Sitting here wondering, before work...
What determines a noob, a newbie, one who "pwnzorz" (don't ask me what that means), and a veteran player? There is a fine line, I believe.
I find something funny over playing since Jan, and how people act to one another in parties:
I get a tell from the leader "Sorry i think i built a noob pt"
me-"Well, there's only one way to help them out, and that's to teach them and work with them, not call them stupid idiots 'cause they haven't played the game long"
him-"they don't even have a map of qufim rofl"
me-"Didn't you have any questions when first starting to paly this? Did anyone help you? Who peed in your cereal?"
him-"lets jus go exp"
*rolls eyes*

Seems as if those refusing to help newbies are themselves "noobish", and are missing out to get to know some good friends in the future :) I mean, it's one thing if you're one hell of a player, but how are there going to be any other good players to party with if you never pass your knowledge around and share with those that are less enlightened? I encourage everyone to pick up that 20war/6blm into their party and work with them, be nice, be polite, just like some people were to you when you first joined. Nobody enjoys being yelled at and told they're an idiot; friendliness and patience will win you many friends in this game as in real life... I'm probably preaching to the choir here, as far as the fellow posters go, but remember, help some random newbies out and show them how enjoyable this game and its community can be! ^^b

Ill help anybody really it doesnt matter...

and I still dont have a map of qufim

Sometimes I just go to high train zones (ie entrance of delk tower, kazham entrance, dunes) and kill all the trains just to help people out for a bit.

There is also however a certain expectation of players and having the ability to grasp common sense and knowledge. Some have big mouths and cannot bear to lose their pride and have someone try to show them the easier or correct way to do things. Water off a ducks back and to the next I roll. :D

Stop stalking me Ryme.. I go to all those places to do the same thing (and maybe kill mr. Emperor in VD). I also observe what other lower level paladins are doing and give them tips if they initiate a conversation with me. I totally agree, we need to teach the youngins good habits before they develop bad ones. I think of it as a future investment towards peace of mind coz eventually you WILL pt with them (be it another job, etc.). /starts song "Greatest Love of All"

The difference between a newbie and a noob is that the former applies to the in-game knowledge a player has, while the latter is a description of a players real-world personality.

 I love it! ...

By helping newbies, you help yourself too. For example, last night our linkshell got together to level our subjobs (our mains are all over the map, but subs all happened to be close together, with our WHM leader wanting to raise up SMN now instead of the previous BLM sub). Our THF from the link had to cancel, so we found ourselves with 5 instead of 6: BLM 20, WHM 19, SMN 19, MNK 19, NIN 18. We decide to head to Sauromugue for beetles, and pick up a 6th in Jeuno.

It just so happens that there's a lvl 19 THF seeking in Qufim. We pick him up. He's a newbie, fresh out of Valkurm, who's never used a macro, or even skillchained for that matter. Between beetle pulls we show him how to macro his sneak attack and fast blade together for a skillchain, and incorporate him into a Distortion chain with the ninja. Let me tell you- when that first chain went off, with his sneaked fast blade, he saw the light, lol. It was so much fun, to see him tripping over the damage he did (151 with Fast Blade, plus another 92 for Distortion). By the end of the night he was chaining every time without fail, and we all got 2 levels.

If we had just said "whatever" and let him do his thing, without teaching him how to use his weapon skills to best effect, we never would have leveled at all last night. Admittedly, it took some patience- it was probably 2-3 tries before we fixed the typos in his macro, heh. But the end result was so worth it. As I said to my link at the end of the night- "I can rest easy tonight, knowing there's one more THF out there who knows he doesn't have to suck". ;)

I'm all about helping anyone in this game and realize that I still have a far way to go, especially with playing new classes that I've never touched before. Sometimes it's really hard too though...I've had people just lay into me because I told them to alternate Cure I and Cure II to keep the hate down in the dunes (I usually follow it up with "^^" just to kind of give the vibe I'm being nice about it and not calling somone a n00b). Or explaining to a puller that they need a macro to say what they're pulling before they spring some mystery monster on the party.

Or when I'm playing my summoner and people are like "How come your not leaving them out? Your not summoning!" and I try to explain that Shiva's only doing 2-4 pts of damage on the crab and it's a complete waste of MP to keep her out. My mp is better spent bringing her out once casting Blizzard II and then putting her away, following up with backup healing and buffs. After that I get the impression that I'm not going to get invites again.

Some people just don't want to learn. They think they've found a groove in the game that makes the the "ultimate play3r" and really don't need the help of another. I'd have to say the only class I've actually encountered in the last couple of months that really wants help is fellow summoners with avatar battles....Made tons of great friends that way.

