh this isn't so different from past FF's" after they got their import and started playing. And if the battle's never evolved, we wouldn't be playing FFXI, and XII is like FFXI Offline, so it's really not that much of a departure from FF.
If you don't buy it, too bad, you'll just be missing out on a great game.
