Ive met many people have had this problem of no you cant go on my comp your going to fuck somthing up or your going to get a virus. I got a friend who feels this way. Was talking and hes like I scan my comp every 3 hours. I said to him i scan my comp from 2months to a year...

Hes afraid of trackers useing his passwords and shit like that. I say why the hell you keep personal shit on your comp. I have nothin even worth being tracked on my comp if i do it can probably tracked to a compleltly different comp.

Why the hell are you so fucking scared over your comp when you can erase ever piece of shit program you got on your comp and reinstall and have a better faster comp. Sure it takes a while but get over it you are waisting time much fucking time when you have more things to do and watch your comp erase itself.

I went to his house hes got like 200+ gigs on his comp and he hasnt use over 10 and im just standing there thinking what the fuck use your comp for its real purpose. Hes got 5 icons on his desk top and almost no programs. So i go on the net to look for somthin and he comes in and hes like "I told you not to do that is going to install bad stuff on my comp" ITS NOT FUCKING GOING TO INSTALL ANYTHING ON YOUR COMP THE WORSE FUCKING THING IT CAN DO TO YOUR FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT COMP IS SLOW IT DOWN!!!!!!!

Now to get on to hacking.... Ok no ones going to hack your comp if you arent hiding anything important or of any use. Why the hell would a hacker want to hack your piece of shit comp. The least thing they Could do is take your credit card number if your stupid enough to put it in a folder or somthing.

Alright im done if you want to add to annoying people who do this go ahead. I just had to get that out.

the reason people are scared of hackers and shit is because the computer is their life. without it they will die( or so they think). i used to be like that, but then i said wait a minute. i can go on without a comp. so if ya wanna hack it feel free. i got shit on here anyways lol.

there are a few types of people that hack....those that go for the big businesses for monetary reasons and kids that attack computers just for fun to cause problems. the first example will never happen to him, the second example may. however, he would have to be stupid to open an email or download a file from an email, etc etc to get a backdoor program to allow a hacker access to the pc.
i look at it this way, you want to fuck with my pc, thats fine...ill just copy the ffxi file to my other hd and clear the main HD off and reinstall. hell i got one hell of a doozie virus on mine atm. changes the IE homepage to something off the wall. i fixed that by switching to firefox

I know this isn’t your point, but just to make you aware of it; it’s kind of hard to use any kind of financial or tax software with out putting sensitive information on your computer, but the likely hood of being directly targeted by a hacker is still pretty slim to warrant extreme security.

I think the average person is more scared because they don't understand computers very well and just hear a lot of "OMG IF YOU GET A VIRUS IT WILL STEAL YOUR SSN AND CREDIT CARD NUMBER AND YOUR CHILDREN AND ORDER PORN AND MAIL ORDER BRIDES AND PAY FOR DRUG CARTELS AND LAUNCH NUKES!!!" Meh.

(and of course there's the other extreme, the people who will install anything, open any attachments, etc. etc. etc.)

To ultraseven: give this a try: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

IMO yes it is true that alot of people do go overboard in their quest to protect thier privacy, but on the same note...... alot of people should be more careful......

ITS NOT FUCKING GOING TO INSTALL ANYTHING ON YOUR COMP THE WORSE FUCKING THING IT CAN DO TO YOUR FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT COMP IS SLOW IT DOWN!!!!!!!

Actually merely surfing the web can install all sorts of programs and stuff that can cause major slowdowns all the way to motherboard bios rewrites (meaning bye bye computer).
Not that this should make you paranoid, but it IS possible.

I use firefox, worst thing ive got from that is a few tracker cookies, and to solve that I just empty my cookies folder (6 months since last scan)

ever since I installed firefox I have had 0 spyware/trojan/virus.

another good piece of info is that viruses can be bound to pictures. all it really takes is to go to a website with a picture that contains a virus and there ya go. however what anesly said is very true. people that dont know and understand alot about computers are the ones that are paranoid. as far as they know, hackers will hack them just because

Hey, I dont blame oraga's friend at all. I dont know what you were doing, but it drives me NUTS when people come over, use my computer, and before I know it, I have pop-ups galore. You want to check the weather? Go to weather.com, please dont download weatherbug and all the POS GAIN software that comes with it! You "need" to use ICQ? Go home then.

LOL, good point. I was talking more about how people are about using their own computers. There's a couple of people I know who know what they're doing and I'd let them use my machine unsupervised. There are a few others I'd let on on occasion but not without keeping an eye on them. Other than that, you're out of luck.

Also, it's not just about erasing "every piece of shit program you got on your comp and reinstall and have a better faster comp." People keep information that's important to them on their computers, whether it's personal or work-related or whatever. So it's not "just" time (but time is valuable too).

Plus, it could take you like, minutes to start building your porn collection back up.

Wish my brother was careful like your friend.....brother always hops on my computer behind my back (though I continually tell him the other computer in the house is better..)
So riddled with viruses I crash 4/5 times try to signon to the internet and there's always these nasty porn avi's saved right on the desktop......

Well I'll let people use my computer on the basis of the state of theirs.

This one friend I'd lent my laptop for a week after his power supply for his burnt out (He bought a used one and his battery and power were in th email from ebay) and it came back in perfect shape. His desktop and laptop are ince and tidy.

This other friend, I had brought my laptop to his house once to finish reading something I had downloaded for a class and what do you know, i leave it shutdown and unsupervised(and you need password to login) I come back to it an hour later and one of the rubber piece from under the case is missing and the others are all worm out. Some one had been dragging is on a table or something instead of lifting and then moving it. Anyways, whenever i forget shit at his house I always get it back broken, magazines, CDs, DVDs, Headphones once. Great people hang out there btu dont give any shit about people's property. And this guy's computer is the most fucked up i ever seen I'm always fixing it for him since he doesn't understand the intricacies of it. The on time i actually left my laptop on and logged in (LAN party, fell asleep) I wake up to find someone playing Counter-Strike on it but the next day im getting random pop ups and shit like that i had to waste a whole day getting a clean system again.

These things can be backed up onto a disc and can easly be moved to another comp just make sure it wasnt that program that got hacked.

I could hack any and every single one of you. Would I? No.

Would very few if anyone bother to hack a average person with little to no important information? No.

Should you be paranoid? No.

Can you get viruses and trojans from surfing the web? Yes.

Can you remove them by scanning your computer once a month? Yes.

Will they cause permanent damage to your computer? Some, but 95% of trojans/viruses are usually just adware that slows your computer down and mabye adds popups/porn.

Should you be cautious about where you go on the net? Yes, but there's no reason to be paranoid because if the site in question could harm your computer 99% of anti viruses would let you know that it could be harmful. Heck, even IE blocks some sites like this.

This follows the proverb "You judge a carpenter by his tools". Also a good metaphor for this game (generally speaking), and life. :)

I never let people use my computer. Since I use it for my work, I cannot afford to have someone make a catastrophic mistake, even if it is an honest one. Need to check the weather? Go turn on the Weather Channel, I mead they have the weather every 10 minutes for God's sake.

good news guys, my computer and me just had twins.

Please forgive the controdiction, but this is a security misconception. Your computer may be cracked for and number of reasons, without a thought given to the data on it. You may be used as a Mail relay for SPAMers, made into a zombie for DOSers (Denial of Service), or you may just be the target of a bored script kiddie.

Be a good citizen of the Internet, surf safely.

That is a pretty broad statement, not knowing peoples network configurations. If you can, then you should go to work for RSA, they need all the help they can get.
