Hey everyone, Lyea here. I am a thief in training and a new player to the game. Any advice or suggestions would be a great help and if any of the awsome thieves would be willing to take on a student I am willing to learn. ^^:chocobo:

I love you for choosing the best job in the game.

- Seperate your Sneak Attack and Trick Attack macros. /wait is unreliable.

- Don't ever hesitate to use your 2 hour in a tight spot.

- When you're pulling, pull a bit faster than the party wants you to and then sort of calibrate it down if you need to.

- Get your gear early so you can level into it. Experiment a bit, listen to what people tell you but don't be confined by it.

- Make your own parties.

And be on your toes, really. Experience and making your own mistakes is king. After a while you'll learn to trust your intuition. Play with guts and try everything.

I will remeber that ^^, though I'm still getting my feet wet with earning gil. I am getting better at it though ^^. I have already gotten up to level 27 on thief thanks to the help of my linkshell cause they invite me to low level parties. But I am having fun too so I am glad I picked this job.

Suggest using sword for sneak attack until level 33 where you get viper bite (you're best THF ws stacked with sneak attack and trick attack for a loooong time. Andlol I pressed tab to try and get sneak attack on auto-trans on qcdn.. sad.

Probably best to use sushi at that level, cheap sushi is better then nothing. And if you don't have enough for that, even meat with dexterity is potentially helpful.

Also... this will help you a TON if you're starting out new: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Thief

Go to the bottom and check out all the guides, they're pretty helpful for a new player.. plus I'd suggest players who use thief even at higher levels to look at them, people tend to misuse THF. If you don't mind reading for a while and doing some research. Good Luck! One of the best jobs i've ever played, it gets especially fun at 33.

If you're pulling, you have great control over how much damage you get to do. Precharge your SATA's always and assure yourself that you will have it ready at the start of as many pulls as you can. If you precharge, you fit in 2 SATA's with or without WS in like 10 seconds.

Cool I have been reading that wiki site alot on thief and have learned alot, and thanks to my linkshell I will be able to get the nin scrolls easy, they went farming for yag necklaces with me.

What are some good affordable gear that I might be able to get? I have thief up to 30 but I am using stuff between level 10 and 21 with the exception of my dagger.

You'll actually find that gearing thf is quite afforable since many gear choices are good for quite a few level, I wore mostly Noct gear from 30 to thf af range. There are of course little improvements here and there you could do but for the most part your gear will last you quite a long time.

How much does the Noct gear normally range in price?

Around level 30, I'd recommend:
*Note, at 30, until you unlock viper bite, I recommend sword (centurion's sword). SA Fastblade is great.

Weapon 1: Thug's Jambiya (20k) or Merc. Captain's Kukri (11k)
Weapon 2: Merc. Captain's Kukri (CP item) or 11k
Ranged: Some form of marksmanship should be your choice. Fast and can use acid bolts to lower defense of mobs, always nice.
Head: Empress Hairpin (very easy to camp and high drop rate. Definatly something to work for. PM me if you'd like info on how to camp)
or Merc Captain's Headgear (9.5k)
Body: Merc. Captain's Doublet (10k - yes, I know it's ugly ;;)
Hands: Battle Gloves (18k). Easy to farm a key and pick the lock in King Ramp's Tomb. Almost always inside the chests here.
Legs: Noct Brais (9k) or Noct Brais +1 (13k). I'd opt for the HQ, only cause it does last you a while :)
Feet: Savage Gaiters. These are the mithra RSE and have a nice STR+3 on them. Fairly easy quest to get these. or Noct GaitersNQ/+1
Rings: Balance Rings x2 (18k)
Back: Nomad's Mantle (9k)
Earrings: Beetle Earrings NQ/+1
Waist: Merc. Captain's Belt

As a THF, you've absolutely picked the best race so there's a plus. You focus wants to be dex/agi for weaponskills. The above gear isn't too pricey and wouldn't take you too long to farm up, I don't think. A lot of it has a few cheaper alternatives and quests to obtain them / conquest points.

I will mention one thing though, as you get higher, and even now, there are ways to improve your THF a good bit. THF is macro intensive, you'll need to make plenty of them. Personally, these:

TP Set: Here I'm striving for accuracy/haste/attack.
WS Set: A balance of everything comes in to play here. At your level, you won't be able to get anything other than DEX/AGI really to boost it. Viper Bite is also stregnthed by attack, but I do not believe you can get too much attack+ at your stage. No need to focus on acc for weaponskills because SA/TA is going to make it hit anyway.
When you get Dancing Edge, our best multihit, your focus changes some. Your prime concern becomes accuracy/dex/str/attack/emnity.
Evasion Set: I focus on evasion while not suffering too much on my attack/haste/acc because I hate killing slow.
Sneak/Trick Attack Set: A quick macro I do to add DEX/AGI as I'm about to land a sneak or trick attack.

All these swap gear, and usually the macro looks something like:

/equip Body "Merc. Captain's Doublet" <me>

Gl, if you have any questions I'd be happy to answer! I hope you found this helpful.

How hard would it be to get a Thug's Jambiya made? I keep checking the auction house and none are for sell.

I wouldn't bother since the merc captain's kukuri is better and cheaper to get. I'm not sure how badly camped leaping lizzy is nowadays but i'd suggest going for the boots if you can. I got mine within 2 hours after I finished the rng quest.
I recommend this to any newbie as well. start farming up zeni once you make it to Aht Urgan. It wont come in handy until you're lv 72+ but you are going to have so much zeni bult up by the time you're level 70+ that if you have freind/lsmates willing to help you can pimp yourself out almost immediately while managing to gear up lsmates at the same time.