But like I said, I'm all about helping out and even getting pointers in return but sometimes it's just not worth the flack your going to get back. The funny thing is I encounter the pride issue more in the 15+ range then the 14- range....

As I thought, Sabia, Jazper, anyone else who's posted... I'm preaching to the choir. Yeah, people can be stubborn and for some reason let their ego's get in the way of a computer game sprite (which is strange considering the reasonable way I approach and offer advice, usually in /tells as to not embarass them in front of the party unless they're completly out of control), but there's only one way to tell one of those people from the other; that's to try. :) I'm one stubborn guy, I tell ya, and I'm not going to give up thru one bad experience or the next. :D
Good work on trying to be helpful and live up to the mentorship you've probably attained...

By the way, someone pointed out that most people that leave their mentor tag up like seeking almost always act like spoiled brats or just plain up disagreeable jerks. lol I thought this was a humorous observation...

I also agree that we should help out those who haven't been playing long. Show them the ropes, if you will. I help out anyone who desires help, like getting the skulls for the subjob quest (i've done this numerous times^^).

I think they funniest thing about the Mentor Flag is when people leave it up in area's they know absolutely nothing about! I went the mentor route and love putting my flag up in areas that I feel i can actually help people out, but it's really no good to leave your flag up in areas where you - yourself are completely lost. Or when people have the mentor flag up, I send a /tell and they don't reply....I mean come on! I've had people ask me stuff in WH when I have my flag up that I don't know, so I send a /tell back saying "I'm not really sure but let me see if I can find out for you." Don't leave it on if your AFK or have no intention of replying....Just something I find a little funny ^^. Mentor flags are not badges saying "I've played a lot of this game." They're flags that say "Gee, I really enjoy helping people out, so send me a /tell if you're feeling a little lost!" :)

I agree Sabia

That's why I so rarely put up my mentor flag. I like helping other people; I'm one of those players who likes to play to interact with others, not just to be OMG UB3R 1337!!!11 Most times when I do have the flag up, it's times when I know I have plenty of time to answer questions and help out, such as when running to Selbina for another clay tablet, or fishing.

I've noticed that some people leave the flag up all the time, not because they want to help, but as a status symbol. And, I'll admit, the first week that Mentor was available I had it up a lot, lol. I think the farther you get from 30, the less likely you are to see that flag on others your level. After 50+, most mentors (it seems to me) are the ones who actually want to help; after all, they've got AF as a status symbol, they don't need a little "M" by their name, heh.

As anyone who knows me can tell you, helping people is one of my favorite things to do in FFXI. Sometimes people respond well and thank me, others don't respond at all, and yet others are rude and tell me to f*** off and stop acting like I'm better than them. The latter of those quickly goes on my LS's blacklist (we like to keep a collective blacklist in our LS ^_~). When the mentor system was first introduced, I wasn't level 30 yet, and I couldn't wait to get it. When I finally did, I noticed something: people don't ask me for help any more when I have my mentor sign up than when I don't. The funniest thing to me, though, was when I didn't have my mentor sign up, and someone who did asked me for help with something. XD But yeah, I typically only put my mentor sign up when I'm already helping someone with something, or I'm bored and don't mind stopping whatever I'm doing to pass the time to help someone.

I still remember my early days playing this game, starting off with my Whm................and lvling in Shakrami maze i got my first lesson on how to use Macros and the F-keys! Boy did I really improve on my spell casting after i had learned that! And I really thank Tiika for being kind enuf and patient enuf to help me out with that ^^ (i had accidently mis-targetted a spell which almost killed the pt!)

Its events like that which i think most people appreciate and which makes the game that much more enjoyable! There is just so much to learn in this game that makes me want to learn more and i enjoy sharing my own knowledge (what little i may have....) with others by helping them out! ^_~

Shoulda known when I posted with an opening rhetorical question, I'd get some answers like this. Thanks for your input for those not in the know, but basically I started this thread to try to inspire some positive responses and good feedback from the community. Thank you all of you who have posted with your stories :)

I know that this has been said a lot already in this thread but I figured I'd still post it anyway. When i first started playing this game I wasn't even on the Quetzalcoatl server. The forum I was curretnly on had some of my future LS members on it. Roofie which some of you may or may not know started talking to me in posts and on our "shout box". He convinced me to come to this server and join his LS. I did it and him and the rest of the LS (Roofie, Kat, Laur (he was a noobie like me then) ) helped me gain back the levels I had lost in the move and were just extremely helpfull when I'd ask questions and things of that nature. Things like that enhance the gaming experience for me.
