As some of you may be aware, a broken glass stair from the 5th ave. apple store was recently put up for auction on ebay. (The backstory on this item can be found if you click here). The person's starting price for this *broken* stair was $200.00. Well, the auction is now over, and the final bid for this broken glass stair was $9,950.00. (check here for proof if you need it)

My question to you is this: Why do you think somebody would pay this much for a broken glass stair? Feel free to throw in your own thoughts, but here's the best guesses I've seen so far:

1) Huge apple fan boy, must have all things apple
2) The engineering behind this glass stair is supposed to be on the advanced side, so perhaps somebody wants to take a look at a "cross section" of it to try and replicate it.
3) The stair represents an investment. It sells for just under 10k now, what will it sell for in 30 years? Once the store is closed?

just rediculous. they act as if its a relic from the titanic.

I think some people have too much money. I mean c'mon.

I'm unsure what the stairs looked like in full but I think I have a good idea based on the look of that stair. It may have been a bit of an engineering feat, but I still think people have more money than perhaps they should.

What good is that even as a souvenir? Personally I think it's just going to collect dust.

A comment was made on the second link that the story could have been fabricated just to increase the 'value' of the stair which to me doesn't sound at all far fetched.

A good point, agreed.

I think this is what it looked like:

I think he has every right to it, and some people have too much disposable income.
If it is just a ruse to raise the price, good on him. I wouldn't have thought of it.

Although the reasoning behind the purchase of the broken stair may not be readily apparent, we conducted exhaustive research and analysis of said stair before having our agent procure it for our needs.

Once it has been polished and mounted in the proper location, our space station will be the ULTIMATE POWER IN THE GALAXY!!!

Um, Reauland. There is only one ultimate power in the galaxy.

Death STAR Reau.

Not Death STAIR.

for reasons such as this (someone paying 10k for a stair) apple idiots(they are not fanboys anymore) will never be taken seriously by anyone.
